The Witness Wore Red by Rebecca Musser & M. Bridget Cook Book Summary

You've watched Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey, the top 5 true-crime docuseries on Netflix. Now discover the revealing memoir of one woman featured in the series who was forced into polygamous marriage and her brave struggle to protect others from the same fate.

Rebecca Musser grew up in fear, concealing her family's polygamous lifestyle from the "dangerous" outside world. Covered head-to-toe in strict, modest clothing, she received a rigorous education at Alta Academy, the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints' school headed by Warren Jeffs. Always seeking to be an obedient Priesthood girl, in her teens she became the nineteenth wife of her people's prophet: 85-year-old Rulon Jeffs, Warren's father. Finally sickened by the abuse she suffered and saw around her, she pulled off a daring escape and sought to build a new life and family.

The church, however, had a way of pulling her back in-and by 2007, Rebecca had no choice but to take the witness stand against the new prophet of the FLDS in order to protect her little sisters and other young girls from being forced to marry at shockingly young ages. The following year, Rebecca and the rest of the world watched as a team of Texas Rangers raided the Yearning for Zion Ranch, a stronghold of the FLDS. Rebecca's subsequent testimony would reveal the horrific secrets taking place behind closed doors of the temple, sending their leaders to prison for years, and Warren Jeffs for life.

The Witness Wore Red is a gripping account of one woman's struggle to escape the perverse embrace of religious fanaticism and sexual slavery, and a courageous story of hope and transformation.

Spellbound. I could not put this book down. I felt the pain of the author and sorrow for all the people who cannot escape the mind bending tactics of the FLDS leaders. This book is amazing.

Wow!. I couldn't put this down! It is sad but eye opening at the things that go on in our time. Will definitely make you cry, both in sadness and happiness. Highly recommended.

The witness wore red. Gripping reality of the corrupt people of our nation in current years. At 37 i never dreamed this actually still happens in the world but even here in the US. My thought was this is stuff that happened years ago but what an eye opener this book was to the sick reality of people across the world in 2013.

The witness wore red. Great read. Amazing to think this is occurring in our times.

Wow.. I could not put this book down. I got up a half hour to read before work and stayed up long after bedtime. Riveting and inspirational as well as informative!

The witness wore red. This book clarified the news which was part of the nightly news. I loved the truth of the raid and the love Becky continues to show her FLDS family. Congratulations to Rebecca with her new life and her continued work for others. This is a great book of the story of a great women.

Good book, got off track towards the end. I recently have been interested in learning more about the FLDS Church and went to this book to answer some of my questions. The author, in my opinion, is a true modern day heroine. The beginning of the book gives an account of the church in her words. I loved the beginning. Towards the end it began to feel like a diary. I would have liked it to turn less personal/more evidence at the end, but I guess that is the style of this book.

The Witness Wore Red. Compelling! I saw Rebecca Musser on Dateline, and was very impressed with her straightforward manner of telling this story. I bought the book that same night and was unable to put it down. My heart goes out to Rebecca and all of the women and children who suffered through this, and continue to suffer today.

The Witness Wore Red. After reading this book, I can only thank my God for protecting me from being a part of such a degenerate group of men. To be owned by another person in such a manner is the worst life a woman could have. Though some of the men were brainwashed, as well as the women , they all had the option of reading the Bible and asking guidance of almighty God..but then they would have had to listen to His reply. I may sound as though I am judging the victims here which are the young girls.. I don't mean to. My question: where was the protection from this evil...their fathers and mothers. Did they have no sense of morals ..sorry, just because someone tells a person to give away their little girl to an old man in marriage is no excuse. My conclusion is that this cult is made up of weak minded and soulless people. May God have mercy on all their souls. My conclusion: this cult is strictly lust oriented and should be disbanded completely..which is to be my prayer ...

Wonderful story of compassion and love. This story is very moving and very real. It is written with love and compassion and remembers that most of all these are people that were raised in this religion and had no idea that they could choose a different path. Rebecca is somehow finds forgiveness in her heart and is able to reach out and help these women and children all she can and accept their decision to stay or go. Being raised in a religion that was very controlling as well I found I could relate to this story and found it even more amazing that she could find the courage to reach out to her people. It highlights the pitfalls of blindly following religion (or anything) can cause.

The Witness Wore Red. boysmumas Excellent read.

Excellent. Very interesting inside look into the FLDS, their beliefs and lifestyle. Easy to read, and well written.

Soul shattering & moving. This book, this woman’s journey and story moved me beyond any words I can honestly put together to form a sentence. I laughed at some things I cheered this woman on in her realization and the changing in her soul that’s things weren’t right, I cried. I cried so much. I felt like after reading the overview of this book it was meant to read this and hear her story and the struggle of so many lost within this organization under the evil and INSANE and disgusting Warren Jeffs.

WOW!. An honest and eye opening account into the lives of women in the FLDS society. Shocking details, made me cry- a compelling story.

Inspiring and Important. You won't be able to put this riveting book down. Every person with a heart will be moved by Rebecca Musser and her compelling story of survival. Aside from getting a sobering perspective on the ways Warren Jeffs invoked/invokes God and the fear of damnation to exploit and control the FLDS community, you will cheer for, celebrate, and be inspired by Ms. Musser's unbreakable spirit, unwavering compassion, and the courage of her convictions that enabled her to help thousands of people at great personal cost. In a time when we basically deify athletes and entertainers, it is people like Rebecca Musser who are the true heroes.

Amazing. Completely inspiring, I could not put this book down! You are an incredible person and you have so much strength! I wish you nothing but the best in life.

Couldn't put it down!. This has been a journey. Rebecca takes you along on the events of her life. She is simple and honest in what she says. I felt involved in the story and I couldn't put it down. The story can break your heart but you also rejoice with triumph. Very thought provoking and respectful of her people.

The Witness Wore Red. I must admit to joining the mindset that thought the women who lived in this polygamist sect had a choice...and how ignorant I was. If this is a lifestyle you simply cannot wrap your mind around, or you are just curious, this is a must read. I had no idea. Could not put it down!

The witness wore red. I found it compelling, and sad for all who are still misled and abused in the name of God. God is not anything like what is depicted here. This is Satanic . I appreciated her comment to her mother regarding " truth". How strong she is and admirable. Thank you !
