The Monogram Murders by Sophie Hannah & Agatha Christie Book Summary

"Equal parts charming and ingenious, dark and quirky and utterly engaging. Reading The Monogram Murders was like returning to a favorite room of a long-lost home" -Gillian Flynn, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Gone Girl

Since the publication of her first novel in 1920, more than two billion copies of Agatha Christie’s books have been sold around the globe. Now, for the first time ever, the guardians of her legacy have approved a brand new novel featuring Dame Agatha’s most beloved creation, Hercule Poirot.

‘I’m a dead woman, or I shall be soon…’

Hercule Poirot's quiet supper in a London coffeehouse is interrupted when a young woman confides to him that she is about to be murdered.  She is terrified – but begs Poirot not to find and punish her killer. Once she is dead, she insists, justice will have been done.

Later that night, Poirot learns that three guests at a fashionable London Hotel have been murdered, and a cufflink has been placed in each one’s mouth. Could there be a connection with the frightened woman? While Poirot struggles to put together the bizarre pieces of the puzzle, the murderer prepares another hotel bedroom for a fourth victim...

Terrific!. Loved it! Don’t want to spoil it for anyone!

Loved it!. I think this story was well written with the usual challenges to the little grey cells.

the Monogram Murders. I can't recall ever reading a worse novel. What a waste of time and money!

Disappointing. The plotting is enjoyable enough, for a mystery, although perhaps a bit too Byzantine. The dialogue and characterization so, however, struck me as amateurish and trying too hard. The use of the first person seemed to me ill-advised, particularly as the narrator is ridiculously neurotic and repetitive. I missed the ease of Christie's style.

The Monogram Murders. This was an enjoyable read in general. I did find it a little hard to believe the Scotland Yard detective, Mr. Catchpoole, could be so dense. The explanation of the solution seemed to go on forever. However, I would definitely recommend it.

The Monogram Murders. An interesting attempt to mimic an Agatha Christie mystery. However, the real Poirot would never have led us ( the readers ) down endless paths as this author did. About half way through the story, I became weary of all the if's, and's and but's the author put us through. I am a huge Agatha Christie fan. I probably expected too much from this author.

Nice!. Quite a good effort to try to match Agatha Christie's storytelling prowess. But that's an impossibility. It deserves 5 stars just for the effort.

The monogram murders. À never ending, boring novel. Nothing to do with a real Agatha Christie's thriller

Not for me. I really should NEVER read a Hercule Poirot novel no matter how beautifully it's written, as this one is. I'm way too impatient to yawn my way through countless repeats of the same information and dealing time after time with the same characters as interesting as they might be, in every possible configuration. But that's Poirot. Nice to visit but I wouldn't like to stay very long. A lovely piece of work. But not for me.

Terrible. I thought this book would never end. To try and fill Agatha Christie's shoes is very hard, and this author has not done her even the slightest justice.....I can't even say the attempt was admirable.

The Monogram Murders. I fail to understand how this author could even think of attempting to fill in the shoes of a genius. What a miserable piece of work - first time I have thrown away a book half way through. Cufflinks in the mouth!! WOW

Great Poirot novel but it's not by Agatha Christie. I bought this thinking that it was a Poirot novel that must have missed. It was a great story but something in the writing of Poirot's companion kept throwing me off as different. I know it was not Hastings but it was a little odd. When I got to the end of the novel and the "about the author" section I was surprised to see that it was by someone else, which explained the slight style difference. I'm not sure that I would have bought this book had I known it wasn't written by Agatha Christie but I did enjoy it.

Extremely boring!. If you're hoping for an interesting new mystery involving Hercule Poirot, you'll be extremely disappointed. This novel should not be associated with Agatha Christie or her famous Belgian detective. It works for falling asleep though, bores you to death! Not worth buying.

Has she read the Agatha Christie books?. Perhaps most disappointing about this book is that the author has painted Hercule Poirot to be a mean, overly emotional person. One of the endearing qualities of Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot is that he is always kind and calm. It read to me like the only thing the author kept from the original was the green eyes gleaming when he had an idea. Also, Hercule Poirot loved hot chocolate. Why the sudden odd and overwhelming obsession with coffee? Lots of fluff, not a lot of substance. Catchpool is a boring and inept sidekick, who doesn’t add much to the story. I would pass on this book if I were you.

Enjoyable. I enjoyed this and will read the next. I’m happy to have more stories and be entertained. If your motive is entertainment and not judgement give this a try!

Monogram Murders. Disappointing! Story has too many twists and turns to be worthy of Agatha Christie's literary legacy. Use of anachronistic phraseology offends. Word use such as 'weird' is completely unacceptable. Rather frequent use of Poirot's frenchisms throughout does nothing to enhance authenticity.

Enjoyable. I have read all Hercule Poirot books. This one fits in well. Lots of twists, possible too many but still enjoyable. You have a hard act to follow Sophie, but you are off to a good start.

Thoroughly enjoyed it!. I was skeptical at first as with most people when I heard that Hercule Poirot was being brought back to life. But as I started to read the novel I found myself forgetting that it wasn't even written by Agatha Christie! Sophie Hannah did a tremendous job in capturing the Belgian detective's qualities and quirks. When the mystery was being revealed towards the end I found myself at the edge of my seat just as I was when I first read The Mysterious Affair at Styles and even Curtain.
