The Way, My Way by Bill Bennett Book Summary

“I’d never done anything crazy like this before – a pilgrimage walk. I was not a hiker, and I wasn’t a Catholic. In fact, I wasn’t even sure I was a Christian. On the last government census when I had to state my religion, I’d said I was a Buddhist, mainly because they’ve had such a hard time in Tibet and I felt they needed my statistical support.

I was also not an adventure traveler. For me, adventure travel was flying coach. All this backpacking and wearing of heavy boots and flying off to France to walk ancient pilgrimage routes was a new experience, and not one that made me feel entirely comfortable.”

And so Bill Bennett, an Australian based film director, set off on an 800 kilometer walk across Spain to Santiago de Compostela, not sure why he was doing it, and not feeling entirely comfortable. His discomfort increased markedly a few days later when his knee gave out – so the rest of the walk was a “pain management pilgrimage.”

But he kept his sense of humor, and in the vein of Bill Bryson's and Eric Newby's travel memoirs, The Way, My Way takes you on a unique spiritual journey that's both deeply moving, and laugh-out-loud funny.

Delightful. The book grabbed me right away. I read it in 5 days when it normally takes me months to finish a book. I will take Bill's experiences and use them on my trek. Thank you for your funny, brave and wonderful words!

The Way, My Way. After reading over twenty books about the Camino de Santiago, it is hard to impress me, but I am impressed. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Way, My Way! The story flows well, and is believable all the way through. I did not want it to end. I stopped 10 pages before the end three days ago, and could not continue until this morning. I am so glad that I did. Bill's willingness to share his feelings, failures, as well as his successes, gives us an intimate look into a very personal experience. If you are considering making this pilgrimage, you must read this book. My own Camino is not until 2015, maybe someone would share a cab from Biarritz.

The Way, My Way. Have just finished reading The Way, My Way and loved every word of it! I've read countless accounts of others who have completed the Camino, including many celebrated authors, but nothing compares to the brilliance of Bill's writing. I couldn't put it down, great wit, great storytelling, refreshingly honest and a brilliant turn of phrase. And in the last chapter I was shamelessly wiping away tears, cheering Bill on as he "eventually" made his way into Santiago. If considering walking the Camino this is a must read, if considering an uplifting, honest and inspiring read, this is a must book!

The one book on the Camino you HAVE to read. A WARNING: if you start reading this book, you can't put it down until you've finished it. I certainly could not and I've read many, many books on the Camino written by people from many countries with very varied stories to tell about their Camino journey. Bill Bennett's The Way, My Way is funny, witty, profound and very moorish. He is astonishingly open about his journey, both emotionally and physically; you very clearly feel his pain ripping out that toe nail and gag at the thought of that blister! Also, as a photographer Bill's photos accompanying his story are compelling and as insightful as his words. I sincerely hope Bill keeps travelling other Camino routes and writing his stories for us to be enthralled again.

The Camino de Santiago: Laughter and Wisdom. Bill Bennett brings the eye of a film maker to this book about his Camino. With his self-deprecating humour and keen perception, he reminds me of Bill Bryson. But this is also a very personal journey as Mr Bennett battles physical and emotional dramas to finish both his journey and an almost spiritual quest. Along the way, we see Mr Bennett's view of the world and himself, and suffer and rejoice his setbacks and triumphs. Ultimately uplifting, this is a wonderful account, sometimes laugh out loud funny, sometimes deeply personal, but always engaging.

Loved it. Well written, funny, moving. Unlike this review.

Real life Camino. Having followed Bill Bennett's blog before walking my own Camino, I was keen to read his book. Two weeks after returning to Australia from Spain I finally got time to read it- loved it! Only took a few days to read as I could not put it down. Was a true life experience that brought back so many memories as I could relate too, the people, places and experiences. I think having just walked the Camino I could relate to his experience, so if you have walked the Camino relive it in this book. If you are thinking of walking the Camino it will give you real life insight into the journey. And if you just love a great read it will inspire you. Thanks Bill

A must read!. This book is a must read for anyone who has, or is considering walking the Camino Frances in Spain. In fact it's a must read for anyone who enjoys an uplifting and moving story told in an entertaining and engaging way. Bill Bennett's book is more than just a memoir of his experience walking an ancient pilgrimage route in today's Spain. It is a brutally honest, witty and thought provoking story of one mans journey on The Way. Inspiring in every sense, it is a wonderful read and should be compulsory reading not only for all pilgrims past and future, but for anyone who loves a tale of inspiration for today.

The Way, My Way. I came across The Way, My Way while researching walking the Camino. Bill Bennett paints his own picture of the Camino de Santiago. He used something he calls his PGS, his personal guidance system, to guide him along the way. Sometimes it worked, occasionally it failed, but Bill gives a wonderful account of his journey. At times hilarious and at others informative, but always honest and from the heart, it is a terrific book. I highly recommend reading it if you are planning your own Camino. Peter Fanning

The Way, My Way. In a word....brilliant! In a few more words....funny, insightful, tear instigator...and did I say funny? A 'from the heart' account of one person's experience of the Camino de Santiago :)

The Way My Way. Great book Bill. My wife and I walked the Camino in 2013 about 2 weeks behind you and your writing has brought back so many great memories that we are now planning to walk the Camino Portuguese. Thank you.

Fantastic Book. One day I will walk the Camino, until then I will live vicariously through those that have by reading their personal journeys. I've read many books on the Camino and this one now stands out as my favourite. Bill's style of writing is engaging, humorous, self depreciating and always heart warming. I laughed, I cried, I worried about Bill and by the end I wanted to walk it even more - and give Bill a hug. Thanks for sharing your journey with us all Bill.
