Chilling, heartbreaking, and terrified the hell out of me. Yet I couldnāt put it down. I read it twice; the first time I read through many of the crucial parts too quickly in anticipation of that was coming next that I wanted to go over it again to make sure I understood every detail, and the significance of each. Other reviewers have said it and I agree that this book will stay with you long after you read it, and that, I believe, is usually a great indicator of how good a story is told.
Beyond Ridiculous. One of the worst books Iāve ever read. Hard to know where to start really. 6 year olds constantly calling each other āmanā and ādudeā is just the tip of a colossal iceberg of horrendous writing
I will be forever scarred.......... A sad, scary, thrilling story of two young friends, and what a seemingly single innocent event at school, can rip apart two families, and how the suffering never ends. It has left me scarred, scared, sad, and some what hopeless. Makes you ponder a bit when you put your info out there...... Pen Pal is one of the best books Iāve read in a long time, and you canāt help but ride that roller coaster of emotions throughout the book. Well done!!
Great book. If you enjoy good writer creepy stories this book is the one for you ! I loved it and read it in two sittings šš»āāļø
I ACTUALLY can not stop thinking about this book. I love horror books, but this tops them all. I read this book 2 months ago (finished it in one day!) and I can NOT stop thinking about this story. Iāve been manically diving into Reddit thread on theories for the ending. Like I canāt stop, it was worth every moment reading this book!!!
Jaw on the floor. That book nightmare fuel and I loved it. I mean it was terrible, but in a good way. Anyone looking to be thoroughly creeped out should read this
So Good!!!!!!. The attachment at the end gave me chills !!!!!!
Amazing but a bit choppy. Some parts of the story were a bit too hard to piece together because it was a series of broken up memories. You basically have to build the timeline of the book on your own but overall AWESOME
Awful. Nothing about this was scary. One of the worst books I've ever read.
Good Read. I felt like more could have been added to the story, but a good quick read none the less, a little slow but it picks up towards the end.
Love love love!!. Suspenseful, terrifying and down right chilling! This is a great quick read. Couldnāt put this one down and read it in 3 sittings!!
Surprise ending. I liked the story, even though it was hard to follow at times because it jumped back and forth, but not sure how I feel about the ending. It was strange and twisted.
Amazing!. bought this book after reading it on reddit so i could experience it again. i recommend it to all my friends. the author is so talented! incredibly creepy story, and so well put together.
Scary as hell. I rarely get scared, but this book really creeped me out. Very disturbing. I love it!!
Creepy. Couldnāt put it down
Good book. It kept me on my toe and wanted me wanting to read more
Kept me up every night!!!. This book was my first from this writer and Iāll tell you honestly that I was a bit miffed with the timeline. It wet back and forward a lot in the beginning but I kept reading and it turned out to be a great read!! I highly recommend this book and now Iām onto the 2nd book by this author (not a series) Iāll let you know how that one is shortly. Happy Reading!!!
Wow. This book pleasantly surprised me. I saw this on the internet on Instagram and gave it a shot and I am so glad I did. Probably one of my favorite reads this year. This was what I would call a slow page turner. The author does a beautiful job integrating emotional undertones of friendship while also maintaining thriller elements. The story is told in flashbacks and is kind of like a puzzle you have to piece together. At the end you are still left with some questions and certain things are left to the readers imagination. Definitely worth a read.
Read in one sitting. Read all night. Very satisfying!
Brilliant. Lulls you to sleep with stories, then hits you upside the head with a bone chilling statement. Amazing how just a few well placed words can pack such a punch. Definitely worth the time and money to read. Just donāt read it alone in the dark, or at least not by a bunch of windows facing the woods.
Creepy. Very good read lays the creep factor early on and slowly cranks the dial up for a bone chilling ending. At times the sequence of events seem out of place but it doesnāt deter for the story. Overall it has the perfect scare components a child, balloon and, the woods.
Creepy as F*ck. I loved this book. It's one of the most unnerving stories I've ever read namely because the unfolding terror is mainly happening to a couple of kids. The way the author pieces together a collection of memories from the narrator's childhood / adolescence makes this book unlike any other and makes for a very authentic story. You should probably just stop reading reviews and buy it.
Best book ever. I really love this book.
One of my New Favorites. Amazingly creepy rollercoaster and an absolutely gut wrenching ending.
Haunting. I read this book for the first time three years ago, after coming across it on r/nosleep on Reddit. Every time I revisit this book I am left feeling bewildered and nauseous and I cannot put it down. Very well done. I highly recommend this book to everyone I know who loves a good read.
On my seat the whole time. I really enjoyed this book. There was a bond made with the characters in a such an emotional and heart wrenching way. I was constantly worried yet curious for the main character the whole time. I had many theories in my head the entire time and wasnāt disappointed with the outcome.
Chilling. This story was so unnerving.
3/5. It felt drawn out at times but it kept you reading. The ending was full of twists!
Great Horror/Suspense!. Listened to it originally as an audiobook on āThe NoSleep Podcastā around 2017 and was intrigued by the story and how cruel and unforgiving the book was (compliment). Decided to re-read it for my book club since it was short and we were trying to squeeze in two books in one month, decided to give it a chance as a read. Honestly such a great suspenseful book, something that I think all walks of life can relate to. I canāt give this book enough credit please read if you are thinking of even starting this book or you come across this review.
Not sure how I feel. So it started off good, the book was indeed suspenseful but personally, it wasnāt something that scared the pants off of me or anything. Certain parts of the book did have a decent buildup of fear, however it would dissipate rather quick leaving me feeling unsatisfied. The end was rather sad, but overall, the fear wasnāt really there for the book. All in all, it wasnāt a terrible book by any means but it also wasnāt the greatest in my opinion.
Ehhhhh. The story is alright but when things start getting suspenseful it becomes a dbz closing narrator line that is followed directly with filler episodes .
Creepppyyy. This novel captivated me from the very beginning. The creep-factor built continuosly throughtout the novel and ended with a bang. Only wish it was a little bit longer, more detailed, and had better character development, otherwise great quick super creepy read!
Creepy and terrifying. This was a surprising read for me but soo good!! Itās in my top 5 favorite books this year.
A missed opportunity.. I could have really loved this book if not for an ending that missed its climax and failed to resolve too many plot points.
Couldnāt put it down. Easy conversation like writingā¦I loved it! Surprisingly suspenseful and shocking when you least expect it.
Itās a great book so Far!!!. I just started reading it a few days ago and Iām tearing through this book due to the suspense!! I love this book so much!!! I hold it dearly to my heart and the characters are relatable IMO! I finished it and lemme just say, I am definitely gonna read this again!!!
The edge of my seat. I was on the edge of my seat every chapter. The beginning like a normal story but the end making my heart race. Both horrifying and interesting.
Never Read Better. Iāve read this book several times since my cousin recommended it to me. It never ceases to amaze. I can confidently say that this is my number one favorite book of all time. I find myself nearly speechless after each read. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking for something that will inflict strong emotion.
Superb!. Couldnāt put it down. Once the pieces start falling into place, the premise goes from odd, creepy, to terrifying. Just finished reading for the second time. Still gave me goosebumps & Aurenbach is a brilliant writer. Wish I could find more authors with such talent in scaring me without the mindless gore or sci fi elements. This book slowly & methodically puts pieces together in a story thatās so unnerving because one could picture the possibility of its potential reality. The ācat finding mission ā was the most terrifying part for me & still gave me chills. Aurenbachās vivid descriptions made me feel as if I was there. EXCELLENT READ!
Interesting. Interesting premise. Story was told backwards and I m not a big fan of that style. Told from a childās perspective but seemed unlikely a child would have those experiences at such a young age. Also, very predictable but a very short book so the story was wrapped up fairly quickly which was a good thing.
Poorly written, couldnāt read it.. Iām sorry but I couldnāt get passed the first couple of pages. Itās not very well written. Maybe Iāll give it a second chance but I seriously donāt get how it had so many 5 star reviews.
Confused. Boy talks of his friend Josh and the re-journey on his life in the younger years with his mother to find out the truth of what really happened to his friend Josh. I was very much confused. As the ending did not quite clear it up for me. But the book got me thinking of the reality of possibility of what had happened and I must admit, it is scary. Till nowā¦ I am still trying to figure out the pieces of what happened.
Kept me on the edge of my seat. Loved this!
Mwg. This book seems unorganized and not very compelling. I normally love creepypasta, but this story just seems to close with no purpose. Try āsuffer the childrenā instead, a much more satisfying read.
Creepy and cruel.. The book started pretty solid, creepy and mysterios. Some twists early on were satisfying. As I read on, it became more and more repetitive and lost that edge. 2/3rds through I started skimming just to see where the book was going next, since I had lost interest. Ultimately, the ending was unsatisfying.
Brilliantly mysterious!. Words cannot truly describe how systematically eerie this story begins to become as, the writer builds suspense by narrating his childhood memories in a way that subconsciously pulls you in and doesnāt let go.
Hours of my life Iāll never get back. Poor writing, climax that isnāt up to snuff, plot holes EVERYWHERE, repetitive, boring... I honestly donāt know how this has so many good ratings. Donāt waste your time.
If youāre a horror fiend like me LOOK. NO. FURTHER:. I have read hundreds of horror novels a novellas. Mr King, Mr. Straub, Ms. Jackson, Mr. Poe, Mr. Cutter, Mr. Tremblay, ok you get it; I love horror. It takes a great deal to scare me in a novel, like for something to stick with you while youāre reading it and put it down and LONG after youāre finished. Besides the authorās incredible story from Reddit to a published novel, I went in with low expectations - youāre not going to get some grammatical, literal masterpiece (in a way you are though). Itās not a paradox, ironic, an allegory, etc. However, itās more impressive than National Bestsellers tend to be, and the genius idea Dathan had to write this in the way that memories do come back to the human mind is brilliant. What scared me the most here is what wasnāt said, what is implied. You fill in the blanks as you go and especially after itās over. Yes, things happen along the way but if you need everything spelled out for you Iām sure Dan Brown has a new book! Thatās why this worked so well for me. It has moments of straight and pure terror, but never has a book crawled up my skin the way this one did. No offense Dathan, I did not like Bad Man at all. If you didnāt and havenāt read this, donāt judge an author by something that may be brilliant, I just didnāt think it was, and start from what made him famous. If youāre not bothered by this, Iāll send you the money it cost to buy it.
Creepy, but a page-turner!. This was one of the creepiest books I have ever read. It was a slow read at times, but meaningful in each chapter and I soon realized it was a giant puzzle. Is this story real?
Mr.. The book was very well written and I would rate it right up there with many of the very well known best selling authors I've read. I would highly recommend it.

Moving. This story was so amazing when I read it online , so as soon as I heard it was made into a book I had to get it. This story keeps coming back into my head for months and I still get sad about it. I recommend this book to everyone. Seriously. Just read it.
Fantastic. A absolute must read.
Love it. I'm not much of a reader but this kept me hooked every single page, absolute must.
:(. Apparently this is fiction - a small comfort in one of the most unsettling, devastating stories I have ever read. Seemingly innocent chapter titles are anything but. The last chapter particularly hits hard. Upon finishing this, I find myself feeling uncomfortable living in a house that faces a wooded area. I am also entirely put off having children for life. Happy reading.

Amazing. This book is really amazing. I first read it on Reddit and I loved it. When I found on iBooks I was so excited and I got it straight away.
Amazing, chilling and made me feel empty. I read this story years ago on Reddit. It has always stuck with me for the pure tragedy of the story and they way I feel so empty when I read the last chapter. The story chills me to the bone. I bought the book to ensure I always had a copy with me. Believe me itās such a tragic tale but a great read that leaves me wishing it ended differently so that I can hope for a happier ending.
Favourite book. I have read this so many times and i absolutely love it, would recommend to everyone who enjoys reading messed up things!

Loved it!. I read the original story on /r/nosleep on Reddit and was happy to learn there was a longer version published into a novel. I bought it without hesitation and I have not been disappointed! I really hope this gets made into a movie like it's been mentioned. I was engaged reading on Reddit and although I had just finished reading it there when I read it on my iPad the story had me captivated all over again. If I could give it more stars I would. Two thumbs wayyy up 1000vultures!
Well crafted and sickeningly good. An amazingly written story, my only peeve was I wish it never ended.
Read this book!. I enjoyed this book thoroughly! I read it in less than a week. Very creepy and disturbing at the end. Very thought provoking.
Great. Great book, roller coaster of horror. Awesome.
Reddit. Absolutely amazing. I read it on Reddit and I couldn't stop. Great work 1000Vultures!!
Iām devastated š„². I just finished this book and Iām still sort of at a loss for words. The writing was beautiful, as was the story telling. The author made it feel like I was seeing through his eyes. The sequence of events also made it feel like we were piecing together his memories with him. So devestating but a great read.
Will keep you up all night.. Confusing, scary, creepy, it sticks to you and won't let go. I wish I never read it!
