The Problem with Second Chances by Piper Rayne Book Summary

For Rylan Greene and me, it was simple. Love only got us so far.

I’ve known him since we were six, long before he became the professional soccer star he is now. We’ve weaved in and out of one another’s lives as rivals, teammates, friends, and lovers. Until three years ago, when my life took a hit and I ran back to my small Alaskan town, Lake Starlight, away from anything or anyone that could hurt me.

He’s never far from my mind, a constant pining ache in my heart, but I’ve convinced myself I’m better off. But now, my best friend announces her engagement and that means Rylan will return home to stand as best man to her fiancé.

He’ll be back in my orbit for three whole weeks… but I can easily keep my distance. Sure, we’ll have to walk arm in arm down the aisle together, he’ll hold me close during the bridal party dance and we’ll stand for pictures next to each other. Nothing I can’t handle.

I’m so naïve though because he’s not in town for more than twenty-four hours before he knocks on my door. I should know by now, that the two of us will never be finished business.

This second chance romance spans sixteen years of a true love match that proves these two will only ever belong to one another.

Loved Calista and Rylan. The Problem With Second Chances is the first book in the Lake Starlight series, and it didn’t disappoint. This storyline was on a higher level of angst from the authors and I wasn’t mad at it. It has all the tropes: sports romance (soccer) young love, high school sweethearts, second chance, small town, friends to lovers, right person wrong time and forced proximity. Ugh, this book. It was so raw, emotional, gut wrenching at times. Calista and Rylan had been in each others lives since the young of six. They were friends, competitors, each others first on many things, and lovers. They both had big dreams and didn’t want to hold each other back, so they were in and out of each others lives through college and adulthood. But, how do you forget someone who is etched into your soul? We see them try to navigate these muddied waters. But time and circumstances aren’t always on their side. We see the love, the hurdles, the struggles, the sacrifices, the pining from each of them. Each suffering, but also longing, and loving each other from afar. Loved seeing the family banter, dynamics, and how her grandmother does everything she can to help her. Then ending, was a chefs kiss. A definite TBR must. The audiobook narration by Erin Mallon and Joe Arden was excellent. Two familiar voices who always draw you in and keep a hold on you with their character changes and emotions the put into the body of work. Great listen

Calista and rylan. I received a complimentary early release e-book prior to release and am voluntarily leaving a review. This is the merging of the authors two series and its longly awaited so I could not wait to read this book. Its stars are Calista Bailey (parents are Rome and Harley from Birth of a Baby Daddy) and Rylan Greene (parents are Hank and Marla from My Twist of Fortune). Both Rylan and Calista are characters, if you have read both series, that fans and readers have watched grow up before our eyes from age 10-17. Calista came to Alaska when she was a baby. Rylan is the only child or Hank Greene and his second wife, Marla. The two kids met when they were six years old, and they both fell in love with the sport of soccer. They both grew up in Alaska but in separate small towns that neighbored each other, and their grandmas, Dori and Ethel, were great friends who loved to matchmake. This story starts as Calista has been living in Alaska for three years is told that her best friend, Aubrey is getting married. She is marrying Declan who is Rylan's best friend. This means that Rylan will be coming home for a few weeks for the wedding and to help out. This story is about Rylan and Calista and their years of love and friendship and family. I loved that while we don't see their first kiss in person, we get to take a glance at when it happened and get all the details. I also loved that we get to see when Rylan asked her to be his girlfriend and even their very first time. This is their story, and they are both thirty at the start of this book. The title of the story is about second chances, but the truth is that Rylan and Calista have had way more chances than just two. They have loved each other from age 17 but never seemed to get it right. This is their last chance and well it's a very emotional and angst book and I loved every second of it. This story is filled with love, lust, pining, angst, passion and family, friends and a bunch of seniors that love to matchmake and a wedding.

FINALLY!! Rylan & Calista. Their story was better than I ever could have imagined…I laughed, I cried and my heart is so happy!! I love how Grandma Dori and Ethel were tied into it even though they had both passed and the new gang was ready to take over where they left off. This book was perfection and I’m so glad the Bailey’s and Greene’s story lines aren’t completely over yet!! I can’t wait to read more of the Lake Starlight books! Thank you Piper Rayne for giving us Rylan and Calista’s HEA!!

Great story. I had the pleasure of having both the ebook and audio version. They were the couple but the timing was not right and they split. Now their best friends are getting married and they are the maid of honor and best man now forced to deal with each other and the past. It's not that the two did not love each other but again the timing was not right. Can they make it work this time around or will they say their final goodbye. I loved that their friends loved them but were also protective of them. The story had some sadness, comedy, steam, friendship and more. Great ebook.

Calista and Rylin. I have loved both the Baileys and the Greene’s. It has been so awesome watching Calista and Rylin grow up. Thank you for writing their Happy ever after! Love that the members of the retirement home are still involved!

Great love story. Happy ending. Loved it

Finally! Rylan and Calista’s story. I have been anxiously awaiting for Rylan Greene and Calista Bailey’s story. You have received breadcrumbs of their relationship through the Greene series and the Bailey series. Rylan and Calista met while playing soccer as children. When they were young, they were rivals, as they were they best players in the area. In their teens, they started dating. They broke up when they went to different colleges, but ended up playing for professional soccer teams in Chicago and ended up back together. Something major happens (don’t want to spoil anything), and Calista breaks things off, and she runs home to Lake Starlight. A few years have passed and Rylan and Calista’s best friends are getting married and they are best man and maid of honor. This is a nice setup to get them to work through their issues. I have to say, initially, wasn’t a fan of Calista, and I wanted to tell Rylan to run away from this hot mess. But as the story unfolded, you understand that there is more at play here. Overall, great start to a new series.

Calista and Rylan forever!. I have been waiting for Calista and Rylan's story since they were kids and the authors did not disappoint. EXCEPT! They broke my heart in the first three chapters, but I understood why. This book brought the Baileys and the Greenes full circle. Calista and Rylan couldn't have a fairytale relationship. Oh no. That would have been one short book. Putting their story in a second chance romance really made them work for their HEA. There was a lot of emotions and feelings that needed to be worked through. And it wouldn't be a Lake Starlight-Sunrise Bay story without the meddling grandmas 2.0. Throw in a wedding not their own to have to be forced in proximity to each other and we have some sizzling scenes. Lots of angst, creative banter, and small town meddling made this long awaited book amazing. Erin Mallon and Joe Arden were perfectly cast as Calista and Rylan. They embodied the characters and brought their personalities to life. I received an advance copy of this book at my request and voluntarily left this review.

Most emotional book this duo has ever written. Wow. I finished this a few hours ago and have been digesting it ever since. The Problem With Second Chances is the love story of Rylan Greene and Calista Bailey. Those of us who are dedicated Piper Rayne readers have been reading about these two as they have grown up through the love stories of the Bailey and Greene families. It is a love story which spans more than a decade from their days as six year olds on the soccer field to thirty year old adults. A letter from Grandma Dory to Calista says “Sometimes the right person comes into our life at the wrong time.” The problem has been that although they have loved each other since before they were seventeen years old, they have connected and parted repeatedly, finally committing to a relationship when they both were drafted to play professional soccer in Chicago. Calista left Rylan after her career ending injury three years before, citing irreconcilable differences. They are thrown together again to complete tasks for their best friends’ wedding as Maid of Honor and Best Man. This has to be one of the most emotional books by this writing duo that I have ever read. The book flashes back to many times during their years together and includes the involvement of the “Grandma Gang” in trying to bring the two of them together again. The authors masterfully illustrate how we can become so entrenched in our idea of what we think we want most in this world that we lose sight of what we need. The question that this book raises is how do we recognize when it is the right time to choose what we need? This is one of those books that no one should miss out on. It is going to stick with me for a long time. I don’t think that there is anything about it that I am not in love with. Don’t hesitate over reading this one. It was well worth it. I am voluntarily submitting this review after reading to an advanced complementary copy of this book.

At last!. Rylan and Calista have grown up before our eyes as each of his older siblings have found their own HEAs. So to see them together, and apart, as adults was a story I didn’t want to miss. And it was definitely worth the wait and fulfilled all my expectations. Not only do Greene family members make appearances, but my original loves…the Bailey family…is along for the ride, too. I’ve always loved that Ry and Calista were the bridge between two fantastic family series. And those crazy geriatric meddlers are back as well, so it's full circle for the beginning of this new aeries. There’s no lost of love between Rylan and Calista, just disappointments and lots of fragile emotions. It’s heartbreaking but I enjoyed their journey back to each other and the growth as a couple and individuals.

Wonderful Story & Listen🎧A Heartfelt Delight!. This fabulous second chance, sports romance novel not only grabbed my attention and captivate it the entire time, it tugged on my heartstrings too. Piper Rayne is a gifted author with a wonderful writing style, the storylines she creates are interesting and original and the characters are realistic, easy to relate to, connect with, easy to care about and root for too. Calista Bailey and Ryan Green have known each other since they were six years old and they have been different things to each other in different parts of their lives, from rivals, to teammates, to friends and then lovers. They both had similar dreams and goals, including their love for playing soccer, except her dream ended, while his took off. Despite being happy for Ryan, Calista was struggling, something Ryan did not pick up on until it was too late because he already lost her and she went back home, back to Lake Starlight, Alaska. Three years later, Calista and Ryan’s best friends are getting married, and they will be their maid of honor and best man. I loved how everything played out in this book, the meddling family and the shenanigans are both hilarious and heartwarming. The story alternates back in time to give us glimpses of the past to see what led them to where they are today. It was clear the chemistry between them never sizzled out, but can they get their act together and work out their differences, are there really any differences? This wonderfully plotted story has the perfect balance of drama, humor, charm, heart-warming moments, heartfelt emotions and steamy romance. Piper Rayne, thank you for another delightfully entertaining story and emotional rollercoaster ride.  🎧📚🎧 And for the amazing narration, Erin Mallon and Joe Arden’s superb talent truly shined as they brought these characters and their story to life. They had a complete understanding of who these characters were, performed the roles perfectly, and were believable in every role they played. Mallon nailed it as Calista, grasped every side of her personality, and Arden did the same for Ryan. You could hear how much heart they put into their work as they capture the character’s emotions and project them into their performance, and making you feel every single one. These entertaining storytellers are versatile voice artists and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another wonderful listen.

Rylan & Calista Forever ❤️. I’ve waited for this book for a long time & it did not disappoint. The roller coaster of emotions to the happily ever after has me swooning. I love how this book brought two amazing series together ❤️

The problem with second chances. Interesting to meet them as adults .

So darn good. This is the book that I have been waiting for and it was worth the wait. It was everything I was expecting and so much more. This book brings together two of my most favourite series ever, the Baileys and the Greenes. Moving from past to present with ease, we get your typical Piper Rayne journey that tugs at your heart and had me tearing up, smiling, laughing and swooning. Well written, the characters will burrow into your soul with their love of family and the hilarious antics that they become involved in (not to mention the grandmothers entertaining interference). Calista Bailey and Rylan Greene have a soul deep connection that started when they were six years old. They know each other better than anyone else and yet there were times I wanted to smack them both across the back of the head and shake some sense into them. If this book is anything to go by then I cannot wait to see what Piper and Rayne have in store for this series.

Disappointed. I normally love all the books by Piper Rayne, but on this occasion I just didn’t like story line of Calista Bailey. I just didn’t like her character- which is a shame as I was really looking forward to reading this book- to me she was a really unlikeable character.

Life may not go your way but love will find a way!. Piper and Rayne you did an amazing job with Calista’s and Rylan’s book. I was so looking forward to reading it and you exceeded my expectations. I loved Calista and Rylan from when they were small children and throughout the Bailey and Greene series. I like how the authors weaved the theme that life does not turn out the way you want - sometimes the alternate is way better! Calista and Rylan finally got their act together after a reality check from members of the Bailey and Greene families as well as their friends and Grandma Dori’s friends at the Lake Starlight Retirement Home! The little push from Harley and Hank to Calista and Rylan makes them admit they love each other and were destined to be together. Thank you for an amazing book! I recommend this book to other readers.

All the feels. Audio/E-Book Review I was so excited when I heard we were getting a new series that brings the Baileys and the Greenes together. These families are in my top ten go to families when I need to escape, I feel like they are friends and they always cheer me up. The Problem With Second Chances is book 1 in the Lake Starlight Series and if Rylan Greene and Calista Bailey’s second chance is anything to go by the writing duo of Piper Rayne will certainly have another hit series on their hands. Calista and Rylan have a connection that goes deep, it started when they were kids and they know each so well they often finish each other’s sentences. But they missed their chance and now it’s time for some meddling from their grandmothers who seem to have taken over from their great grandmothers to jump in and stir them up. The narrators, Erin Mallon & Joe Arden were wonderful and perfect for this book. They really did bring these characters and their journey to life for me and I loved listening to their wonderful voices as they hit the emotions and the banter as well as the love. This book has it all, it’s witty, it’s hilarious, it’s full of love but more importantly it’s another generation from the families I love.

This small town second chance romance has it all!. The Problem with Second Chances is one highly anticipated story about Rylan Greene and Calista Bailey! Their book does not disappoint. I’m honestly not sure if my review will do this story justice! This small town second chance romance has it all. Great family bonds, witty banter, heartwarming as well as very steamy moments and the whole storyline had my attention from the beginning. Calista and Rylan have grown up with each other. Their journey is tumultuous throughout the years and the struggles as well as their sizzling chemistry seem hard to ignore. Their story is nothing if not emotional and we learn now and then about what they went through in their past and how it’s shaped them today! Will the family help them to see what really matters? I wholeheartedly loved this book. The authors have outdone themselves in writing it. An unputdownable story I highly recommend! Go 1-click!

Rylan and Calista. "𝙄 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙜𝙚𝙩 𝙤𝙛𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙘𝙤𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧. 𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙧𝙮-𝙜𝙤-𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙." THE PROBLEM WITH SECOND CHANCES is the first book in the Lake Starlight series by Piper Rayne Rylan and Calista bonded over their love of soccer and became everything to each other but then life kept pulling them apart. Back together in Lake Starlight for their best friend's wedding, now might finally be their time. Rylan and Calista’s story has been years in the making and it is finally here. Rylan and Calista have been on and off since they were fifteen but one thing or another kept pulling them apart. I felt for Rylan because he always laid out his heart to Calista but she always pushed back. Calista was a little over the top for me. This book did bring tears to my eyes as some beloved characters have moved on and will be missed. Joe Arden and Erin Mallon did a great job bringing the characters and story to life. Joe's Irish accent is so swoony. Get ready for… small town, best friends, enemies, frenemies, second chance, found family, family saga, and dual first-person point of view. 4 Maple Leafs | 3 Flames

4 ½ Stars for this second chance romance. I loved Rylan and Calista and their on again off again romance had me hooked. I felt so bad for Calista that she wasn't able to fulfill her dream like Rylan did and I can see how she kinda resented him for it because Rylan was oblivious to it all. The banter between the characters is very realistic and the old lady's matchmaking had me laughing. The steam factor was off the charts! A fabulous start to a new series and I can't wait for the next book. Rylan and Calista started out rivals in Soccer when they were ten but as the years went on, they became friends and then lovers. They would be together and then something would tear them apart ... again and again. Rylan and Calista are best man and maid of honor at their best friend's wedding and they know that they will have to see each other, but they didn't anticipate the old lady's matchmaking involvement. I received an early copy courtesy of Valentine PR.
