Tower Lord by Anthony Ryan Book Summary

In Blood Song, Anthony Ryan introduced readers to “a fascinating world of conflicting religions and the wars fought in the name of those faiths” (Library Journal). Now Ryan’s epic tale continues as Vaelin Al Sorna discovers that there is no escape from the call of destiny…

“The blood-song rose with an unexpected tune, a warm hum mingling recognition with an impression of safety. He had a sense it was welcoming him home.”

Vaelin Al Sorna, warrior of the Sixth Order, called Darkblade, called Hope Killer. The greatest warrior of his day, and witness to the greatest defeat of his nation: King Janus’s vision of a Greater Unified Realm drowned in the blood of brave men fighting for a cause Vaelin alone knows was forged from a lie. Sick at heart, he comes home, determined to kill no more. Named Tower Lord of the Northern Reaches by King Janus’s grateful heir, he can perhaps find peace in a colder, more remote land far from the intrigues of a troubled Realm.

But those gifted with the blood-song are never destined to live a quiet life. Many died in King Janus’s wars, but many survived, and Vaelin is a target, not just for those seeking revenge but for those who know what he can do. The Faith has been sundered, and many have no doubt who their leader should be. The new King is weak, but his sister is strong. The blood-song is powerful, rich in warning and guidance in times of trouble, but is only a fraction of the power available to others who understand more of its mysteries. Something moves against the Realm, something that commands mighty forces, and Vaelin will find to his great regret that when faced with annihilation, even the most reluctant hand must eventually draw a sword.

Amazing!. Contrary to some reviews, this book was equally if not better than the first. I could not put it down and can’t wait to read the third and final in series. You will not be disappointed!

Fantastic. Another well written book in a continually fantastic series.

Awesome sauce!. The first book was great, but this... this is amazing.

Well written, exciting new author. I stumbled upon Blood Song and could not put it down once I started reading. The story and characters brought to life a familiar storyline -- holy warrior who questions his faith. As soon as I finished book one, I immediately purchased and downloaded Tower Lord anticipating the storyline to continue. I was disappointed by the change of writing style in the second book. Although still well written, I found myself left wanting it to be more focused and less fragmented across the character story lines. The conclusion was also not as well done as the first book -- which actually tied everything together -- book two did not accomplish that at all. I still recommend you get to know the author and read the series. I will definitely read Blood Song again and look forward to book three when it is released.

Another bloody epic saga. I couldn't wait to finish this book and am relieved to have done so. It's hard to find a truly great adventure novel and this is not it. Though the character and plot development were well realized, the book is fragmented into so many sub plots with so many minor characters it was difficult to keep track of exactly what was happening in any particular chapter. Also the lack of establishing vignettes and a proper graphic or map gives the reader little to relate to when it comes to remembering multiple story lines and myriad characters with unfamiliar but somewhat similar names. The writing is good but the whole adds up to an expertly prepared meal with too many courses and far too many ingredients. The main flaw, however was that fully a quarter of the book was unrelieved descriptions of killings and slaughter. I suppose that lovers of this genre expect and enjoy this kind of thing but in real life, even if the reader is a combat veteran I should think the sheer volume of carnage would be more than a little disturbing. Needless to say, I will not be reading more by this author.

Great Read. This second installment has more of the same great characters, plot development and pace. Can't wait for the third book...

Amazing writing!. This series is unbelievable and so unique! I absolutely love it and Vaelin has my whole heart, I recommend these books to anyone that will listen! ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM!

I hope you have free time. Just as with the first novel in this series, I found that once I sat down to read time became relative. I’d swear I’d have been sitting for a few moments but the clock told me it was hours. More than once I intended to read “for a bit” before sleeping, but then my alarm would go off and I’d realize it was going to be a long day at work, haha. In short, it’s very good. The characters are perfect and almost all have some aspect you can relate to or sympathize with.

What happened?. The first book had me at the edge of my seat for most of the time; I had a very difficult time putting it down. Yet, with this book I’m very disappointed. This book doubles the amount of perspectives than the first. This was neat to some degree but it got old fast. It was so incredibly slow during the first half, then it started to get slightly better. SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD: A big problem I had with this book was how different Vaelin was. Before, we had a person very serious and reserved that is completely different. Now Vaelin is a person with newly acquired “powers” thats has transformed into some family guy with all the showings of a person stricken with false modesty. I also hated Reva. I’m supposed to believe that a couple weeks worth of training with Vaelin has made her into an elite soldier rivaling those from the sixth order?? Give me a break. Honestly, I feel like the author wanted to be woke and show that women can be warriors too. Not saying that’s a bad thing, it just felt forced. At the end of the day, I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first one. I will not continue with the series anymore.

Too Slow and doesn’t make you care. The book is honestly pretty boring. There aren’t any overly likeable characters and the plot moves kinda slow. All scenes are written like filler scenes for the most part as if they are just waiting to get to a more important scene but they never seem to. Idk could just be personal preference but I’ve read a good amount of medieval books and this isn’t one of my favorites by a long shot.

Where have you been Anthony Ryan when I languished to find a superb read?. A most excellent example of fiction I've read in some time. Stunning in scope, rich in detail, exquisite in suspense! I anticipate great things to come!!

A++. Just down right amazing. The book from start to finish , is great. And no where in the book is there a character or side story I felt I wanted to skip or over look. It is hands down a great book with a storyline that keeps you wanting more. Can't wait until the 3rd book is released.

Wonderful! ... Get the book (info on the missing star inside). I loved the book, the story telling and the characters... This is a book I heartily recommend. The "Raven's Shadow" books are fascinating and well told. As expected, and beautifully done, the main story-arch of the book is only partially complete, which now makes me wait restlessly for the next installment. Having said that, allow me to explain why I gave the book a four star rating and the reason for the missing star... (And the missing star?) I believe that making the chapters a bit shorter would have created a better reading experience - as so many of us watch tv where the different story-arches, for the different characters, are told while constantly switching between the different story arches. Also, I felt that Vealin's character and personal evolution was rather under-developed. I found that some of his inner conflicts were only hinted upon after their resolution and that I, as a reader, was not intimate with his inner world and challenges. For me, this was a rather great disappointment, as Vealin was the main character in the first book and he is (together with few others) the main character in this installment as well. Having said that, get the book - it's great :)
