The Secret Life Of Sunflowers by Marta Molnar Book Summary

“This book draws all the emotions out of you. I went from tears to snorting with laughter. It was both lighthearted and heart breaking, yet it inspires me to live my best life!” Michele Cox

When Hollywood auctioneer Emsley Wilson finds her famous grandmother's diary while cleaning out her New York brownstone, the pages are full of surprises. The first surprise is, the diary isn't her grandmother's. It belongs to Johanna Bonger, Vincent van Gogh's sister-in-law.

Johanna inherited Vincent van Gogh's paintings. They were all she had, and they weren't worth anything. She was a 28 year old widow with a baby in the 1800s, without any means of supporting herself, living in Paris where she barely spoke the language. Yet she managed to introduce Vincent's legacy to the world.

The inspiration couldn't come at a better time for Emsley. With her business failing, an unexpected love turning up in her life, and family secrets unraveling, can she find answers in the past?

“This book was so much more than I had expected, and I had high expectations... one of the most beautiful stories I've read in years.”  Kaela Stokes

The secret life of sunflowers. I really enjoyed this book. The characters are well written. I learned more about Vincent Van Gogh and became a fan of his art. As an artist and a woman I love reading stories about strong women and the lives they create from the tragedy in their lives. I highly recommend this book.

Such a impactful book. Historical fiction about Vincent Van Gogh that I never realized. The power of women!

Beautiful story of love, loss and belief in self. I loved this story about strong women, art, and love. Not what I expected but truly delighted and grateful to have read it.

The Secret Life of Sunflowers. The secret life of sunflowers was a good read. It reminded me of another favorite, The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. The three brave women, generations apart, shared a tenacity to keep pushing forward even when the path seemed blocked or hopeless. They moved on ahead. I may go back and read it a second time, and a third. I enjoyed the art references and foundation from beginning to end. Thank you, Marta, for sharing your research about this amazing woman and “ the rest of the story” by conjuring up the two other women over three generations later. Keep on writing! You did well.

Fantastic Read. I very much enjoyed the story. I visited The Van Gogh immersion experience twice when it was in our city. I sat through it twice each time. His artwork, his story, and this book, are all mesmerizing.

Loved it. Wonderful Simply a wonderful historical fiction read.

The Secret Life of Sunflowers. I did not know about Johanna before reading this book, although I knew much about Van Gogh. She was such a strong woman in a time when that was much less accessible than now. Love the book. Couldn’t put it down.

Great!. Loved it! Inspiring!

I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed reading this book. So much so that I had a hard time putting it down to cook dinner or clean my house. The story was very interesting and I could imagine me in the story as if I were there.

Inspiring Story. Fantastic characters, kept me very engaged as I flew through the book. It’s the kind of book that now that’s it’s over, I’ll miss the characters!

Loved this book. Really inspiring story. I was rooting for both of the women and learned a lot along the way.

Not gripping. I just didn’t find it captivating. The usual girl heroes which are becoming overdone in writing. Theo and Vincent are in the background the entire time. The writing is peppered with historical facts so you could call it historical fiction. The reading and writing style was simple. You would have to know something about van Gogh art to appreciate it. It seemed to drone on flowery and then, just end. It hits all the salient points a women’s lib book which include , gays, living together, casual sex in present times with the 1880’s modesty, codes of decorum and conduct, etc. I think the authors self promotion of the book is what has driven it. It is not likely I would recommend it as a pleasure read. I do think it was important to know how Johanna Bonger played a role in preserving Van Goghs art, otherwise, it may well have been lost to history.

The Secret Life of Sunflowers. Loved this book and the idea of two women a hundred years apart whose lives were intertwined !

The secret life of sunflowers. I loved this book. I enjoyed how everyone in Emsley’s family was a little eccentric. And I loved learning more about Van Gogh. Throughout the book my mind kept seeing his paintings.

The secret life of sunflowers. I loved this book. I couldn’t put it down and what a devotion Jo had to her husbands work and to her brother in law, Vincent Van Gogh.

Read sample before buying. This book is self-published because it was rejected by publishers 17 times. The book renewed my faith in the publishing industry. It is so badly written that I had to work to keep from laughing at the 7th grade level metaphors. The characters are not fleshed out so much as papered with cartoonish stereotypes. Apparently some people enjoyed it so all I can say is if you prefer to read books that are well-written, be sure to read the sample before you buy this.

Excellent, engrossing read. Loved this book! It delves into the stubborn, caring and dare I say, the early feminism of the sister-in-law, of Vincent Van Gogh. Who struggled with the terrible depression of her husband and brother in-law, the conditions of mental health care during those dark days. Then we spring forward to present day and Emsley, who has fallen into hard times and through the loss of her grandmother, finds strength and redemption in Johanna Bonger’s struggle. Excellent, engrossing read. Do not miss this one.

Eh... Interesting read, but leave much to be desired. I was more interested in Jo’s story than anyone else in the book. The ending felt rushed and the time jumps left more questions than answers. Prompted me to go do some more research myself.

Refreshing. Refreshing and insightful to learn about history & art that’s been written in a beautiful, inspiring way. I’ve never read a book like this and loved it. Learning about the world and real people, with a dreamy romance story added in.

Success against the odds.. The story of Johanna Bonger the woman whose determination brought Vincent Van Gogh’s art to prominence and success. Based on true characters and research this is a novel that links her story to the present day when her diaries and letters are left to a a young woman Emsley by her grandmother. This is well written with a great characterization of Johanna and the difficulties she faces and the story of Emsley adds a lighter note to the book. Both women have ambitions and determination. There were tears in my eyes sometimes but also laugh out loud sections. Definitely a worthwhile and enjoyable read.
