"An expansive, epic love story."—O, The Oprah Magazine

Ifemelu and Obinze are young and in love when they depart military-ruled Nigeria for the West. Beautiful, self-assured Ifemelu heads for America, where despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple with what it means to be Black for the first time. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post–9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London.

At once powerful and tender, Americanah is a remarkable novel that is "dazzling…funny and defiant, and simultaneously so wise." —San Francisco Chronicle

Multi-layered and powerful experience. Americanah starts strong and gets even better as it goes along. Beautifully written. Deep insights, depth we white folks cannot plunge unguide. The range of issues: race, racism, American black experience, non-American black experience, legal and illegal immigrant experience, ex-patriot experience after Americanization, women's experiences by each group, extraordinary-by-any-standard 'nouveau riches' in newly 'developing countries', in this case Nigeria, true poverty, relationships in each of the above categories, and so much more. It is a powerful experience.

Americanah. I almost could not put down 📖Americanah by Chimamanda. I spent many hours burning the midnight oil and even closed my door at work a few times at my lunch hour. It's a book about race and culture in America and abroad, intertwined in a love story-but certainly not a romance novel by any means. It's deeply textured, thought provoking and beautifully written. You won't be disappointed.

Breathtakingly Amazing. There aren't words to describe how this book has impacted me. I can relate to Ifemelu, the main character on a number of levels and I echo her perspective. This book should be read by people of all backgrounds as it will serve as an education on the human race. This is by far the best book I've read in years and I plan to gift it to friends and colleagues alike. Thank you for the gift you've given this world.

Interesting!. Great story and felt educated on the cultural differences.

I started this book 2 years ago.. A waste of my time then and now. The ONLY reason I fiished this is because I paid for it. It was a huge disappointment. Had I purchased the hardcover I would have thrown it in the trash.

Americanah. I loved experiencing both the U.S. and Nigeria through Adichie's eyes. She writes with beauty and humor, and although hers is a sort of two-way "immigrant" story, the issues the characters face are universal.

Nigerianah. She should write a book about the discrimination in her country. Black on black crime and the poverty brought about by black leaders that represent the most extremes in selfishness. Or she can write about the discrimination of white people and other nationalities by blacks in Africa. Or is only America suppose to solve all mankind’s problems world wide, problems that are so grounded in individualism you could never fix them; if you even consider individual rights a problem.

I need a sequel.... What an amazing read! I could not put this book down. As a NAB I could identify with every words. And every word drew me in. Demanded I reach more. Brilliantly written. Rich. Descriptive. Believable storyline. I'll be reading this again, for sure! It inspired me to write.

Good Read. Some chapters were pretty drawn out and the ending left something to be desired.

Must Read. Relatable and eye-opening. As a Jamaican immigrant that migrated to a completely new way of life in the United States 4 years ago, reading this novel brought great lows and highs for me. I went from melancholy, to ambivalence, to pure bliss, to resentment and feeling detested. It was a truly a BEAUTIFUL novel… Chimamanda is incredible. I now want to read everything she writes, her words were bold and captivating. When thrown to Obinze’s character, I would become restless and a little annoyed and impatient, mostly because I was so enamored with Ifemelu and the female’s perspective, nevertheless I look forward to what proceeds Americanah.

Loved it!. Adichie has brought alive Nigeria in a way for those of us in the West that have no understanding of this fascinating people who live and love and are connected to us by humanity. What a wonderful compelling read.

Amazing book. Oh My God! This is a must read. I have to meet Chimamanda. I truly am a fan of her after reading this book. MASTERPIECE!

A wonderful read. Couldn't put it down. A beautifully written perspective like none I've read before.

Imprisoned by brilliance...deflated by longing. I was simply entranced by the brilliance of this story. I fell in love. The endearing honesty and the openness of black culture from an African perspective was exhilarating. I always wondered the thoughts of Black Africans as Americans (for whatever length of time), and now I have some idea. As a AA woman I have long felt a sense of distance and resentment when encountering our parallels. I never quite grasped why. This story and the transparency, in spite of how maddening and difficult it was to internalize, helped my process of that. Item and Obinze's love was relatable on so many levels. However, I was left wanting more "drama" at the story's end. It felt to me a hard period at the end instead of a well-planned climax. Thank you for this work.

Inspired by how Fiction sounded so Real. What a page turner, that is my first impression of this novel. I loved it each single day, and I blame myself for being late to buy it for my summer reading. Well this is a novel which at my summer vacation 2013, I haven't hesitated to go with it on my iPad to the BBQ party or beach outings, and I even went with it to the bathroom when I had a long call. Chimamanda you are the best. Am starting writing my first novel : Anita's Diary hopefully one day it will be as good as ur novel. You really inspired me Lulu~ The Tanzanian Girl

One of my best reads. Am not the one to write reviews but this is undeniably one of the best novels I have spent my time reading. The book was suggested as a good book on a blog i was reading and thought I should give it a try. I wasn't wrong. The author is talented and even though am not from Nigeria I can relate to her story. Words are vividly expressed in a way that makes you feel as though you were there.

Awesome. This book reminds me of my husband and I...the struggles, the identities... On so many levels I saw myself, my family, my in-laws etc.. Love it

Excellent Book. I loved everything about this book. I am not from Nigeria but also migrated to the U.S. I can relate to so many things in this book. The struggle is real and it's good to know I am not alone. I sense there will be another book with how It all works out for Ifem and her one true love. I wish I could break into the language but since I can't I will just say "please let it be another book O. 😃

Instantly gripping. Hooked from the first page. I did more than just read this book, I experienced it. It was like meeting a new friend that you'd known all along.

Love it. Very good book, I'm Ivorian (half cast lol) who moved to Paris after high school to attend university and now I'm living in Maryland with my husband and daughter i found my self in this story. It is soooo true. Great great great keep writing please.

Do not miss out on this book. Wow, so beautifully written. At no point in this book did I want it to be over. The view on various cultures is intriguing yet guides you to think about your views in various ways. The perfection of all the story lines coming together deeply immerses you. The characters are complex and unique. I loved it.

Exceptional. This books is a gift to an AB in search of understanding her ownself, as it relates to race and the world. Thank you for your daring ability to tell a story not often vocalized.

Great read. Perfectly written book about the depth of Maintaining your true identity...

Can't wait for her next book. Addictive, Awe-inspiring. keep up the good work chimamanda!

I found my role model!. As a Nigerian Americanah, this book couldn’t have hit more close to home. It unearthed memories. The lives of it’s characters, especially it’s protagonist mirrors mine. I’m so inspired, but also intimidated some what as I’ve embaked on the journey of writing a book only to learn I have a long way to go. Ms, Adichie have become a role model for a person like me, I can’t wait to read her other books. Good work!

Best book ever!. One of the best books i've ever read!

My all-time favorite book. This novel brought me to tears on several occasions. Absolutely beautiful.

Loved it!. I can relate even though I did not come here without papers. Just the immigrant experienced and reading this. It was funny, sad, and extremely well written. I was blown away by a book that speaks about another voice and encourages me that there will be mroe books to represent all people and not just the majority. The danger of a single story said Chimamanda. I’m a huge fan and I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

READ. Read the book. Very well written.

Americanah. Loved every page. A little long, but an easy read.

Great book!. I don't have much to say as I've just finished and I'm upset that it ended. So well written, relatable and captivating. Job well done.

You can smell her words. All of your senses are needed to digest her words because they become feelings tied together by pages. Pages that never end. Even when there are no more pages to turn. Much like a river that flows and lives forever in the ocean.

Funny, thoughtful and revealing. Such a great read. Chimamanda shares the perspective a lot of us live through on a daily basis - the so called diaspora. The book was so funny, thoughtful and reflective of this non american black life. Highly recommended! Thoroughly enjoyed!

Americahna. I can not get the book to download. Has there been a problem with this bookread mor

Great!. Loved it!

She read my mind. This is the story that I have always wanted to read and it was finally written . It was just as beautiful as I always thought it would be. The expressions, the euphemism, the literary language is outstanding. I have never highlighted a novel- this book I wanted to remember, I want to remember the characters, I want to relieve their lives as if the trials and tribulations were real. This is a beautiful book.... I plan to read it again and again.

Perfection. Absolute perfection.

Interesting. Interesting perspective on race from a non American black. Painted an in depth look at life in Nigeria. Very long. Lost interest in some of the characters but overall a good read.

Don't waste time on reviews for this author. Get the book, read it,soak and digest each word and phrase that will be imbedded in your mind for years to come, and finally fall in love...with this read, all her other pieces, and with everything this glorious being is.

Americanah Review. Americanah is centered around a romance in one of the least romantic ways. It is the one consistency kept through out the book. Obinze and Ifemelu are somewhat star-crossed lovers. They barely interact, but when their narratives are placed next to each, they reveal transcendent ideas about society and the lives we live. Both are immigrants that eventually go back to their homeland. Throughout the course of their lives they obtain and lose several jobs, relationships, mental states, all of which are both relatable and reflective. This book is a broad social commentary and as expected, shows some of the dark sides of our world. The sides that most don’t like to say out loud. Although many of the ideas and events presented can be controversial, this book has helped me think about topics, especially race, in a new light. She also has uncovered many experiences that black people in America face, which is something that I could never experience for myself. Even the fact that it shares the black perspective in such a transparent and blunt way is something that many of us need. We need to stop tolerating others who are different and start trying to truly connect and relate to them to cure the plague of discrimination. When I first began reading the novel I wasn’t sure what to expect. But one thing was clear from the start: Ngozi Adichie can write. Ever page is extremely well written. Especially the blog posts that she scattered throughout the novel. These blog posts to me are what her writing unique. It provided for a diversified narrative. It gives the author the ability to tell a first hand narrative and then let that narrator speak directly to the audience to explicitly get points across. It creates a depth of discussion where Adichie can state compelling arguments plainly. At the same time, she can subtly review other over arching themes and ideas through literary devises such as mood, language, plot sequence, and setting. One of the weak points of the novel was the characters. There was little to no character development. It was as if the character were static with bursts of change. Also, most of the supporting character we very one-dimensional. It was as if they all were predictable symbols rather than people who have more than one face. The ending to the book also fell short. It was if the novel was a series of attacks on our current discriminatory culture portrayed as idle proposed notions, but the end felt like a new book. It was similar to a boxing fight when the victor is too exhausted to finished with a decisive blow. Despite all of that, the novel for me had more pros than cons. Besides the excellent rhetoric, the ideas present in the book were nothing short of compelling. The book tells the story of a new type of Africa. The one that has pride and dignity. The main characters were black immigrants that choose to make the better life for themselves. It wasn’t the story we always hear. It was a story most Americans can relate to. Immigration in their case is similar to going to a good college or moving to a town with opportunity. Once they are in the country, that’s when it really gets good. Viewing our world from an outsider may be the only way to see old trends from a new perspective. It washes away the justifications we have made for centuries and replacing them with a different and updated explanation. Americanah is something everyone should read because it brings us one step closer to understanding and open discussion of the perception of differences.

Beautiful novel. I heard the author in an interview on NPR and fell in love with her sincerity and transparency. Got the book immediately and have loved it! Her writing is wonderful and the story is just amazing.

This book will touch you in every way. Amazing read!. A comedic, emotional, loving, amazzzzing ride.

utter nonsense. just feel bored when going through these chapters, very bored

A MUST read!. I did not know what to expect, beyond the referral that a coworker made to me to read this novel. I soaked up every page, nuance, and reflection of my experiences as an African American woman. Brilliantly straightforward writing, excellent storyline, and self reflective of the experience of so many in my generation. Thank you, Ms. Adichie!

Great novel, cliche ending. At times, I felt that their was an immaturity in the writing but, some were burgeoning moments of greatness. Example of a great modern novel and showcases the early development of adichie

Great read!. This was our book club book this month and I am so glad. What an interesting story with so much culture, detail and passion.

Amazing. This is the best book I've read in a while. The characters are so believable and relatable. The author provides great insight into the color blind racism that prevails in our country. She paints a beautiful picture of the human bonds that carry us through life. I loved everything about this book!

Americanah. What I loved about the book is that it was such a fluid read--the kind of story that for me is a real "page turner," yet I also learned a lot from reading it. It was educational for me, which I really appreciated. When I picked it up I didn't expect that to be the case, but I loved that about the book.

I enjoyed this. I liked this book and recommend it to anyone interested in what it's like to be African and live in the US. As an African American I found his intriguing and revealing. The love story is romantic without being cliched, I found myself wanting Ifemelu and Obinze to work out and find a way to be together

Great read. This book takes the reader on a ride around the world, to distant places and times while endearing the reader to the characters and jolting him or her with the uncomfortable subjects of race, politics and culture. The conversations on race offer not just differing perspectives on the subject but exposes the deep unearthed complexities society has been unwilling to confront. Maybe we are all cowards!
