Its Pretty Unanimous. This was without a doubt the worst/most boring thing I have read in a long time, maybe ever. I see that I am not the only one with that opinion. I've read everything that NDM has published, reading this makes me not want to read anything else he publishes

Not sure what the Quest actually was.. After a long drawn out middle the ending was very anticlimactic. The arduous journey, by both the characters and the reader, came up short in the end.

Avoid this journey. Be aware that this is a re-write of an old book by the author, first published in 1975. And, based on what's written in the acknowledgement section of the rewritten and revised edition, the advice to the author was to add sex. Well, DeMille did add sex, and while it's very graphic (almost unnecessarily so), it's also cumbersome and boring. Very few thrillers, if they are good, need graphic sex. I'm not a prude by any stretch of the imagination, but DeMille delivers perfunctory sexual acts that are actually sort of old-fashioned and dull. The story is standard Holy Grail stuff. There is a lot of filler and many chapters contain material that's repeated from other chapters. The three main characters are flat, sometimes silly, but the silliness comes from the fact that the author has them repeating things. One thing that I found annoying was that even though Frank, Henry, and Vivian are a team, they are perpetually at odds with each other as well as with their own ideas of the journey they must take. Characters can certainly have conflicts with other characters, but the entire book is filled with this. Most ludicrous is the "darkest Africa" tone of the novel. Savagery abounds. The natives are not only restless, but they are cannibals and perverts. "The Quest" is much too long for what it delivers. The novel fails its own premise. The hunt for the grail seems beside the point. DeMille prefers squabbling lovers with their multiple partners. His endings -- yes endings, plural -- are let-downs. The ending at the monastery is absurd and abrupt. The actual ending of the book is not believable. These are adult characters that need to grow up. DeMille's rewrite lacks freshness. A 1975 book stays rooted in 1975. And that's in spite of vast changes in Africa and in thriller writing. If you take this journey, be prepared for a lumbering, meandering, and unsatisfying jungle walk. Also be prepared for page after page of repetitive material. You may actually be saying to yourself: Let's get on with it DeMille, didn't I already read that? I know I did.

The Quest. Wow,major disappointment...boring and to drawn out. Obviously not the writer 40 years ago he was 2 years ago when I read his previous book...maybe to much money and to lazy to put a new book together for paying customers who pay good money for work on a good topic!

One of DeMille's Top Three. This is a wonderful book that quickly becomes impossible to put down. You quickly become attached to the characters and the remarkable story. At times I wondered if Dale Brown read this story years before beginning his works. Thank you for deciding to share this with us Mr. DeMille!

Great. One of the best books written by DeMille!

The Quest. Read my first DeMille book about 8 years ago while in a book club. Up Country, General's Daughter, Panther, and started The Gatehouse. Only The Gatehouse comes close to how really bad this book.Loved the background information but the plot was all over the place. And that ending.....Zzzzzzz Fortunately I came back to DeMille for the Panther. Now that is good stuff

Seriously bad. I had to force myself to finish the book. I love his work, but this was a very significant disappointment.

"The Quest". I too was very disappointed with the sluggishness of the book. I expected an "Indiana Jones" treasure hunt. The written preview had me excited! I have read all of your books at least 3 times each. Mr. D, I know you can deliver a great story with BIG action & deep, life-like characters that we all love. I vote to bring back John Corey & Bremmer!!

The Quest. What a sad, sad waste of my time and his energy. I have read 16 previous books by Mr. DeMille and have uniformly devoured, and delighted in, each. I never did read the short story upon which this book is based, so I have no means to compare the two. The book, however, wanders almost aimlessly and ends pointlessly. As the author points out in his Acknowledgement section, there is a bit of sex in the book but even that seemed like titillation for it's own sake. Here's hoping his next endeavor has more thought and creativity behind it.

DeMille at his Best!. I think that Nelson DeMille is one of the best authors of our time, and this book didn't disappoint. The search for the Holy Grail has been the topic of many books and movies, but Demille added so much more to the story. This is a novel that both entertains and enlightens. It's a love story woven together with the importance of having faith and believing that things happen for a reason. This is a terrific book!

The quest A waste of time. If I has known this was a reprint of a 40 year old book, I'd never had bought it. It is interesting to note the evolution of DeMille's writing style, but other than that it's not well written, the characters are not captivating, and it takes a long time to reach its climax and rushes through it. Save your time.

The Quest. I'm really disappointed...it appears to me that the main reason for the rewrite was to include unnecessary sex to make the book more marketable.

Shameless. Nelson DeMille, shame on you for making us, your loyal readers, pay for cr*p you threw away decades ago. Why do this? For the money? If your reputation, built over decades, is of so little consequence, then I guess you are to be pitied. Enjoy the yacht or the sports car or the sixth home or whatever it is you so desperately needed to buy to drag this out of the trash.

Very Disappointing. Have read many of his books and quite enjoyed them. The Quest was unnecessarily long and tedious. DeVille takes over 900 pages to discuss "the quest" ad nauseum. Spoiler Alert: when they finally arrive at their location, nothing happens. I didn't read the original version of this book, but do wonder if this later version is supposed to be an improvement?

republished novel..... Have been reading his novels for years so I reflexively downloaded his 'latest' without any research. It turns out that this is a re-do of an old novel. Tried to slog through tedious beginning waiting to care about characters but lost credibility and my interest when King Arthur made an appearance. (Thank you Monty Python) With so much current event material available for him to continue with his modern characters and themes, this novel is a curious deviation. save your time and money.

Interesting. Better than his last 2 books which bored me. Some good historical facts.

Horrible. DeMille is one of my favorite authors. I could not finish this book. Don't waste your money. I will think twice before I buy another of his books. The reason called the quest is because it would be a huge quest just to finish this garbage.

The Quest. Let me declare that I have read many wonderful Nelson DeMille books. Many. However, the two latest, most particularly The Quest, have convinced me he's totally lost his touch. Don't disturb you positive view of him but look only to his works of the 70s and 80's

Long, slow and boring. I'm a huge DeMille fan. I've read every book he's written and loved every one but this one. Didn't even seem like he wrote. Long and slow and boring. Anyway, thanks for all the others. Love your John Corey books the best.

The quest. This is a slog. I am a big demille fan but this is the worst

The Quest. Another excellent story by an author who seems to always get everything just right. Strong characters with which one can identify with and feel sympathy, anger and a host of other feelings. The storyline went from catching my interest at the beginning and wanting to know what else happened even though the last page has been turned. Highly recommend this book.

Great Read. Again Nelson DeMille engulfs you in a story and leaves you wishing for more. He is a master storyteller!

Really really badly written. Looks like Demille's stupidest son wrote this book and used his father's name - well this is the kindest excuse for this badly written book. Otherwise, Demille should never be allowed to publish any book again. An insult to readers. Big disappointment. Didnt even finish it.

Quest is a disappointment. I'm a big DeMille fan, Lion's Game, Plum Island, The Charm School etc etc but he has written some stinkers too (Gate House), and I'd say this is one of them. Magic grail only believers can see? Chosen to find it? Pu-leeze! I will read reviews of future books carefully before buying another.

What a bore!. I can't believe Nelson wrote this yawner! What a major disappointment. The storyline has been done a hundred times before and there isn't one interesting character to cling to. Wish I could get a refund.

Long and boring. This is an example why authors should leave their earlier works alone. Slow and boring, not at all entertaining with poor development of the characters.
