The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by F. Scott Fitzgerald Book Summary

Yes, we know there’s been a rather recent movie by David Fincher starring Brad Pitt and the wonderful Cate Blanchett with this very title. But it is perhaps a good idea to plunge ourselves into the depths of the “written version”, actually the “written original”. Brad and Cate are great but, as with all movies, they are not just stories but also interpretations of stories. The original always helps us get in the shoes of a director ourselves and cast our own characters in our private movies inside our heads.
The short story belongs to F. Scott Fitzgerald, otherwise known as the author of the Great Gatsby (movies seem to love Mr. Fitzgerald. This story, however, is part of Tales of the Jazz Age, a collection of short stories from the great ’20s. Benjamin Button is a strange case of backwards-aging person: he is born with the appearance of a 70-year old man and starts getting younger. You can imagine some of the complications of such a life, but can you measure with Fitzgerald when it comes to imagination? Put your imagination power to test and read his story.

It's no Breakfast At Tiffany's. It shows you at the end how everything you cared about in life, what you thought important, does not matter at all. 'Cause no matter which way you go, we die, and that we all go through and feel the same things when we live.

Such a wonderful story and beautifully written. I know most have seen the movie but reading the story paints a much deeper insight. You don’t just watch from the outside, you feel the journey yourself.

Bored? Read this!. Very nice and sweet short story! There are parts that were kind of sad but overall this book is very short and would be a great read while trying to kill some time.

excellent. although i started the book way after I watched the movie, it totally surprised me. the book was not at all alike, it is totally concentrated on him telling his story rather than creating a romance out of it. I thoroughly enjoyed the difference in perspective and read the book to end in enjoyment

Boring. Weird book

Quite odd. This is to tolerably well written and very odd.

The curious case of Benjamin Button. Not at all like the movie but a good short story

Benjamin button. Definitely a classic, a quick easy read well worth the effort. Scots Fitzgerald’s book is a lil more melancholy than the movie brad pit star’ed In but it’s wonderful in all its simplicity

Rewind. It was a very weird book I liked it though it went to a lot of detail which was cool I would read this book again just for the fun of it

Wow. What an excellent little book. The descriptive writing evokes pictures and pulls on the heartstrings. I enjoyed the book more than the movie, Brad Pitt notwithstanding. Bravo, Mr. Fitzgerald.

Swag. Yo dis book 2 gucci

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. It has a funny type of humor

Curious is the word. F. Scott Fitzgerald being known for his dark outlook on life delivers a fantastic story to practical minds. Fitzgerald writes the book as if he lived it. There is no hint at this tale being merely conceptual. It may as we'll be a true story of a man who only grew younger. It is a truly genius piece of authentic art. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button carries no constant mood outside of making the reader curious. It's funny, as soon as you start the book, you know for sure how it will end, but you keep reading. Why is that? Everything in this story is intriguing from the title to the number of pages. The title gives away that this is not your ordinary short story. The story itself starts on day 1 of a the life of Benjamin Button, but, as you know, the story actually works it's way back down to day 1. The reader will find feat interest in watching the decrease of character in Benjamin Button along with the fluctuation of character of those who surround poor Benjamin. The book spans years and events so fast, you may think to your self that you are watching life on fast forward, whereas you are watching life as it is. Like the Curious Case of Benjamin Button, life goes by in a blink of an eye. What do we do? We live life as Button did. We just live. And what is more intriguing than living life? Overall, this book goes highly recommended by everyone I know who has read it and it goes highly recommended by myself to everyone.

Funnier than the movie!. I loved that unlike the book his father did not abandon him. There were hilarious moments due to his size at birth and his advanced aging! Unfortunately, unlike the movie, there was no enchantment of a continuous romance to enliven the entire book. Overall though, very good reading.

Fabulous. It has been a reading that keep you sitting with the ipad on your laps, while you devour page after page trying to finish as soon as possible to know the end of the story. It's a really amazing and fascinating short story. I recommend whoever to wanna read something good.

One of the best short stories ever written. I liked it better; it spoke to me on a deeper level than when I first read it 40 years ago. I seemed to relate it to the heartbreaking scourge of Alzheimer's. I saw the movie not too long ago and that was a wonderfully "in depth" portrayal of the story!

Gatsby reviews bro!!. The book was undeniably good. Such a unique tale told by none other than Fitzgerald himself. Litttttt!!!!!!!!!

FUN. Very fun read. It's very interesting with an excellent plot. I would recommend this book to anyone. This book is one of the few instances were reading is enjoyable.

Short story! Doesn’t take long to read ….. Interesting book, shows Benjamin changing over his lifetime! Struggles with his family over that time! Definitely worth the read!

Great short story. An interesting twist on the life we live and the perceptions we have of it.

*Sigh*. “I read it in one sitting. And I cried.. The movie is awesome for me, but this book would have been nice too if it were to be a movie.”

Spare hour? Why not. 📖

Quick read. Loved the movie so thought I’d give it a try. Very loosely based on the film but wonderful all the same. Would read again 🙂

Classic? No.. What a wasted opportunity for a brilliant tale. A story based upon a life, no matter what order it's lived in, shouldn't be skipped over at such a pace. Any attempts to re-write this properly would just be seen as plagiarism, pity.

The curious case of Benjamin button. Brilliantly told story of a life reversed, born old and dying eventually as a baby. The shame, prejudice and taunts Benjamin endures challenges the reader's perception of what it means to be different.

A curious but worth reading story. This story is worth reading as it gives an idea on how it was for Benjamin to live his life in reverse. However, I have to say that the harsh, uncharitable treatment he got from family members and outsiders due to his abnormality is pitiful. I pity him especially when his son said that he- Benjamin- should stop the reverse aging process and age the other way back. It’s like his son couldn’t fathom that Benjamin COULD NOT help it at all. Besides, having read this story over and over again, I got more curious about the following: 1. How could Benjamin have been able to fit in his mother’s womb and be born LITERALLY an old man with the size of a septuagenarian? 2. How could he be able to speak as early as the day he was born? 3. Why did his son Roscoe think that he- Benjamin- could do something about the reverse aging process? Why did Roscoe choose not to change his resentful attitude towards his father’s abnormal life structure? 4. How exactly can we define Benjamin at the end of the story? What did he look like and what happened to him at the very end of his life?

Brilliant. Short and sharp

Poor Benjamin Button. Loved this short story. Beautifully written. Nothing like the movie, and in fact makes a lot more sense that the movie.

Short and sweet. Shorter than expected but such a beautiful read. Thought provoking and very different. Looking forward to watching the movie at some point now.

Better than the movie.. Wow. Better than the move to really make you think about where you own life is going. The seasons of our lives get behind us no matter which way we are going. Make use of the seconds

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Loved this weird little story. The writing talent of this tale is so well done you can't put the book down.

The curious case of Benjamin Button. This was a fun read...a great short story.

Very amusing short tale. A very amusing short tale. Not a lot to this story but I enjoyed reading it.

Captivating. Engrossing. It is interesting to see how he didn't really fit in at any point of his life except the middle. When were young we always dream of being older and when were older well.

Awesome book!. I admit that I never heard of this book til the movie came out. Never saw it, but found this. Thought to check it out. I'm sure glad I did! Real different kind of story.

Excellent. This short story is very good!

Benjamin Button. Better than the movie, a good read. Perhaps a great understanding of aging and the loss of autonomy through dementia...
