How to Photograph the Northern Lights by Patrick J. Endres Book Summary

How to Photograph the Northern Lights (second edition)
Text and photography by Patrick J. Endres
with aurora science notes by Neal Brown

If photographing the northern lights (aurora borealis) is on your bucket list, then this book is a must for you. Wonderfully illustrated, this 280-page eBook is a comprehensive and thorough guide that will equip you with the information necessary to capture your own photos of the northern lights.

Two long-time Alaskans and specialists in their fields have teamed up to create this resource. Professional photographer Patrick J. Endres, one of Alaska's most prominently published nature photographers, has mined the secrets of his two-decade career of aurora photography and outlined them in great detail, providing you with critical information to ensure your aurora photo quest is successful. Scientist and aurora specialist Neal Brown supplies the answers in layman’s language to often-asked questions about the aurora in his science notes sprinkled throughout the book.

The chapters contain a blend of technical and creative information that both the beginner and professional photographer will find invaluable. Topics discussed include where to go, when to go, what time is best, working in the cold, what camera and lens to use, aurora forecasts, composition, how to expose, moon and moonlight, and much more. The text is augmented with more than 150 of Patrick's luminous aurora photos, thoughtful quotes, and many illustrations, graphs, and figures to instruct you in the do's and don'ts of nighttime aurora borealis photography.

Patrick says: “Over the years I've seen countless errors made when photographing the aurora. This book equips both the beginning and professional photographer with all the necessary insider information to skip those costly mistakes—and offers the inspiration for the armchair photographer to get out there and explore the night skies on their own—you can do it.”

LOVE THIS BOOK!. I have been looking forward to this book for a while and it came out just in time for my trip to Alaska next week. I downloaded it immediately when I learned it was available and then read the entire book in one night. Patrick covers all you need to know from what clothes to wear (he doesn't just say "warm"), what camera gear to bring, what lenses you need, how to figure out exposure (which is very different from what we photographers do for normal night shoots), how to protect your equipment, when to go, and much more. The book is full of gorgeous shots (If I get ONE really good one I'll be happy) What's great about having this book on my iPad is that I am able to highlight things I need to remember and make notes whenever necessary. Patrick also has an on-line blog and I have found him to be very generous and prompt in answering any questions you might post.

Fantastic and ESSENTIAL. Okay. This is a great book that covers everything, including what to wear, which is critical if you want to be comforable in the Arctic! It is so worth it just for the checklist in the back of the book as well. So many little details that you could forget, and ruin a night of photography and waste a very expensive vacation! Little things like removing your filter, and setting metering mode to matrix, and so on. We just got back from Alaska and this book was the key to us getting fabulous shots of the aurora. I'm so glad the book was published just before we left for our trip. Having read and re-read Patrick's website articles for six months prior to the trip, we were able to plan everything, including when to go- the best week, and what size boots! Also shot some star trails per the book. We bought a copy for my wife's ipad, which we read again on the long flight, and we bought a copy for my laptop, which i had handy as well. I'm so happy that Patrick emphasized foreground in the photos, so we made the most of it. I saw others taking pictures up on the hill - just the aurora, and I knew they might have nice photos, but not as interesting. Thay had not bought Patrick's book, obviously. I highly recommend this for the adventurer in night photography, and for anyone chasing auroras!

A MUST HAVE!. A wealth of info for learning how to photograph the Aurora correctly. Highly recommended!

Great Book!. I just returned from Fairbanks, Alaska, my first trip to photograph the northern lights. I have been following Patrick Endres' blog and emails for several months now and was excited to learn a couple of days before my trip that he had published the How to Photograph the Northern Lights eBook. I immediately purchased the book and read it on my airplane flight to Fairbanks. The chapters, “ Dealing With the Cold,” “Aurora Exposure,” “Choosing Cameras and Photo Gear,” and “In the Field” were great, but I found “Preparing Your Camera Gear” to be invaluable and reviewed it nightly as I prepared my camera for the capturing the lights that night. I was able to get some good pictures as a result of using the book.

Finding Infinity. This book is for any die hard photographer or amateur alike. I have spent the last year studying how to use my 5D Mark II to shoot the aurora. I became very frustrated with the process. I shot on bulb setting, manual, and everything else I could try. I was never satisfied with the clarity or the results. In the last week of Feb I purchased Patrick Endres book. And read it while I was in Churchill Manitoba attending a "Winter Skies workshop put on by the CNSC there. I used the AP setting that Patrick recommended and I was blown away. My pictures were clear, bright and popping off my LCD screen. I was HAPPY! Patrick's book is very informative on all aspects from shooting the aurora, what to wear, what instruments are best to use and beyond and above his love of being a light chaser shines through every page. His practical method makes the read an easy one. The book is 200 pages and it is the best $20.00 dollars I have ever spent for photography "how to." As a more seasoned photographer when I first read Patrick's suggestion of using AP for good results I thought what?? He's got to be kidding. When I used the settings he recommended for the shots that were under 30 seconds-- I got northern lights gold! The week I was in Churchill was a lucky one. Each night there was a spectacular show of lights. I can only thank Patrick and his ebook for preparing me to take advantage of this event. I could shoot and shoot and get the shots I have always dreamed about. Thanks you Patrick you rock! Terra Martin Hypnotherapist

Tons of great tips and pointers. I have just returned from a 1 week trip to Iceland where I was fortunate enough to have 2 nights where the lights were active and the skies were clear. Having purchased and read this book before hand was invaluable to understanding all the elements to making successful photos. It gave me the confidence and ability to capture some spectacular shots and life time memories. At first I was hesitant to purchase it given the price but I can truely attest is worth every penny. It is very well written and does a fantastic job of preparing one for the event! Well done. For anyone on fence on whether to get this book, if you are about to try Northern lights photography or have not had much success with it in the past, I highly recommend Patrick's book.

Great Book!. I owned the 2nd edition of this book and now got updated to the 3rd edition, just love this ebook; it’s so beautiful to read and serves as a great reference for beginner photographers like me. Patrick is a very good teacher and answers all the questions about shooting northern lights in this book. This new version includes even more amazing images of this magical phenomena which helped a lot in perfecting my nothern light captures during recent Yukon trip.
