Emily Kimelman

Unleashed by Emily Kimelman Book Summary

My dog once took a bullet that was intended for me.

A bullet that ripped through his chest, narrowly missing his heart, and exited through his shoulder blade, effectively shattering it. This left him unconscious on the floor of my home. Amazingly, this bullet did not kill him.

Ten years ago I adopted Blue as a present to myself after I broke up with my boyfriend one hot, early summer night with the windows open and the neighborhood listening. The next morning I went straight to the pound in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Articles on buying your first dog tell you never to buy a dog on impulse. They want you to be prepared for this new member of your family, to understand the responsibilities and challenges of owning a dog. Going to the pound because you need something in your life that's worth holding onto is rarely, if ever, mentioned.

I asked the man at the pound to show me the biggest dogs they had. He showed me some seven-week-old Rottweiler-German shepherd puppies that he said would grow to be quite large. Then he showed me a six-month-old shepherd that would get pretty big. Then he showed me Blue, the largest dog they had.

The man called him a Collie mix and he was stuffed into the biggest cage they had, but he didn't fit. He was as tall as a Great Dane but much skinnier, with the snout of a collie, the markings of a Siberian husky, the ears and tail of a shepherd and the body of a wolf, with one blue eye and one brown. Crouched in a sitting position, unable to lie down, unable to sit all the way up, he looked at me from between the bars, and I fell in love.

"He's still underweight," the man in the blue scrubs told me as we looked at Blue. "I'll tell you, lady, he's pretty but he's skittish. He sheds, and I mean sheds. I don't think you want this dog." But I knew I wanted him. I knew I had to have him. He was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

Blue cost me $108. I brought him home, and we lived together for years. He was, for most of our relationship, my only companion. But when I first met Blue, a lifetime ago now, I had family and friends. I worked at a crappy coffeehouse. I was young and lost; I was normal.

Back then, at the beginning of this story, before I'd ever seen a corpse, before Blue saved my life, before I felt what it was like to kill someone in cold blood, I was still Joy Humbolt.

I'd never even heard the name Sydney Rye.

P.S. The dog does not die.

Great travel/beach read. This book is perfect to take to the beach. Easy read, full of action and comedy.

Unleashed.. Enjoyed this book very much. It will keep you on the edge until the end. Lots of turns will keep you guessing if he enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others thank you so much.

Unleashed. Loved this book...couldn’t put it down. Can’t wait to read the next one in the series!

Fast paced book that draws you in immediately. Loved the book. Nope didn’t mind the cursing. Loved the fast pace of the story can wait to read book 2! Blue is the best dog ever

Unleashed. fun adult read. Blue is amazing and yeah parts made me cry because the characters are written to be remembered and appreciated.

Unleashed can be let go. Too easy to figure out, circumstances too convenient. Nothing wrong with reading a free version but it's not very fulfilling. Wouldn't read or recommend this author/series.

Unleashed. Great book, twist, turns and excitement, and love Blue

Unleached. Mystery thriller with a very unorthodox lead character that makes it an interesting and fun read.

Unleashed. This book was great. Could not wait to get back to it every night. Charming characters and fast paced story like. Can't wait to get the others.

Unleashed. Great book, couldn't put it down. It's always good when the dog lives. Her curiosity is a little too aggressive and gets a little confusing. Love the dog characters, wish there were more of their personalities.

Impressive style. Ms Kimelman has definitely found her voice. I cannot say that I liked joy as a person, but I never doubted her. This is amazing to me as I have read many accomplished authors who had characters I did not believe. I am very impressed with the authenticity the author maintained. There is a style that it’s both minimal and complete. Thank you Emily Kimelman Clint worstman

Awesome. Very good book. Absolutely loved it!

Unleashed. Fast moving. Enjoyable characters. Plot surprises.

Unleashed. Really good read!

Unleashed. I'm writing this review because I absolutely loved your book and you have such a nice was of asking I laughed, cried and related. Thank you for teaching me in the dark and pulling me into the not so dark. Now on to your next one!

Unleashed. "Unleashed" is one of those adult mysteries that is extremely interesting to read, but not so baudy that the reader feels it is a waste of time. Quite the opposite, this mystery keeps the reader's attention by quickly getting to know the personalities of these well developed characters. From Joy's (aka Sidney Rye) dog walking business and all the unique characters she encounters to her own faithful dog, Blue, this intriguing mystery will keep the reader up, turning the pages. Her inquisitive detective-like mind takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of Manhattan, from famous parks and addresses to underground tunnels and escape routes, leading to murder, long lost treasure and eventually to revenge and satisfaction. Yes, this mystery is certainly one that is worth reading!!

Fun read. I enjoyed the plot and setting of this mystery and plan to read more in the series.

Unleashed. Great book

Not bad. A decent enough plot that I'll continue the series. The characters react realistically to unlikely situations. The dialogue seems fitting for the characters. The f word is used a bit too liberally. Sex is toned down. The dog taking the bullet was predictable. Other than leading to the job, Blue serves no other purpose. Perhaps in other books he becomes more than a jacket cover.

Unleashed. Darn fine book!

Thanks. Captured emotions well and threw in a few surprises.

Hooked!!. Great read!!!!!

New favourite. Unputdownable! So many unexpected twists and such an imperfect heroine...loved it

?. Beautifully written characters you can believe. A great start to the series.

Unleashed. It keep turning pages and hard to put down

Unleashed. I read this book in one sitting. It kept me involved so I wanted to keep going and I love the dog.

Unleashed. Loved the writing story characters all of it was a great read

Unleashed. You r a new author for me & I was both surprised, entertained, moved. Thank you.

Bad. This book is not for me

Unleashed. I just happened to stumble across this book. Mostly because I am an avid dog lover, I thought it was sweet, and tender yet suspenseful! I'll be reading the Sydney Rye series!!!!

Just couldn’t give it 5 stars.. Spoiler alert! While it was an interesting read, Joy was too impulsive, which got her brother killed. It made no sense that she could have saved her brother, but “didn’t want to be a murderer”. I would have blown the mayor away! I get it made her want revenge, but a little too late.

Believability came up short. It was entertaining, but there were many parts that fell far short of being believeable. When an animal or person is severely injured or sick they don’t get up a couple of days later and are perfectly fine again. That was just an example of how parts of the story just did not make the story good. Its too bad it looked like it would be fun. I felt at the end that I wasted my time with this one.

Unleashed. Smart dogs and their human walkers, sunken history and mysterious buildings riddled with secret passages! What’s not to like!

Great read. Fast action, well developed characters. Good action. Great start to a series.

Unleashed. A woman who thinks like a man, who is a woman. Novel concept, very entertaining, I am a fan!

Unleashed. This was an absolutely awesome read. I'm not going to try to sound all reviewish, I'm just going to say I can't wait to read the 2nd book. It was funny, witty, smart, well written, great plot and story and well rounded protagonists. No slow and plodding story lines. I know that this is supposed to be only used by the professional reviewers but I'm gonna say it anyways...."A real page turner. I couldn't put it down". I am totally a new fan!!!

unleashed. If I could give this book a rating of 0 it would deserve it in my opinion. I only read a few pages before filthy language is used. Thank goodness this trashy book was free

Surprise!. Wasn't what I thought but I did enjoy it. Mystery murder and mayhem. What's not to like. Mickey

Unleashed. One heck of a good book which started out slowly and turned into a very good one. Never read any of her books before but will continue readings from this author. Thanks for a great book. Another old grandma.

Made it to 10%. By 10% there were no interesting or likable characters, the plot episodic, and I could not find myself wasting heartbeats on this. Two stars because of its different opening.

Enjoyable!. Just the right amount of adventure, humor and emotion! Thanks.

Unleashed (A Sydney Rye Novel, #1). Really enjoyed this book. Liked the way it ended.

Next Level. Riveting, had me hooked from the start. Takes the reader through every emotion. Can't wait to read the rest in the series.

Unleashed. Got thru middle of chapter 2 & couldn't stand the low class trashy language. That told me the story had no depth, & would not be a good read, & one that I could never recommend! I have to give it one star in order to send review!

Unleashed. Fun read. Couldn’t put it down. Love the characters.

Unleashed. I started to check out this book. The book uses so many cuss words that I wouldn't waste my time reading it. Ex: 20-7.

Unleashed. Loved the first in this series. The fun of discovering this well written, fast paced mystery is wonderful!

Very enjoyable.. Love the twists, the characters. I laughed out loud and cried...not expecting that.... Never a dull moment. Looking forward to the rest of the series...

Oh my gosh. Ok so that was the best book ever I can't wait to read more in the series I rlly hope to read more📕📘📙 infinity stars

Unleashed. Interesting but a little neurotic and predictable.

Unleashed. Really enjoyed this-can’t wait to start on the next

Rubbish. Bad book to read It's boring

Unleashed. Loved this book. Will definitely have to see what other adventures she is involved in in the future!

Excellent. I have read plenty of thrillers before, some very good and some not so good. This one is up there with the best of them. I just could not put it down right up to the end I didn’t see coming. Very highly recommended.

unleashed. i really enjoyed this book it's main character reminded me of kinsey millhone the character from sue graftons a to z crime thrillers, very well written it had me surprised time and time again, i will definetley be reading more of this authors work 10 out of 10 😀

Not sure. Readable.....but confusing, likeable characters, but the story was all over the place not completely believable. Glad I didn't pay to down load it.

Unleashed. A good read. There were times where I couldn't put it down.

Wow!. Brilliant, definitely worth a read. Read from end to end, and was captivated by this character's tenacity and refusal to curl up and die, but to come out the other end a truly hardened survivor who gets the chance to reinvent herself.

good read. this was a pretty good read. I will likely looks for the next instalment.

Unleashed. Great read! Good characters, some hilarious and some very 'real!' Had a few laughs and enjoyed the suspense! Looking forward to reading more books by Emily Kimelman!

Unleashed (A Sydney Rye Mystery, #1). Loved the story! Hard to put down, well developed characters, good suspense, not cluttered with too many people....thoroughly enjoyable!

Fun read. Great Sunday afternoon read. Fun mystery, surprisingly fresh take on sexuality as well

Unleashed. A really good fun read. Not for the kids but great for us grown ups that want a protagonist that is smart, funny & ultimately capable. Loved Joy's sense of humour, her loyalty & of course, her dog. The mystery clipped along at a good pace & i was loathe to put my book down. Will be ordering book #2 I the series.

Great beach read. I really enjoyed it! Kept me guessing right till the end :)

Couldn't get through the first chapter. Writing is really average, word choice makes the pages seem like drivel, the Mary Sue Description of a dog, is painful. I knew what your dog looked like the first time. Your giant Great Dane, wolf dog with different colored eyes and also husky markings. The few pages I did read felt like a pile of cliches. Dreadful.

An excellent read. It's like reading the journal of a woman with no shame ;) A very believable character who is easy to relate to even during whacked-out scenarios. I've become a fan!

Unleashed. It was a bit too long and sometimes unreal and unbelievable. But I did read it until the end.

GofDcdfddrzrddrrSd. You don't godrfvFza

Unleashed. Emily kimelman....excellent, fast paced reading. ENJOY.....( adults, only)

Unleashed. I love Sydneys books particularly because of her relationship with and love for her dog. Not your average books.

Unleashed #1. A fab story- couldn't put it down. Great story to enjoy on quiet evenings of my vacation Hope to read 2-3-4 Fun & suspense Thanks for a great read

Unleashed. Great couldn't put it down till finished
