New Earth by Ben Bova Book Summary
Award-winning author Ben Bova brings us New Earth, his latest tale of science fiction in his Grand Tour series.
The entire world is thrilled by the discovery of a new Earthlike planet. Advance imaging shows that the planet has oceans of liquid water and a breathable oxygen-rich atmosphere. Eager to gain more information, a human exploration team is soon dispatched to explore the planet, now nicknamed New Earth.
All of the explorers understand that they are essentially on a one-way mission. The trip takes eighty years each way, so even if they are able to get back to Earth, nearly 200 years will have elapsed. They will have aged only a dozen years thanks to cryonic suspension, but their friends and family will be gone and the very society that they once knew will have changed beyond recognition. The explorers are going into exile, and they know it. They are on this mission not because they were the best available, but because they were expendable.
Upon landing on the planet they discover something unexpected: New Earth is inhabited by a small group of intelligent creatures who look very much like human beings.
Who are these people? Are they native to this world, or invaders from elsewhere?
While they may seem inordinately friendly to the human explorers, what are their real motivations? What do they want?
Moreover, the scientists begin to realize that this planet cannot possibly be natural. They face a startling and nearly unthinkable question: Could New Earth be an artifact?

Meh. Honestly, I expected much better and had to force myself to finish it. The narrative was fine. The characters mostly one dimensional. The dialogue was repetitious. I think this could have been an excellent short story or even several chapters of a longer storyline. It really feels like this was an outline of a book rushed into print and stuffed with words. Not worth the price or the time.
Great story. This book had me on the opening pages
Another excellent book!!. This book is yet again an example of the brilliance of Ben Bova. New Earth connects other books together and makes you want more and more!
Excellent!. Loved every page. Great story and characters. Looking forward to more great stories!!!
Great Read! Couldn't put it down.. First time reader of this author and was pleasantly surprised with the artful way the story was written. Left me wanting more on the accomplishments of the new saviors of humanity and our galaxy. The adventure's just begun!
New earth. Terrible book plodding uninteresting repeats itself. Characters are almost non existing in building interest. Very disappointing
not up to ben Bova's usual standard. After the first couple of chapters i stopped reading for a week. The characters did not ring true, instead of analytical, cautious and sceptical scientists the book was populated with impulsive, naive and credulous people that never would have been entrusted with a starship. So credulous, they could not twig to the obvious about 'new earth'. I took it as a bad sign but then it got worse as it descended into pretty shallow preachiness. That the book is a follow on from the much superior 'Farside' and I feel robbed that the sequel is such a lousy payoff.
New Earth by Ben Bova. One of the worst Sci Fi books I’ve read in awhile. Terrible character development and silly dialogue. Made it about 40 pages and gave up.

Bova at his finest!. Engaging, thought provoking and fun! Everything good books of any genre should be!
New Earth. This book is not worth the price. I bought my iPad ten days ago and this is the second ebook I have ever read. Within the first fifty pages, I realized that this is a clunker of a science fiction novel. The science was not credible, the plot was predictable and the characters were shallow. It is not a book one should purchase; rather one should borrow it from the public library.
