Essentialism by Greg Mckeown Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • More than one million copies sold! Essentialism isn’t about getting more done in less time. It’s about getting only the right things done.

“A timely, essential read for anyone who feels overcommitted, overloaded, or overworked.”—Adam Grant

Have you ever:
• found yourself stretched too thin?
• simultaneously felt overworked and underutilized?
• felt busy but not productive?
• felt like your time is constantly being hijacked by other people’s agendas?

If you answered yes to any of these, the way out is the Way of the Essentialist.

Essentialism is more than a time-management strategy or a productivity technique. It is a systematic discipline for discerning what is absolutely essential, then eliminating everything that is not, so we can make the highest possible contribution toward the things that really matter.

By forcing us to apply more selective criteria for what is Essential, the disciplined pursuit of less empowers us to reclaim control of our own choices about where to spend our precious time and energy—instead of giving others the implicit permission to choose for us.

Essentialism is not one more thing—it’s a whole new way of doing everything. It’s about doing less, but better, in every area of our lives. Essentialism is a movement whose time has come.

Life-changing. This book really was life-changing in clarifying how to determine what's truly important to focus on and cut through the clutter. My new favorite resource for aligning with my key core value, simplicity.

Practical yet enjoyable. This book provides very practical advice for how how to reduce the clutter in your life to maximize the returns of everything absolutely love it and it will definitely be a staple in my library.

What a great read!!. I am a 29 year old young professional and I truly left like that things were getting out of hand in all aspects of my life. I prayed about it and the next day, this book was featured in a podcast that I was listening to. This was an answered prayer for me. This book has changed my life. From the way that we make decisions or don't, to the way we prioritize, this book will really help you make changes in your life to live with purpose in all areas. It will be tough to apply some of the principles, as you are unlearning some cultural, personal, and emotional habits, but it works. Great read!

Definitely Applies To My Life As a Teenager. The book “Essentialism” by Greg McKeown presents a convincing argument for his solution to a problem that applies to me as a teenager. I really enjoyed it. First of all, it was easy to understand. It used language I could easily process, something uncommon in academic books. It also had a clear outline that made sense and centered on the main idea. McKeown did this by separating the book into steps and sub-steps of becoming an Essentialist. The evidence provided was also super convincing. He used powerful statistics to back up his argument and really made me want to take his advice. Further, McKeown included many convincing and relatable examples of people who practice Essentialism. The book is a bit long, but these stories keep it interesting and make it all worthwhile because they also make it easier to understand the concepts he is describing. Essentially, I would recommend “Essentialism” to other teenagers if they feel overstressed and busy.

Insightful. This book was though provoking and inspirational. An easy read.

Life Changing. I'm only 1/3 of the way into this book, and already I have a different outlook on life. If you feel that you are overwhelmed with your work and personal responsibilities and commitments, I highly recommend you read this book.

Eye Opening!. Greg Mckeown simplifies life’s decisions and choices with one question - “What is essential?”. This book is a must read for anyone who is looking to take back control of their lives from distractions and non-essential noise that keep us from achieving our ultimate goals. I highly recommend!

Great Read. Very thought provoking and causes you to think about your daily life structure.

Thank you. Thank you.

Keep it simple, silly. While it’s easy to say things like that, it’s often more difficult to put into practice beyond conceptualizing simplicity. I’ve enjoyed reading Greg’s book as it has helped me to reframe my thinking. I am not good enough at essentialism yet to consider myself an essentialist through and through, but I do feel the impact the book has had in the way I think of the things I do, say, and agree to do.

Love this book. Can't say enough positive things about this book. Great insights for business and everyday personal and family life. Highly recommended read!

Excellent. I am going back over Essentialism and purchased (half-way through) Effortless. Two great books, to master Essentialism is a process, but it’s worth it and McKeown writes with sincerity and care.

Life Changing Book. I'm so sad that I have finished reading this book of Essentualism. It hit me hard and I wished I had read it in my 20s instead of my 50s. As a minimalist, I am constantly seeking life affirming messages that I am not the right track. This book not only proved to me that I was on the right track but helped me focus on which track to be on. I can't recommend this book enough!

So Good. I admire, respect and even envy the author for dedicating his life to the Essential. This book moved me much further on my journey.

Incredible!. This book gets to the heart of a lot of self inflicted issues such as stress, chronic sleep issues, and more. It’s not a checklist but instead an operating system. Thank you for writing this!
