The Butler by Wil Haygood Book Summary

This mesmerizing companion book to the award-winning film, The Butler traces the Civil Rights Movement and explores crucial moments of twentieth century American history through the eyes of Eugene Allen—a White House butler who served eight presidents over the course of thirty-four years.

During the presidencies of Harry Truman to Ronald Reagan, Eugene Allen was a butler in the most famous of residences: the White House. An African American who came of age during the era of Jim Crow, Allen served tea and supervised buffets while also witnessing some of the most momentous decisions made during the second half of the twentieth century, including Lyndon B. Johnson’s work during the Civil Rights Movement and Ronald Reagan getting tough on apartheid. But even as Allen witnessed the Civil Rights legislation develop, his family, friends, and neighbors were still contending with Jim Crow America.

Timely, “poignant and powerful” (Kirkus Reviews) The Butler also explores Eugene Allen and his family’s background along with the history of African Americans in Hollywood and also features a foreword by the film’s director Lee Daniels.

The Butler. This is not a book. It is an advertisement for a movie made about a man who served as a butler at the White House. I was hoping for some insight on life with past Presidents as a servant in the White House. This " book " gave no real insight. The most disappointing purchase I have ever made. Do not purchase. I am sure the subject butler was a very nice man but this book is not worth more than a dollar and really should not be called a book. I could derive more info from the cover of People magazine while standing in a grocery line. I can't seem to be able to submit a rating of no stars so I gave it lowest possible to be able to submit. I apologize for being so negative but this is a ripoff.

The Butler. I thought I was buying an actual book, an historical novel, not just background information on movie background information. Looking forward to seeing the movie, but Disappointed I won't be saying "the book was better."

The Butler. I was expecting the story of the movie. This is a well written documentary with loads of historic events.

It's. It the movie- beware. Sometimes they say to movie didn't do justice to the book. So I bought the book before seeing the movie. This is not the book the movie was made from. It's more about how the movie was made and the movies place in black movie history. Good read but not what I wanted

Disappointed. I though this would be more about what inspired the movie. It was mostly about the movie. I did enjoy the beginning when it talked about Eugene Allen's story. I guess I need to go find the original article written about him.

The butler. What a waste of time and money. Nothing more than a promotion of the cast of the movie. Not even well written.

The butler. I want my money back, it doesn't open in my iPad .......

I want a refund. This is not a book but an advertisement for the movie. To charge $11 for a book that is 200 pages of nothing is wrong. I want my money back.

the Butler. Looks like I will have to wait for the movie to get a better glimpse of the Butler. 152 pages bummer I was hoping for an interesting historical book.id much rather read the book about his life as the movie will leave so much of his story out. I thought I was purchasing a biography instead it was an introduction for the movie.

Very Disappointed. This book was not at all what I expected. Very little about the life of Eugene Allen and a lot about the upcoming movie and more historical facts....UGH!

The Butler. Really disappointed in this book! I should have read the reviews. I really thought I would be reading some insights to life in the White House from "the other side." Instead the story revolved around Hollywood movie making. Guess I will have to see the movie instead to get what I was looking for!

Very Disappointing. I was hoping the book would be the written version of the movie. Instead it was a history lesson on African American Films and history. I was hoping to learn more about the "Butler". Instead I skipped sections of the book, hoping it would get better. I hope to see the movie and have it fill in the many blanks the book left out.

NOT a BOOK, but an ADVERTISEMENT!. This is a glorified background on the movie, nothing else, compete waste of money and I feel duped by this company and the author for listing it as an autobiography which it is NOT.

The Butler. I wanted to know more about Eugene And his wife! And I felt like I was left hanging? Did I miss something or was this really about Lee? I hope the movie will give more info, but I think that's wishful thinking the books are always better than the movie.

Not the story. This book is more about African-Americans in film rather than the story of "the butler". Disappointed

The Butler. This was a rip off. I thought it was a book about the real life of Eugene Allen. I wish I had gotten a sample. I feel exploited! I want my money back. Do not buy.

The Butler. An excellent companion book to the movie! I thought it would be the screenplay, but I was pleasantly surprised. This book gives a rich history and background to the movie. I now want to see the movie again!!

Very Misleading Title. I wish i had read the other reviews before purchasing. I suppose this is one of the drawbacks to downloading as opposed to buying the physical book...you can't look through it. This is not the story of the Butler. It is an advertisement for the movie ...that i had to pay for! The balance of the book was a history lesson about African Americans in the cinema. While somewhat interesting, it was certainly NOT what I thought I was buying and I feel deceived & misled.
