To Catch a Bad Guy by Marie Astor Book Summary

Janet Maple’s stellar career ended with a layoff and her boyfriend of five years told her that he wants to be just friends. When she lands a job at one of New York’s premier boutique investment firms, Janet begins to hope that her luck is finally turning for the better. Not only is she happy with her new paycheck, but things also seem to be looking up on the personal front, as the company’s handsome attorney expresses keen interest in Janet. However, her euphoria is short-lived, as Janet soon discovers alarming facts about her new employer’s business tactics. When her boss dismisses her suspicions as groundless, Janet finds herself confiding to a cute IT engineer, Dean Snider. The closer she gets to Dean, the more Janet is tempted to break her rule of not dating co-workers, but what she doesn’t realize is that everything she knows about Dean, including his occupation and even his name, is a lie.

Dennis Walker is a top-notch white collar crime investigator who will stop at nothing to put culprits away. When an opportunity for an undercover assignment at one of New York’s premier boutique investment firms comes up, Dennis jumps at the chance, adopting a persona of geeky IT engineer, Dean Snider. While he may be an ace at his job, years of experience fail him when Dennis meets Janet Maple and finds himself torn between his professional obligations and his personal desires. Will he have to choose between his feelings and duty, or will he find a way to satisfy both?

Not expectedThis was definitely not a romance novel. The writing & story line were enjoyable but I could not find any sympathy for Janet. 1st she was still tolerating her supposed best friends treatment of putting her down, walking all over her & attempting to run her life at the age of 29. Even tho they hadn't really been close friends in several years. 2nd she was very self-righteous in her attitude towards 'Deans' undercover work when she herself had worked for the DA. As if the DA's office has never used any spies for prosecution! Overall she was a poor to mediocre heroine. I'm more interested in finding out what happens to Dennis & the Bostoff family than anything else about Janet..Score: 2/5

Personal offenseI'm sorry but I'm married to a very handsome IT professional. The writers description of one was so offensive it is going to join the small list of books I started and never finished. There was no need for such an offensive description and had no bearing on the story. I ask that the author thinks in the future how readers may feel about the characters and their jobs. Unless it is a beauty and the beast tale then there is no need to be so derogatory..Score: 1/5

A Mystery with Minor RomanceFirst time reader of Ms Astor’s work. I enjoyed it. The characters are engaging and the situation is interesting, however a little too simplistic. If everyone graduated from the Ivy League schools they don’t seem very smart. If she is such a good investigator why didn’t she figure out why she was downsized? The storyline progresses nicely and the ending starts out satisfying but then just stops. This is the first in a series and the ending prompts you to the next book..Score: 3/5

Don't readThe category of this book shouldn't be contemporary. There is not a love story. I was really thought out the book. I had to push myself to finish this book. Hoping that the end would be better than the beginning and middle..Score: 2/5

InterestingI though this was a great book, I enjoyed reading it.Score: 5/5

Not terribleGood premise for the story, but rather dragged down by the minutiae. Less detail is better than too much if it bogs down the feel of the tale and induces boredom in the reader. It finally picked up and got more interesting but not until I was more than half way through the book. I'd have liked more character development as I thought that the two main characters were quite likable, and perhaps a little less time spent on the main character's best friend, Lisa, who is really just a prissy, stuck up gold digger with a mother who taught her to be that way. I couldn't figure out why her character seemed much more fully rounded out than the two most important characters, Janet and Dennis/Dean. Even Dean/Dennis's back story was more detailed than the main character of Janet. Overall I would recommend this book, and it is nice to read something that isn't overloaded with profanity and gratuitous sexual situations. This book contains none of that and is safe for younger readers..Score: 3/5

From Frying into the FireTo Catch a Bad Guy is easy to read and it is hard to put down. Losing her boyfriend and downsized out of her job with the DA was hard.
