The Troop by Nick Cutter Book Summary

WINNER OF THE JAMES HERBERT AWARD FOR HORROR WRITING

“The Troop scared the hell out of me, and I couldn’t put it down. This is old-school horror at its best.” —Stephen King

Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip—a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfire. But when an unexpected intruder stumbles upon their campsite—shockingly thin, disturbingly pale, and voraciously hungry—Tim and the boys are exposed to something far more frightening than any tale of terror. The human carrier of a bioengineered nightmare. A horror that spreads faster than fear. A harrowing struggle for survival with no escape from the elements, the infected…or one another.

Part Lord of the Flies, part 28 Days Later—and all-consuming—this tightly written, edge-of-your-seat thriller takes you deep into the heart of darkness, where fear feeds on sanity…and terror hungers for more.

8/10. Fantastic book, did not expect where this story went the entire time. Loved the authors attention to detail.

Decent book. Less a horror book that a gory thriller. Sometimes the kids' behavior seems unbelievable. Overall a solid read but more a library checkout than a buy

Great Fun!. I tend to read memoirs but felt like mixing it up a bit. The reviews looked promising so I chose The Troop and I’m certainly glad I did. Completely compelling right from the start and difficult to put down, I devoured this book with a hunger much like the afflicted herein. The author seems to relish painting gruesome pictures and creating an overwhelming sense of dread. The character development of these young men is truly a thing of grotesque beauty. I truly enjoyed this book. I must also comment on the reviews that highlight “animal cruelty”: SPOILER ALERT - Although the kitten and the turtle portions were certainly gruesome, I felt they were an excellent technique to distinguish key character traits. They felt necessary in character development and not at all gratuitous. The kitten truly brought that vile character to life and I found myself weeping with the boys at the idea of killing something to stay alive. This book would make a great movie and would require some strong actors to truly convey the emotion behind the madness. I highly recommend this book.

Best Horror Book I’ve Ever Read. I loved this book so much. The body horror is next level, the characters are so well developed, and the plot was truly terrifying + original. 10/10!!

Great Diet Book. With body horror and sensory descriptions that will raise palate-stinging bile to your throat, who needs to count carbs?

The troop. It started off slow, I had low expectations. But as I continued to read I felt like I couldn’t stop I had to know what happened. I was on edge the entire time. 10/10 would recommend

Meh. Well-written, not frightening at all.

Yuck. I grew up loving horror movies and novels. While the story and characters were very well done; I found the "gross out" factor, gratuitous. It was like watching a car wreck, you don't want to look, but you do. Not sure I'll buy another of Mr Cutter's novels. Some things are better left to the reader's imagination. Not sure I'll ever be able to garden again without a Tyvek suit!

Ewwwwwwwewwww EWWWWWW!. Loved it! Absolutely the grossest most terrifying book ever! You will not be able to eat spaghetti while reading this.

Little over the top.... But I love that in a book. Spent too many nights awake till 3 in the morning burning through this book.

Wow. (Some spoilers) I couldn’t put this book down, regardless all the torture & gore I could not stop reading. The only part I had to skip through was the part with the kitten; other than that every chapter was so descriptive. I look forward to reading the others.

Very disappointing. This book started off very strong with suspense and drama and then slowly evolved into a disgusting novel. The kids in this story, or true horrors, and the fact that they would all be associated is ridiculous. I hate animal cruelty and this book accentuated it. I wasn’t scared at all throughout this book, but definitely disgusted and disappointed.

Contagion Meets Lord of The Flies. A solid psychological thriller. Characters were solidly developed but some of the unanswered questions felt more like an oversight than a plot device.

Terrified. I didn’t eat for 3 days honestly, paranoid is too mild a term but Jesus it was something. I was fine until the gorilla experiment and it all just sunk in. Never going to read this book again for fear of...the book I guess. The best horror book I’ve ever read, couldn’t put it down even when I wanted to throw up or cry. I didn’t know this book was about ~Insert said creature~ or I wouldn’t have read it. Good job

disgustingly gruesome and holds you by the balls. this book is by far one of the most disgusting body horror novels i’ve ever read, ESPECIALLY past the second part. i applaud Cutter, because he had me needed to take breaks, and as someone with a stomach of steel for these kinds of things, that’s a rarity. bravo

Must read for horror lovers. I’m a big Stephen King fan and this book has the same pull you in vibe as his does. I was pulled in from the start of the book even with the feeling of some messed up and gory things were going to happen. I just had to keep reading while every bit of hope for the main characters slowly seeped away. Very well written and exciting story making me a new fan.

Loved it. It’s been a long time since a book made me feel the way this book did. But I loved it. It reminded me of vintage coked out Stephen King.

Can't put it down!. Extremely intoxicating. I was reading this at work when I realized I hadn't blinked because my eyes were dry and throbbing from staring at the screen so hard and my heart was pounding in my chest. I'm 3/4 of the way through and although it's probably taboo to write a review before finishing, but I felt it was necessary. If possible, this review will be edited to 5 stars upon the completion as long as the ending doesn't fall flat.

Terrifying. This is such a good book. Such a sad and terrifying but really good book. I’m new to Nick Cutter, but I am going to look for a second book to follow this up with.

Disturbing and Frightening. The imagery in this story is extremely disturbing and really paints a picture in the readers mind of just how awful the experience is on the island with the group of boys. A lot of metaphors and flashbacks that seem a little too long and out of place at times but nevertheless, it was a interesting and intriguing read. Not for the faint of heart or easily disturbed. The newspaper articles and interviews throughout the chapters bring a whole different layer to the story which is really captivating.

Animal torture. Be ready for it. Why do all of his books have this theme? Disgusting and totally unnecessary.

READ THIS AUTHOR!. Smart, terrifying, engaging. I never write reviews and took a wild chance on this author. I am a staunch Stephen King fan and find it hard to discover authors that match him. Well, I have now. I’m hooked and will be devouring each and every one of his books. His use of words in describing and creating sheer terror is almost unrivaled. No word is reused. He also has a way of eerily painting a sweetness and accuracy to his characters that is an unexpected balance to the evil. Grips you right from the beginning and doesn’t let go. Just like the worms. Highly recommend.

WAOOOOO. Cutter has written a mesmerising book. Highly recommended b

Gruesome story!. It is sick, demented, and actually truly scary. I couldn't put it down once I started it. The author has a way of luring you in and building tension to the point I almost couldn't stand. Great read. Looking forward to more from him.

Wormiful Book. Never thought I’d enjoy hearing about creepy crawlers but with each page, my hunger grew. A true masterpiece in horror and suspense.

The Troop. This book was so good I read it in less than 24 hours, couldn’t put it down!

Unnerving. I dare you to read this book without itching, scratching or watching a body part - looking for unfamiliar movement. Loved the book

Just what I was looking for. Glad I purchased....kept me up at night even though all I read and watch is horror!

Sickening. Not scary, not thrilling, mostly just disgusting.

Rekindled. I was in a reading slump for about a year and a half but this book has rekindled my fire. The incredibly morbid detail this book goes into is just so cleverly handled. I loved this book and the dynamic between the five scout boys. This is a book I would read again because I’m sure I missed some details that Mr. Cutter has so painstakingly placed to bring about a full picture for this adrenaline rush of a ride.

Truly Amazing!. Best book I've read in a long time. Bought it in paperback; but, felt compelled to come on here and leave a review, as well. Couldn't put this book down. Kept looking down at my skin to make sure nothing was moving underneath. Story is told very well. Read the last 200 pages this morning in one sitting. Looking forward to more from this author! Also, I hope to God they turn this into a movie. It would be great to see on the big screen.

Eek. Truly disgusting but compelling. I couldn’t put it down, although I had to skip the part about the kitten. That was a bridge too far. Looking forward to his other books.

Truly excellent. This novel kept me riveted throughout! Great read.

The Troop. Simply one of the best horror novels I have ever read

Worth it!. The troop does an excellent job of creating a suspenseful atmosphere! The book felt less of a thrilling novel and more of a dreadful tragedy. Surgically descriptive in illustrating the horrific setting, I’m sure to be looking forward to reading future books from Nick Cutter!

SUCH A GOOD BOOK. This was such a fun read. Kept me at the edge of my seat, I wish I could read it again for the first time!

Good book 📚. Very smooth and well written. 😁

AMAAZING!!. One of my favourite books ever!! Can't stop re- reading it. Shelley ur eevil!! And it's really well written! About parasites!! Genius!!

Masterpiece. Pure horror.

Thumbs up. Very satisfied with this easy read. Definitely kept me on my toes not knowing what tragedy would strike these young boys next. Enjoyed the small comedic chunks of the story that kept things fun during the dark storyline

Wasn’t that scared😐. I initially bought this book based solely on the fact that many reviews claimed the book to be one of the scariest horror novels they’ve ever read. I am a horror novice. I don’t like horror movies and tend to avoid anything that would scare the pants off of me. But I was ‘in the mood’ to be scared. I wanted to take a crack at the horror genre. After all you have Stephen King claiming on the cover of the novel that this book scared the hell out of him, who better than to judge something as being scary? Having said all of that this book didn’t scare me IN THE LEAST! I’m not trying to be tough or macho here, I was genuinely not scared. Was it creepy? Yes, it was creepy. Were some scenes disturbing, yes ( animal abuse/torture). I believe there are two factors behind why I wasn’t scared they way I thought I’d be— 1. I have read about/ watched TV shows/Documentaries about bloody and grisly murders— a lot of them. So much so I find it very difficult to come across a crime or book plot that will actually scare me. So the blood and gore and guts in this book didn’t bother me. 2. I have an infectious disease— Lyme Disease. I’ve been sick with it for 10 years now so I’m very well acquainted with the fact I have a living organism in my body multiplying and making me sick 24/7. Lyme is a disgusting insidious monster with a slow drawn out torture. While Lyme (arguably) isn’t as insidious as the worms in The Troop considering they cause you to have an insatiable hunger, making you go crazy, I still feel like my closeness with an infectious disease made this book less scary than I had anticipated, maybe I’m just too desensitized to cohabiting with microscopic corkscrew shaped monsters in my body. While the writing was great and the story the right kind of suspenseful, it also didn’t really lead up to anything amounting to a ‘surprise’ kind of moment. Rating it two stars because the writing was wonderful and I loved the presentation of the cross-examining, research essays and interviews with the parents of the boys. But also because it just wasn’t scary enough for me. •• BookTube: aGirlWithBookss Insta: @aGirlWithBookss Goodreads: Shaelene (aGirlWithBookss) Twitter: @aGirlWithBookss
