Judgment Prey by John Sandford Book Summary

Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers team up to crack an unsolvable case in this thrilling new novel by #1 New York Times bestselling author John Sandford.

Alex Sand was spending the evening at home playing basketball with his two young sons when all three were shot in cold blood. A wealthy federal judge, there’s no short list of people who could have a vendetta against Sands, but the gruesome murders, especially that of his children, turn their St. Paul community on its head. Sand was on the verge of a major donation to a local housing charity, Heart/Twin Cities, and with the money in limbo, eyes suddenly turn to his grieving widow, Margaret Cooper, to see what she might do with the money. Margaret, distraught over the death of her family, struggles to move forward, and can’t imagine how or why anyone would target her husband.

With public pressure mounting and both the local police force and FBI hitting dead end after dead end, Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers are called in to do what others could not: find answers. With each potential lead flawed, Davenport and Flowers are determined to chase every theory until they figure out who killed the Sands. But when they find themselves being stonewalled by the most unlikely of forces, the two wonder if perhaps each misdirection could lead them closer to the truth.

Not Sandford’s best!. Too many story lines failing to smoothly come together. The ending was anticlimactic! The banter between Lucas & Virgil is getting stale! If you have a couple of days, go for it! But, be fore warned, this book you will be able to put down!

Boring. I have enjoyed the Prey series for years and was so excited to read this latest installment on my vacation. It was boring and a total waste of my time.

Judgement Prey. Worst book I’ve ever read. Total waste of time.

Fantastic read!. The Prey series never fails to grab you at the beginning and keep you involved till the last twist. Lucas and Virgil, indeed, all of the characters, are so fully developed that you either invested in their lives or nasty ending. Do we really have to wait till April, 2024????

Knew the end in the first chapter. Very disappointed to be correct. I expected more.

Woke?. By his comments about people on the right, it’s pretty obvious that Camp is on the left. It’s not too surprising that he created a protagonist who is willing to take the law into his or her own hands and kill people. He writes a good book, but seems to have very poor judgement.

Judgment Prey. A nice change of pace—enjoyed Lucas and Virgil together. The ending left me unfulfilled, cold, like Sanford ran out of time and just quit. Would I read it again? Probably not.

Partners. 4 Stars. Typical Sanford. He’s always so very good. Just about any other author would get 5 for this but a Sanford 4 is something of his own. Lucas might have met his long lost baby sister in Cooper. I actually agree with how she felt. In the end, the results she sought were almost there. Virgil has always been Lucas’ conscience, none really more than here. These two are one of the most fun teams to read. At first I thought losing a Virgil book every year was a problem. Maybe I was wrong. The Partner books are worth it. I can’t wait ‘til next Fall.

Solid read.. A straightforward Davenport/Flowers read, with the witty asides and steady pace you expect (and thankfully without the political lecture). Not as action-packed as some of his earlier stuff in this series, but it doesn’t disappoint. As an aside, as seems increasingly all too common Apple can’t get out of its own way. On the last page, before you can even read the finale, the page is covered with a pop-up about buying the next book.

I love these two!. I adore all the Lucas/Virgil/ and extended families books.

Pray for Judgment. Loved this book! Lucas and Virgil have ongoing rhetorical conversations, wonderfully consistent in all of John Stanford’s books that feature the two wise and wily law enforcement officers, that make me laugh out loud! To say I enjoyed this book is not enough. The locale descriptions, the truly real characters in his books, the fast paced action of his words, makes me want to read his books as fast as I can…but then, I don’t want the story to end! I have read all all of his books and find new adventures in each one!

I didn’t like it. I’m a loyal Sandford follower but in my humble Judgment this book failed. I felt it was fractured and hard to follow. I really missed Richard Farrone but that was hardly Mr. Sandford’s fault.

Its OK. I have read all the Prey books and am a fan. This book has a good plot line but indifferent interaction between Davenport and Flowers which is often one of the strengths. The silly, artificial ending appears to be a setup for a sequel. The book feels like it was forced.

Great Read. Another great “Prey” novel. Hard to put down.

Judgement Prey. It’s like watching paint dry.

Mediocrity. The book was okay but not up to usual standards

Worst prey, book ever. The plot was lame in the audiobook. The narrator was terrible. I don’t know why they’ve changed to a different one, but they need to rethink that.

Would really love to know how it ends. Somehow Apple messed up the download on this book. Made it a couple chapters in like I'm on preview for it. However I did get charged for the book!

Judgement Prey. I’ve read them all and this is one of the best! Great story line and I always enjoy the “back and forth” between Lucas and Virgil.

Good , not great.. The best novel with Davenport and Flowers was “Ocean Prey”…loved it !!

Judgement Prey. Virgil says a novel has a great beginning, a great climax, and a swamp in between. Even the swamp was good in this novel. VF and LD never disappoint.

Excellent as always. Sandford crushes it once again
