The Silver Star by Jeannette Walls Book Summary

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Glass Castle and Hang the Moon, Jeannette Walls’s gripping novel "transports us with her powerful storytelling...contemplates the extraordinary bravery needed to confront real-life demons in a world where the hardest thing to do may be to not run away" (O, The Oprah Magazine).

It is 1970 in a small town in California. “Bean” Holladay is twelve and her sister, Liz, is fifteen when their artistic mother, Charlotte, takes off to find herself, leaving her girls enough money to last a month or two. When Bean returns from school one day and sees a police car outside the house, she and Liz decide to take the bus to Virginia, where their widowed Uncle Tinsley lives in the decaying mansion that’s been in Charlotte’s family for generations.

An impetuous optimist, Bean soon discovers who her father was, and hears stories about why their mother left Virginia in the first place. Money is tight, and the sisters start babysitting and doing office work for Jerry Maddox, foreman of the mill in town, who bullies his workers, his tenants, his children, and his wife. Liz is whip-smart—an inventor of word games, reader of Edgar Allan Poe, nonconformist. But when school starts in the fall, it’s Bean who easily adjusts, and Liz who becomes increasingly withdrawn. And then something happens to Liz in the car with Maddox.

Jeannette Walls has written a deeply moving novel about triumph over adversity and about people who find a way to love each other and the world, despite its flaws and injustices.

I couldn't put it down!. I read the book in 1 day! Every detail was just so alluring, I couldn't put it down! This is a must read!

Silver star. Very disappointing

Disappointed. I would agree with those who said it was not as good as her first two books. It was a little too predictable and slow.

Don't waste your time. I read this book in its entirety only because I paid for it. It reads like a novel written for pre-teens. The storyline is absurd and the dialogue is hokey. I have read the other works from this author and enjoyed them but this book missed the mark.

Fantastic. Beautifully yet so simply written. Tells such a great and powerful story even through the eyes of a 12 year old. You fall in love with Bean, sympathize with Liz, and feel a sense of empathy for them both in regards to their wacky and absurd mother. It's a quick read, I really recommend it

Fast read. Tough subject matter maybe told a little too tongue-in-cheek. Almost like a comedy-in-trying but falling short. I think a better ending would have been to not kill off the offender but to disable him and keep him alive and aware of his afflictions...as a constant reminder of what a waste of a human being he truly was. Maybe I'm being too serious but...see what I mean? Tough subject matter handled far too cavalierly.

Small pee pee energy. Too thin.

The Silver Star. Great read!

Loved this book!. I literally couldn't put this book down and read it in a day. I enjoyed the other two books as well but this book is really a page turner and such a great story.

The Silver Star. I have been waiting for this book based on the beauty of Glass Castle and Half Broke Horses. VERY disappointed in it . It has no depth, no nothing.

.. I've been waiting for this book. Sadly it does not compare to The Glass Castle or Half Broke Horses but it is a decent read.

Good Read.... I started this book a couple times - just didn't get hooked - till this time! Easy fast read - like watching a movie. Love that bright & brave little Bean. I know her Daddy would surely be proud of her! Loved it!

Eagerly Awaiting!. Just Pre-ordered this, so, I haven't read it just yet, but eagerly anticipating it's arrival! I was travelling when I read her first novel, Half Broke Horses, and was so riveted to it, that I got NOTHING else done for a day and a half. I was so "hungry" for more of her writing that I couldn't wait to get to an Internet access, so, I stopped at a restaurant on the way home, just for the i.a., lol. There, I downloaded her second novel, The Glass Castle, and began reading that. Another Winner!!! Have been waiting ever since for this book! Will try to add to this after I read it. :)

Dumb. The book started off as a good read but half way through it just went downhill- it read more like a teen/young adult book. The Glass Castle is a much better book

The Silver Star. I absolutely loved The Glass Castle and Half Broke Horses, so I was very disappointed in this latest book. It appears to be written for pre-teens. Issues are dealt with on a superficial level and the characters are thinly drawn. While I can't recommend The Silver Star, I will eagerly await Jeanette Walls next book. She is a gifted writer and has made a temporary blunder here, I hope.

Question. How can people review this book when they haven't even read it yet?

Love Jeanette!. I had the immense pleasure of hearing this wonderful author at a conference several years ago where she was discussing homelessness and mental illness. I was compelled to rush out of the conference and immediately buy her book, 'The Glass Castle'. What a great read! I have no doubt that this offering will be equally as well-written and intriguing as that book. I intend to pre-order this one. Do yourself a favor and put it on your reading list.

Love. I always love Jeanette's writing capabilities. She never disappoints. I wish this book would have been longer, I wanted to know so much more. It was a very good read.

Sparse Sample. Might have downloaded this book had Simon and Schuster/Scivener been a little more generous with the sample's pages and a little less into hyping their mailing list.

A wonderful read. You grow to love Bean and Liz and how brave they are.

Good but ending left me disappointed. I have read both The Glass Castle and Half Broke Horses and absolutely loved them! Disappointed with this book. Good read for the most part, but dragged in the end and became predictable. I seriously didn't believe the book had ended when it did. Felt like there could have been more.

outstanding. I'm a Huge fan of Jeannette Walls! I love her pervious works and find myself revisiting them every few months. I am so glad there is now a third book to add to the small collection.

The Silver Star. I loved the book. The author does a great job of introducing characters and inviting you to feel connected with them. Bean is so likable, and charming. I enjoyed every page. I feel a little sad at the end, because I think I'll miss these exceptional girls. Fresh, engaging and funny. Thanks Ms. Walls for another fantastic book!

Jeanette never ceases to amaze. For someone who appreciates good quick reads, this book is a must. Walls' writing style is simple and pure pleasure to read. The story is thrilling, unexpected, and well thought. Loved it!

Short Fine Read. I don't usually have the need to write a review but, having read this and The Glass Castle, I have to say this is a pristine, lovely, touching story that I was sorry wasn't longer but now think it was perfect in every way. It is a happy story.

Heartwarming, inspirational.... Loved the book. A great study in the elements of the human character and its evolution.A must read!

The Silver Star. It was a good read I enjoyed it

Great read. Second book I have read from this author. Love the characters and story line. Starting her third book now.

Simple and fun summer read. Really enjoyed the characters and ease of reading. Read it in one weekend. Loved her other two books too.
