Face the Music by Paul Stanley Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES and INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER

In Face the Music, Paul Stanley—the co-founder and famous “Starchild” frontman of KISS—reveals for the first time the incredible highs and equally incredible lows in his life both inside and outside the band. Face the Music is the shocking, funny, smart, inspirational story of one of rock’s most enduring icons and the group he helped create, define, and immortalize.

Stanley mixes compelling personal revelations and gripping, gritty war stories that will surprise even the most steadfast member of the KISS Army. He takes us back to his childhood in the 1950s and ’60s, a traumatic time made more painful thanks to a physical deformity. Born with a condition called microtia, he grew up partially deaf, with only one ear. But this instilled in him an inner drive to succeed in the most unlikely of pursuits: music.

With never-before-seen photos and images throughout, Stanley’s memoir is a fully realized and unflinching portrait of a rock star, a chronicle of the stories behind the famous anthems, the many brawls and betrayals, and all the drama and pyrotechnics on and off the stage. Raw and confessional, Stanley offers candid insights into his personal relationships, and the turbulent dynamics with his bandmates over the past four decades. And no one comes out unscathed—including Stanley himself.

“People say I was brave to write such a revealing book, but I wrote it because I needed to personally reflect on my own life. I know everyone will see themselves somewhere in this book, and where my story might take them is why I’m sharing it.” —Paul Stanley

The Man Behind the Mask. Fans of KISS looking for a diss on current and former band members will get their fill here—even Gene is not spared. The book offers so much more. He tells the story about overcoming the obstacles of depression and birth defects to gain the adulation of millions—and yet STILL turn up empty inside. Finding true happiness by contributing to others..”live to win,” indeed. I loved the book..the best in the lot of books written by the original members. Extremely satisfying.

Great book. Best KISS book yet.

Paul never disappoints. Paul Stanley proves he is what I believed he was and is. A great rocker, person, and now a Friend from far away. Your book was a true joy and inspiration to read. Thanks Paul! I hope to see you soon in another amazing KISS show.

Outstanding Book! Couldn't Put it down!. Paul lays it all out there in this one. No one is spared in this "tell it like it is" autobiography. I'll admit to being a lifelong fan so coming into it I was a bit "homer". However, Paul opened my eyes and told a story that was much different than anything I had imagined. I was blown away by his honesty. I've always thought of Paul as the most reasonable member of the band. I see KISS in a different light now and I appreciate even more Paul's contributions. Not only is it a piercingly honest book - it is very cell written. I recommend this to anyone that wants to know what it was truly like starting a band from scratch and then persevering to the too. Best book I've read in a long time!

Paul Stanley - Rock Icon. Having read almost every KISS book including the other three biographies, Paul's book is most in line with what us true hard KISS fans seen. Paul is and always has been the driving force behind KISS whether its song writing, vision or production. Paul kept this band going at a time most bands would have called it quits. I’m thankful for the original band and for every member who kept it going until this point. Thank you Paul for giving us die-hard fans a unbelievable ride over the past 40 years.

Face the Music - required reading for Kiss fans. I'm not an avid reader but have read the books of all the original members of Kiss. If you want the true stories, unadulterated by self-love or half-baked memories, this is the book to read. As a Kiss fan from the beginning, I assumed I knew it all... I was mistaken. This book is a real eye opener! Extremely revealing stories from Mr. Stanley's youth were just the tip of the iceberg that is his life! Personal stories, road-life stories, stories of all members of Kiss - it's all in there! You'll find no apologies in this book and you shouldn't! Paul did everything he did to make it to the happiest of places! Read the book, you'll understand!

Face the Music. Loved reading Paul's story. He is a team player and hard worker. Now KISS is doing better than ever.

Surprising. I should say "surprisingly great" I loved this book. I did not grab this book on day one like many Kiss fans and when I did purchase it, I thought that it would be the typical rock and roll bio. I soon found out differently as I got quickly got caught up in the telling of Paul's story. It was fascinating hearing things from Paul's perspective as we cruised through the history of Kiss. Thank you for a great read!

The Man, The Myth, The Legend. I have been a fan of KISS from the very beginning. Like most original fans, I lost a lot of my interest after Peter, then Ace left, and when they seems to lose their way visually, musically and as a band. I still listened, bought the records (some regretfully) and from time to time saw the shows. I had, like most hardcore fans, formed opinions on many of the decisions that Gene and Paul made throughout the years. Not all of the opinions being very good. After reading this book I now feel that, not only do I know Paul on an almost personal level, I understand the obstacles and challenges he went through to keep himself and the band together. At the very least, I have a better understanding and appreciation for his character. If you have any question as to what happened in Paul's life, in the band and why certain decisions were made, you'll find your answers here. It is my opinion and belief that had it not been for Paul Stanley, KISS would no longer be the force that they are today or possibly not even exist at all. Best book of any of the KISS band members.

Star Child becomes A Man!. This book helped me teach my tenage son about what helped me through some youthful indiscresions.KISS was a marvel to grow up with! To see the band grow and change was a pleasure. I hope for Peter and ACE the same level of enlightenment that Pauls has found! Great family Paul, you did good! Proud of you!

KISS. I am getting my book no I love it.

Forgiving Of Imperfection?. While an original Kiss fan… if Paul Stanley's words and actions would match I would find this book to be a bit more plausible.. but based on the way he and Gene have treated Peter and Ace, the idea for Paul to be forgiving an kind and other concepts in this book make it a real fairytale… to bad

4 sides to every story. Before reading this book I read a few other KISS books so reading Paul's take on the history does give you a perspective from his view. His upbringing and the relationship between the band members is interesting and explains many of the decisions made in regards to band members, fashion choices and direction. Good read have fun.

Loved it. I grew up listening to the band and still enjoy their music and I was completely drawn in by Paul's writing and storytelling. Hated to get to the last page.

A rare glimpse into the most secretive Kiss member. A refreshingly honest and inspirational read from Kiss cofounder Paul Stanley. His personal thoughts and feelings opened up new insights into the man behind the starchild persona to reveal a real life human being living in the surreal world of Kiss. Wow couldn't put it down. Newfound respect for the Kiss member most of us never really knew. Way to go Paul!

RIVETING READ , 5 stars ⭐️. KISS lost me after Destroyer , Love Gun was pretty good . Paul's book is GREAT though, and renewed my interest in Kiss , I'm checking out the back catalogue on i tunes now.

Wonderful book, Paul. A must-read for any member of the KISS Army.

Paul Stanley the king front man. I'm sooo excited to read this. Paul Stanley is my idol!!! Thank you Paul for writhing this book.

Brutally Honest Insight!!. I've written a few reviews but this one excited me to write. I've followed KISS since 1980, a loyal Army-member. I'm also honest enough to say that their last couple of albums have been somewhat subpar, imho. With that said.....this book was absolutely captivating! The peek into the inner circle was presented in such a way that it took the familiar, balled it up, took the same headline but only this time added the REAL story. I really 'thought' I knew about KISS...however, it is quite apparent, I did not. Ironically, I probably know more about KISS than Peter or Ace do in 2014. Sad...for them but they did this to themselves. This book, at no point, allows itself to let up. It reveals heartbreak and the sadness through the eyes of a rock n roll superstar. But when he Stanley talks so affectionately about God, his children, and his wife...the book becomes extraordinary! Loved it!!

I Can't Help But Feel A Bit Let Down. I have been waiting so long for this book. I finished it just moments ago and feel let down. There is so much that was ignored, felt rushed or purposely omitted. Why do artist of the day dismiss the 80's as much as they do? There was so much more about that decade that could have been revealed, but not. I don't know... I feel there is a lot missing from this book.

The Best!!!. This is, by far, the best rock and roll autobiography I have ever read, and I have read them all!!! I have never been inspired by a rock tale until now. Paul has been a hero of mine since I was a little kid, and I'm thankful I picked such a good one. Thanks Paul; you are awesome!!!

I give it a 10. What a great book about hard work and constant improvement. I grew up loving Kiss and my first concert was 1977 Chicago. My son 1st concert Kiss in Dallas 7-8 years ago. I bought the book because of my interest in Kiss, but Paul’s story is like every great successful person. He overcame many obstacles, had a burning desire to succeed, then went to work. Paul as an author I realize how challenging it is to write a book, thank you for making the time to do it!

Raw Honesty and Inspiring Endurance. Paul's account is life in and out of kiss is both inspiring and enlightening. Is no holds barred account of his interaction with those in his worklife and personal life is refreshing. In a world where no one wants to admit their mistakes or failures Pauls story is an inspiration. Early in the book he passes on two words to live by; raw honesty. Some people are afraid to say what is true, out of fear or retaliation; or simple romanticism of what they have actually done to others. Paul is not that person. All of the encounters that Paul shares lead to his contentment and finding of himself in the place where he is now. He has become a true believer in love of family and love of oneself. even if you are not a KISS fan, you will find inspiration and encouragement in Paul's journey. Excellent read.

Truly Inspirational. If you are a KISS fan, or even just a fan of rock and roll, I highly recommend that you give this book a read. Stanley reveals everything, and made it clear that it wasn't always easy. From his honesty and inspiration to how he is now in a happy family of his own, you hear it all.

Awesome!!!. A great read!!!

Top Notch Rock and Roll Autobiography. "Rock Star" Paul Stanley opens up and tells all the relevant details of his life going back to early childhood. I applaud his courage for being willing to tell the world about his screwed up family and his deformed right ear as well as being brutally candid about his relationship with the other members of KISS. So now my heart goes out to him not just for having to live with the pathological egomania of Gene Simmons who by the way, all but ruined kiss for me with his relentless narcissism. The only significant fault I find with the book is, Paul claims that in 1974 he visited Memphis, TN and drove by Graceland, finding it so unimpressive that he decided not to take the tour. Problem? Elvis did not die until 1977 and Graceland wasn't open to tours until about 1982.

Everybody's got a reason to live.... Fascinating insight into the shallow and frankly dangerous pursuit of fame and fortune. Wonderful to see how ultimately true happiness has little to do with either of those impostors. Intelligent, thought provoking, and honestly written, and an inspiring underlying message for aspiring rock stars, KISS fans, and humanity! Cheers Paul!:)

A Great Read. I really enjoyed this book. It's a warts and all account of his life. Very entertaining. The reader feels that they know Paul Stanley intimately. The real person behind the make up.

Never stops impressing me!. I thought it was full of inspiration and tales of hard work and focus paving the way for one of rocks greatest front men!

Great book. This was a book I will remember. I'v been a fan of Kiss and Paul Stanley, his story and incouraging words have me looking and facing life in more positive way now to do and see things.

Inspiring!. I read pretty much every bio from our favorite rock stars. Some are good, some better. Some incredible like Nikki Sixx's. This one is different. I will never see Paul the same way again. He really seems to enjoy life. And you see it's not the money or material stuff that drives him. He loves what he does and is a family guy that happens to be a rock icon. A must read for everyone.

Paul Stanley. Excellent book, wasn't a big fan in the past, but reading this book has inspired me to be a fan who appreciates a great rock and roll band like KISS and how great of a man Paul Stanley really is and always will be. Thank You Paul Stanley for writing this book, it's very inspiration for anyone to read.
