Silent Night by Robert B. Parker & Helen Brann Book Summary

A special gift for the holiday season—a rumination on Christmas as conceived by Robert B. Parker.

“Brann does a seamless job…Diehard Parker fans will be delighted.” —Publishers Weekly

It’s December in Boston, and Spenser is busy planning the menu for Christmas dinner when he’s confronted in his office by a young boy named Slide. Homeless and alone, Slide has found refuge with an organization named Street Business, which gives shelter and seeks job opportunities for the homeless and lost.

Slide’s mentor, Jackie Alvarez, is being threatened, and Street Business is in danger of losing its tenuous foothold in the community, turning Slide and many others like him back on the street. But it’s not a simple case of intimidation—Spenser, aided by Hawk, finds a trail that leads to a dangerous drug kingpin, whose hold on the at-risk community Street Business serves threatens not just the boys’ safety and security, but their lives as well.

Unfinished at the time of his death, Silent Night was completed by Parker’s longtime agent, whose decades-long association with Parker’s work gives her unique insight and perspective to his voice and storytelling style. Her contribution also speaks volumes about their enduring friendship.

Very disappointing.. Missed the mark. Dialogue/characters/plot felt sugar-coated and syrupy. Lacked classic Parker doses of manly, edgy, and clever. Reminded me of the horrible feeling I get when I hear a "muzak" version of a rock classic… can't wait to get out of that elevator.

Another Good Read. It's always tentative ground when one author finishes another's work, especially when it's Robert B Parker, my favorite contemporary author and a man who I feel I knew. I was eleven when my Dad gave me the Godwulf Manuscript and I've spent thirty-five years reading his books. Helen Brann has done something that I have to imagine is a difficult task by getting Spenser right. There were a few moments when I found myself asking "Would Spenser prepare a turducken?" or something similar, but it's right on for the most part. Congratulations and thank you, Helen Brann. And for fans of Spenser, this book is worth the read. It might not be the right book for a first time Parker reader, but who knows--I found out recently that some of my favorite Parker stories are the ones that other fans like the least. I enjoyed this story a lot, and I hope you will too.

Thank You and Merry Christmas. To Helen Braun wherever you may be. Thank you for this book. I miss these folks so much…this book brought a melancholy tear to my eye. Peace to all, Mike Cook Richland WA

Silent Night. never does HAWK have that much to say. It was a good run Robert Parker. Thank you.

Silent Night. This book is a terrible legacy to the memory of Robert Parker. The plot is not credible, the characters are wooden and the dialogue seems to be a cut and paste exercise from previous Spenser adventures. Aviod.

Silent Night. Thank you Helen for keeping Mr Parker's Spenser alive and well ! I think the best Spenser novels are the one's that involve Hawk in the story line and delve into their up bringing and characters. Silent Night is a well written novel and kept me wanting more. which is the point I do believe of every author to want his or her audience to come back for the next offering. Please keep Spenser coming back for more I know I will ! Mark

Silent Night Wins. Robert Parker may be gone but Spenser, Hawk, Susan et al live on Let's keep the spirit of these stories alive

Silent Night. Don't bother. It's not a RBP novel. It's a Helen Brann novel. It certainly wasn't Spenser or Hawk. Thanks for trying Ms. Brann.

Weak attempt failed. Awful. Implausible storyline. Inconsistencies in storyline. Sophomoric errors in time and place. Sad. Don't bother.

Silent Night. It must be hard for a woman to write dialog between Spencer and Hawk. A valiant effort but missed the mark mostly with Hawk. I am so glad the author tried and enjoyed the novel. The relationship between Spencer and Hawk is a complex male one and I think no woman could have done better. I have missed the banter of my two heroes and will forgive the lost nuances and suspend my disbelief and pretend the words came from Robert for my on sake. Thank you.

Silent Night. I couldn't even finish it. I'm not sure what it was, but I know it wasn't Spenser and Hawk.

Original. I believe I have read each of Robert Parker's books. This was not a disappointment. The hearts of each character remained true and yet... It's nice to know that Mr Parker was an original. My deepest sympathies to those who miss the man and those who miss the author.
