Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng Book Summary

The acclaimed debut novel by the author of Little Fires Everywhere and Our Missing Hearts

“A taut tale of ever deepening and quickening suspense.” —O, the Oprah Magazine

“Explosive . . . Both a propulsive mystery and a profound examination of a mixed-race family.” —Entertainment Weekly

“Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet.” So begins this exquisite novel about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee, and her parents are determined that she will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue. But when Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together is destroyed, tumbling them into chaos. A profoundly moving story of family, secrets, and longing, Everything I Never Told You is both a gripping page-turner and a sensitive family portrait, uncovering the ways in which mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and husbands and wives struggle, all their lives, to understand one another.

Such an amazing book. Very deep, very interesting. Couldn’t put down

amazing!!. I truly loved this book. It's an easy read, yet provides a ton to think about and process. I couldn't put it down, and I didn't want to! Can't wait to read another of her books.

Predictable. This book joins the growing list of modern day titles which extract the saddest parts of life and splay it in the pages with no redemption. Pedestrian, predictable and hopeless.

Couldn’t put it down. I read this book in about a week. Such great characters, you feel like you know them.

Brilliantly Structured. This book is brilliantly structured and is a great read on several levels. It is much more than solving the question of how Lydia died. The story of being different, or of wanting to be different, or wanting to fit in, is a universal story that transends time, place, generations, and is played out all too tragically in schools, streets, and neighborhoods today. A close read of Ng’s detail and emotionally packed book is in order. As much as it is a page-turner, it is a great lesson, too.

Fantastic. I just finished reading this book. Truly, one of the best books that I have ever read. Such character development- you really come to know them. Their emotional ups and downs, the twists and turns of the plot..an unbelievable read.

Entertaining. I finished this book even though I didn’t love it. It was ok, not great, like “Little Fires.”

The things I never told you. A page turner! An excellent read! The characters were finely drawn. So well was the story told that it haunted me for days

I give it a B. Not the best but not the worst. Interesting, subtle, yet none of the characters are particularly likeable. Yep, I'm giving a b, maybe a b-

Ok. Pretty good but lacked a ton of substance in the end

So Good!. Loved this book so much Written very well.

Great!. Loved the characters, the content, the story. Felt each character’s feelings. I will read every book she puts out. I am a fan!

Not was i was expecting. Really good if you like family oriented books. Thought it would be more murder-mystery like. Took me a while to get through because it’s not my usual thing haha.

Things I Never Told You. Poignant and captivating; beautifully written.

AMAZING. This book I got from my neighbor and it was amazing I could not put it down! Such a amazing plot and great storyline!

Everything I Never Told You Review. A tender gripping novel which was impossible to put down. The reader gets an acute intimate understanding of each character that will remain with them long after they have finished last chapter. I didn't want it to end. Thank you for giving me such a gift. Becky

Everything I Never Told You. A great read... It really depicts the effects of mixed marriages and the challenges we face. It doesn't matter what the mix is there is some adjustments....

Absolutely brilliant.. 10/10 would recommend. I finished it this morning and I am quite sad that it's over. Such a good read.

Everything I never told you. There are times when the first few words of a novel take you to a place where you know that not only will you enjoy the time away in another persons world, but that you will learn something powerful along the way. How difficult it must be for our children to wrestle with their parents expectations while trying to put on their own wings and learn to fly. And how much our own parents expectations reflect in our lives. I am sad for all of the Lydia's and Jack's who feel that they have to struggle to rise above the demons of their previous generations and not drown in the process.

A victim’s paradise. If you’re looking for a woeful story of victimhood, this book is for you.

Beautifully written, heartbreaking & redemptive. A masterful story of the many ways and reasons we experience being "different", what we feel and tell ourselves about that experience and what we withhold from others about it & why. And, of course, about the ignorance, fear and, at times, cruelty with which the "majority" responds to the minority who are different than them.

Lol. Man Man these MOFOS CRAZy!

Read it.. It's about Tiger moms, and parents wanting the best for their kids, and the bias in society, and the dynamics of a family, in this instance, an Asian-American family. It resonated so much in me because it felt real, a plot that could happen in real life. I hope they make this into a movie.. Looking forward to another great novel from Ms. Ng..

Completely Engrossing. The Lee’s world was completely engrossing. Beautiful written and I think a great depiction of the feelings of those who lose someone they love unexpectedly in a way they cannot understand or explain.

This is one of those books that changes your life. I love books like this, about family dynamics. How children are raised in the same home by the same two people, but they are never the same. And their memories, they are never the same. This book takes you on an adventure into a family that may seem fine from the outside, but you learn that everything is not as it seems. I love this author’s writing, making you see everything about the characters. Relating, but also mildly cringing at the choices they make and the lives they live and the way they speak to one another. Enjoyed it and read it in one sitting. Couldn’t put it down. I’ve read her other novel, I feel it has too many words, I hope that makes sense. It has too much going on and doesn’t follow through with several storylines that still had my attention. This one however resolves everything with a nice black ribbon, not pink. Certainly worth your time and your money. I love it!

The are redeeee. Edhr red went years ago Edda

Beautiful writing immerses the reader. Character's emotions are drawn with complexity, sincere and well done.

Everything I Never Told You. Great read……it comes across anyone who is relocates or grows up in a different culture. We think things have progressed with time but has it??? Look at what is happening in the world around us…...

In the Middle. I rated this a three star for various reasons. One mainly being that half the time it went back and forth between the past and the present and it was confusing at times. Also, there was never a huge break in the plot where you were on your seat wanting to know what happened. Yes, the whole book you want to find out what happened to Lydia but nothing absolutely crazy happens. I enjoyed this for a quick read but I definitely wouldn't consider it a favorite.

Drags.. This book drags on and on, going back in the past and coming back. I didn't even feel there was an exciting climax to where I just couldn't put down the book. Not impressed

No surprises here. The book was a pretty easy, quick read. The ending was largely predictable from the beginning of the book. The story line and the dialogue felt very cliche at times. The author's style of writing was also very descriptive, so much so that it was honestly difficult to get through paragraphs at any given time and the writing felt forced in places. For anyone that likes a story painting a portrait of a family with movies-esque drama, this is your read. But otherwise, I'd look into another.

Perfection. Beautiful. Powerful. Wonderfully written.

Interesting story. Just a bummer how many characters didn’t seem fully developed

Kept my interest. I really enjoyed this book, even though it was painful To read in some parts. Very well written .The characters are dimensional.

Everything I never told you. One of the best books I've read in awhile. She allowed you to understand each character, to get in each of their heads and feel how they got to this point in their lives. Read it all in one day!!

No.. The author is a great writer, but this book just drags and drags through characterization. I gave it two stars because the author is a good writer, but in truth, I'll forget about this book by tomorrow. The sample is misleading. The sample is the most exciting part of the book, unfortunately.

Amazing!. It's the 1970s, and James and Marilyn Lee live in middle America. James, a Chinese American, and his Anglo wife have three children: Nathan, who is the oldest, Lydia, and Hannah. Their world revolves around their sixteen-year-old daughter, Lydia, who, unknown to them, is dead. Once they discover this fact, this extrodinarily human and touching novel unfolds before the reader like an exotic flower covering themes of family, loss, parent expectations, and race. Ng writes with the skill and precision of a laser so that there's not an extraneous word or thought. Her portrait of the Lees and their inability to fully understand themselves as seen through each other's eyes is nothing short of genius. Heartbreaking and real, this story will linger in the reader's mind long after the final page. Highly Recommened.

Kept me guessing. Teenagers can hide so much from family. Interesting plot.

Everything I never told you. To detailed oriented had to skip read

Pretty Depressing. The book could use some lighter moments. It felt like a caricature.

Good--. All the Thing I Never Said is a good book. The story line is interesting but it is quite wordy. The author could have eliminated 20 words per page and still gotten her point across.

Moving read!. A quick but beautiful and moving story of the dynamics of a family. Loved it!

Great read!. Couldn’t put it down!

It was an okay book!. It had good character development but the plot line was a little bland. It was highly recommended by one my favorite authors who ended up making a tv show into it. As well as on goods reads but I didn’t live up to expectations for me. Ever go up a really steep hill then it’s flat for a little then you drive slowly to avoid going too fast? That is how this books plot felt.

oh my god !!. One of the best thrillers I have ever read… So many twists and turns… Did not see the ending coming… Definitely a must read

The things I wish they would’ve told me. This is one of the worst books I have ever read. It was very difficult to get through and EXTREMELY anticlimactic.
