An Officer and a Spy by Robert Harris Book Summary
NATIONAL BESTSELLER
A whistle-blower. A witch hunt. A cover-up. Secret tribunals, out-of-control intelligence agencies, and government corruption. Welcome to 1890s Paris.
Alfred Dreyfus has been convicted of treason, sentenced to life imprisonment on a far-off island, and publicly stripped of his rank. Among the witnesses to his humiliation is Georges Picquart, an ambitious military officer who believes in Dreyfus's guilt as staunchly as any member of the public. But when he is promoted to head of the French counter-espionage agency, Picquart finds evidence that a spy still remains at large in the military—indicating that Dreyfus is innocent. As evidence of the most malignant deceit mounts and spirals inexorably toward the uppermost levels of government, Picquart is compelled to question not only the case against Dreyfus but also his most deeply held beliefs about his country, and about himself.

Dr.. This book takes the familiar and the historically pivotal saga of Alfred Dreyfus and turns common understanding on its head. The lines between historical novel and non fiction are drawn together in a compelling and important manner. The fate of Alfred Dreyfus was a crucial event in he fate of the Jewish people in Europe .
An Excellent History. An Officer And A Spy is the fictionalization of the role of George’s Picquart’s role in the Dreyfus affair in France around 1900. It is an excellent story that really translates to our current times with mob rule and government overreach. An excellent read with better lessons.
Spoiler Alert. The guy from May just gave too much away. Spoiled Alert
An Officer and a Spy. Great book. One can see the seeds that eventually lead to the French sending their Jews to the death camps.
An officer and a spy. So well written and captivating that I could not out it down.
Excellent read. Excellent read. Characters well developed and Harris captures the reader
Genuinely gripping history. For spy story fans and European history buffs, here is a superb combination of both.
Exceptional. A very eloquent and well written account of this sad affair. A page turner.
An Officier and a Spy. An exciting tale of a terrible injustice. It is hard to believe that innocence had such little value when compared to the honor of the French Army
A great read. A well constructed, interesting book about the Dreyfus affair from the perspective of the officer who comes to believe he is innocent. Pulls you along but still provides the history to explain and what. Though the outcome is known, the route there is well described by Harris. Well worth reading
An officer And A Spy. A page turner that held me anxious about the protagonist's survivability. Loved it.
Great book. I thoroughly enjoined reading this account of the Dreyfus affair. Extremely well researched, written, and a pleasure to read.
Excellent!. The details of the scandalous Dreyfus Affair are splendidly laid out in this page turner. Harris is to be thoroughly congratulated for his evocation of the era and attitudes.
Terrific read, important history. The Dreyfus Affair’s events mostly took place in the decade after 1894. But it has cast a very long shadow in France and in Europe, which is to say, this is not only an interesting story in its own right, but an important one historically, even today. Robert Harris’s book “An Officer and a Spy” — with its ambiguous title — is technically a novel, and Harris does invent a little bit (like giving Major Piquart a mistress). But it was scrupulously researched and in large part, it’s accurate history that reads as a novel. As a novel, it’s a page turner. The choice of Major (later Colonel) Piquart as narrator is perfect and close to inevitable, as he is, really, the central character in the scandal. Poor Dreyfus is the victim, of course, but he couldn’t have narrated his own story, as he had almost no idea what happened to him or why, at least not until it was all over. Piquart becomes head of Army intelligence after Dreyfus’s conviction and sentencing, and discovers, first, that Dreyfus’s conviction was in error, and then that it wasn’t just an error, but that he was framed, and worse, that powerful forces are working to keep the truth from ever coming out. But Piquart pursues the truth in face of all obstacles. So he really is the hero here and, as a hero, he’s truly novelistic: not a Hollywood hero in a white hat, but a real man who is frankly unenthusiastic about the job he’s been given but who, to his own disadvantage, has an old-fashioned sense of honor. I have one small quibble. The opening chapter of the book narrates the so-called “degradation” of Dreyfus, where he is stripped of his military honors, shortly before being sent off to Devil’s Island. I’m not fond of the way Harris manages this opening. The narrator (Piquart) is supposed to be reporting to his superior what happened during the ceremony; but he keeps slipping back in time to his presence at the degradation itself. It’s confusing. But after chapter one, things settle down and the rest of the book is well written and very much worth the read. I enjoyed the book and I recommend it highly.
Outstanding, compelling and unstoppable. This triumphant historical novel brilliantly unfolds the astounding events of the Dryfus affair. It is plainly that rarest of books, written with great effect taking its readers carefully through the fascinating developments of French history and the very real lives enmeshed for all time in what was and remains the singular Dryfus affair. Don't miss it!
An Officer and a Spy. Excellently told true story of The Dreyfus Affair.
Great Read. A page turner and history lesson.
For lover of history and good literature. One of the most shocking events of the end of the 19 Century narrated with great talent. What happened to Dreyfus basic human rights in a democracy show the dangers of excessive power and abuse of it. I read it almost in one seating, could not stop.
