I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai & Christina Lamb Book Summary

A MEMOIR BY THE YOUNGEST RECIPIENT OF THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

As seen on Netflix with David Letterman
"I come from a country that was created at midnight. When I almost died it was just after midday."

When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive.

Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she became a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I AM MALALA is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.

I AM MALALA will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world.

Me encanto el libro.. Te enseña a valorar la vida. También a la mujer y cómo debemos ser tratadas y los derechos que tenemos que exigirlos. Que todos los niños y niñas deberían tener una educación.

I Am Malala. Excellent. Well written.

Profile in Courage. When I first heard the story of Malala Yousafzai, I was at home surrounded by my all of western creature comforts. I could not believe that for all the struggles in the world, that cowards would try to kill a girl simply seeking to learn. In this memoir though, Malala layers an intricate story that illuminates the delicate balance between tribal history, national customs, superstitions, ignorance, and power plays that lay the foundation for the radicalization of the disenfranchised into extremism. In some ways, if you look around the landscape of America, particularly at our echo chambers where disinformation and conspiracy theories thrive, you can see that we are not so safe from our own flavor of extremism. Even worse, we seem perpetually one election away from a future that more closely resembles The Handmaid’s Tale, than an idealized style of western liberalism. At every turn Malala shows how danger hovers around all those who pursue education, but at the same time, the promise of how empowering an education can be draws the young girls back to the classroom. Their courage to keep learning is mirrored by the incompetence around them and successive failures of politicians to develop and protect areas like Swat. You can’t help but wonder that if education and opportunity would have been available to all, that the allure and power of militant groups would have seem backward in comparison. In the absence of a stronger and more just government presence, you see how the dream of what Pakistan’s founder wanted for it, is still being fought for on the ground by everyday people like Malala and her father. I like to say I have had the fortune of being to many parts of the globe that fall into the 2nd and 3rd world category. That travel has made me more appreciative of what I have and disdainful of people complaining about their First world problems. Memoirs like this one and “The New Odyssey” really remind me to be grateful. They also remind us to fight for the just betterment of our little piece of Earth right here. So that opportunity is kept fair and equitable and injustice kept at bay.

Inspirational. Never have I read a book that paints Pakistan in a light beyond destruction and war. Through I Am Malala you learn about the beauty of Swat Valley and why Malala and her family are so keen to fix it. Malala and Zia are truly inspirational.

Great book to give kids of my age. I bought this book at Barnes n Noble. I learned so much from this book and the middle-eastern region. It made me think of terrorists in a new light and this book made me feel very angry. Alot of the 14-18 year old age group has no idea what is going on in these countries.

Boring. I couldn't keep reading it without falling asleep

amazing. this book hit me in the heart harder than the bombs hit the twin towers.

A Future Woman Leader. I truly enjoyed her, thank you your sharing your heartfelt journey.

A Great Book - at the top of the list!. I've listened to quite a few audio books this year and I'd have to say Malala's is at the top of the list. Probably the best, because it is so different. Very interesting stuff covering the history of Pakistan, customs, culture, the evolution of the Taliban in that area, etc. It's very helpful into understanding what's going on in that part of the world. i.e. I'd never even heard of Mullah Fazlullah. (The Pakistani Rush Limbaugh.) Radio is a very powerful political tool. Presently Fazlullah has been appointed leader of the Taliban. It was a little disappointing to me that Malala does not realize the true nature of the problems over there. Taliban's and Fazlullah's will come and go and be ever present in one form or another repressing all of that region not because of Islam, but because of religion. True Islam is simply a warrant for the impending slaughter of all "non-believers." Westerners have not read the Koran and do not understand that they will be shown no mercy! Their death has been ordained by God! It reads much the same as I would imagine Mein Kampf. Although i don't have the stomach to read that. But, all religion is more or less the same. Some of course far more radicalized, and elevated by poverty and hopelessness. Malala needs to read Christopher Hitchen's "God Is Not Great!" and Sam Harris's "Letter To A Christian Nation," as well as Richard Dawkins, etc. She seems positioned to lead Pakistan into the next decade or so, and needs to be aware that no one should be so arrogant, that they would think they know anything more about God than anyone else. You can still believe in God. But your daughter's don't have to be one of the 72 Virgins or slave wives as promised in the Koran. Men not allowing Education for women is really not the core problem you see. The core problem lies much deeper, and will be the fertile soil for hatred and war, murder and poverty. It's name is Religion! I hope the moderator of this review realizes the importance of the people who speak out against ideologies being heard. Anyhow, Malala's book is a triumph. Long live Malala!

I am Malala. Very good book. Educational in many different ways. I highly recommend it to anyone wishing to understand the Middle East and it's people.

If you are asking why she recovered from the shot. She was in a coma for months but the way the bullet passed through it did not that critical damage

I am Malala. This is an absolutely gripping story about a brave young girl who demonstrates how people should treat each other: with love and respect -- nothing more, nothing less. I applaud her parents for instilling these characteristics in her, and having the courage to let her develop into the person she has become. This book makes me want to visit the Swat Valley. A must read for anyone with a conscience.

bad. bad

Beautiful. The book is a well-written insight into the hardships that Malala has endured. She is an inspiration to everyone.

Amazing!. This book is about a girl and a dream. The girl is Malala, an ordinary girl at the beginning, a totally different person at the end of her journey. Her dream is to stop unfairness of girl's and women's rights. I wish I had the courage to speak up for others like Malala. Thanks you Malala for sharing your story with me!

I am Malala. This was a very well told and descriptive story! This helps us Americans see into the lives of people in the East. I hope Malala can be able to go home soon.

Must Read. This book should be mandatory reading in all USA schools. This young lady is a true heroine. What a fantastic read!!

❤️❤️❤️. Such an awesome book I loved it a lot ! 😊😊😊 it was so interesting and usually I never really like reading but this book was just wow ! It actually inspired me to read more books omg now I see why some people have such passion for reading.

Awesome book. Hi guys I definitely recommend this book for all people who want to learn about the Taliban. Also it was a great book as I read it in school.

Amazing story of life in a different culture!. One of the best books I have ever read. A fascinating story about an amazing teenage girl, who was deliberately shot by the Taliban and fortunately lived to tell her story. In so doing she has opened my eyes to appreciate a culture different than my own. I Am Malala is a book that I could not stop reading, and one that I am sure to remember for a very long time.

Suspicious. How can she recover that much quick with such a severe wound on brain?

So inspiring and life-changing!. Her candid opinions and experiences are so heartfelt and heart breaking.

Thanks. Amazing

Malala. Do yourself a favor and find out what the personal stories are behind the headlines. Inspiring and thought-provoking.

So slow. I could not finish it. That’s rare for me.

Wow. Remarkable family, book, life. Beautiful. Well worth reading, pondering and understanding.

Raw, honest, realistic.. I really enjoyed this book, Malala's writing is very impressive and taking into consideration her age she's very descriptive and I'm really inspired by her and her family's desire to break boundaries for a good cause. Would totally recommend.

It made my favorite book shelf. I Am Malala is an inspirational journey which immerses the reader into her Pakistani culture. The drastic events which change her society feed an unquenchable movement with Malala and her Father at the helm. Even if you have no interest in educational reform, you can follow Malala as she offers a profound perspective on our interconnected world.

Awesome Read!. Loved this book.

Must read.. As an American, this book provided insight into international issues from a native perspective and one that is important to understand. She is a great writer and so insightful for her age, words can’t describe the book, just read it!

More than just a biography. This book shows two extremes-great kindness and generosity against unbelievable cruelty and horror. Malala is an amazing and brave person. What she has been through both before, during and after her accident is very inspiring. This story also gives great insight into the histories of Swat, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Taliban and the involvement of the U.S. government. From the news here in the U.S. we often don't get the full story. But here it is! Highly recommended.

Inspiring!. This book is truly amazing and inspiring! The message in this book made me realize how well lucky we are and how we should do more to helps others.

Real model for change to come. It takes you back through the life ur chilhood , you feel like u fighting for ur own. Right to study , right to speak , write & love

Inspiring and beautifully written. First time I heard Malala speak was on a television show the Colbert Report. Her words were so inspiring and uplifting and to think this is just a young girl. I had to read the book! Loved every bit of it. Can wait to share this book with my nieces and my own daughter when she gets a little older.

Touching. A very moving story; I purchased the young readers edition for my daughter too.

I am Malala. This was such a beautiful piece of literature it should be required reading for grades 6 - 12. This young girl posses more wisdom and honor than many adults. God Bless Malala in her quest for education and peace.

A must read!. 'I am Malala' is an exceptional and insightful book about a young Pakistani campaigner that gives a different and hopeful outlook on life in Middle Eastern countries. Worth a read for sure!

Malala Yousafzai: Beyond Inspiring. Malala Yousafzai is beyond inspiring. She knows what she wants and didn't hesitate to make it happen. Bravo to this teen!

Truly Inspirational!. As a teacher, I wish all students felt this way about their education. Malala makes you remember how very much we, as westerners, can take for granted! Here's a young lady who can truly change the way things are with regards to education in these countries. The Taliban can't silence her! If anything, they've amplified her voice ten-fold!

Good book. Read with an open mind.

Malala. Fantastic book, it was amazing to see how hard she had to work and her thirst for knowledge almost cost her her life. It gives an accurate description of her trials and tribulations just to get a basic education.

I am malala. Loved this book. So inspired by a teenage girl. This book is a must, especially for teenage girls

Eye Opening. Reading this book has made me realize how privileged I am. Sometimes I complain about school and how I don't want to go. As I read I realized how ungrateful I can be. I don't have to fear about getting an education a free one at that. It also opened my eyes to the continuing injustices in the world. "One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world."-Malala Yousafzai

Great read. Good writing

It’s okay….. I love the story and bravery and courage this young woman has, I read this for a high school English project and had to write this kind of report thing on it. I got lost a lot with all the Pakistani names I couldn’t pronounce and all the many many events happening. I read all Harry Potter books, divergent, scarlet letter, + and never have had such a confusing book. I wish this was explained a bit better. Over all, great story and has true meaning. An inside perspective of what’s going on over seas.

I am Malala. Through faith we can do all things. What determination this young lady has exhibited. I pray the book inspires others to do great things.. Great read, thank you for giving me the opportunity to be blessed by this story..

Best book I have ever read!!. This book is very powerful and I hope that schools across the world reads this book as well. I hope Malala the best. This book opened my eyes for education and how important it is. Malala is my role model and always will be. I strongly reccomend this book!

Amazing and Inspirational Person. I can honestly say without hyperbole that Malala Yousafzai is the greatest human being alive. What an amazing person and so young!! She recovered and wrote this book in less than one year after getting shot in the face!! Great insight and history to the Swat Valley and her people. Amazing read. Buy it already!!!

Anne Frank of her generation. If Ms. Frank had access to television and the media, she'd have done what this incredible young woman has done. This is amazing story told beautifully, exposing a bigoted, fanatical bunch of psychopaths. If we've learned nothing from history, we should learn from Ms. Yousafzai that we are all entitled to an education, kindness, compassion, and the right to live freely.

Inspirational! A Must Read. This book is candid and frank about her desire and dream that all children go to school and that education is the key to solving the world's problems. She is right. Her message applies everywhere. She describes her life under the various disasters of Taliban rule, earthquake, flooding, being a refugee and finally living under the threat of murder. She believes in a ironi way that the Taliban actually helped her to make the education of everyone especially girls a cause celebre.

An True Inspiration!. As a lover of fiction and escaping from the real world, I never expected a non-fiction book, let alone a memoir, would be a book that I would enjoy - let alone love. I never imagined myself to even be interested in reading a non-fiction book, but this one really opened my eyes to the world of non-fiction, and that reading about the real world wasn't as dreadful as I thought it would be. This book, in fact, became one of my top five as one of the most inspirational I've ever read. I had heard about Malala back in 2012, like the rest of the world did, on the day she was shot by the Taliban. I have since seen her speak at a UN conference, and appear on talk shows multiple times with words of astounding wisdom. I became very fascinated by her and what she was standing for, and all I can say is that this book did not only answer all of my questions - it became an absolute inspiration and life lesson. I will never look at her the same way as before after reading her story. It opened up my eyes to a whole other world and changed the way I saw mine, and saw myself. I have also become far more appreciative of the rights I am given, whereas several others are denied theirs everyday. I learned that opening up my eyes to the real world can be just as thought provoking and inspiring as seeing a story play out in a fictional story, a symbol for something. I will continue tone inspired by this wise and wonderful young woman, and I will never forget how this book has changed me.

I Am Malala. This is a wonderfully rich and moving story about a young girl who is now known worldwide as an advocate for peace and education for every girl and every boy. Malala has become the hero she is today, in part, for one very simple reason - because her father told her she could be anything she wanted, despite her country's refusal of education under Taliban rule. With the love and support of family, Malala believed in herself and had such confidence in her convictions that even being shot by the Taliban could not deter her from spreading her message of hope for women and children's rights. Think of the countless other Malalas there would be in this world with the love and support of a father in a patriarchal society. This is a wonderfully written story of courage and conviction in some of Pakistani society's darkest days.

I am Malala. Great book she is so brave. 👍🏻

Amazing!!!. This book is amazing. Ever since I have read this book, I have changed my view on the world. Because of that, this is my all-time favourite book.

Great book. Must read!

Malala. Enjoyed the book,I bought it immediately to show my admiration for her courage to stand up for the right to go to school.I am impressed with her fathers commitment as well.I just know that she will be successful at anything she pursues. I wish her and family a great life. G.M.

Everyone should read. Very informative. It's hard to believe in this day in age there are still people living in fear for just wanting an education!
