Children to a Degree. I lived in Germany from 1985 to 1987, my father fought in WWII, my husband lived in Germany for 8 years, and my father-in-law flew in the Berlin Airlift. This book explained so many nuances of German daily life during the war. I have a better understanding of many of the engrained social customs and beliefs of today. The image of the frog in a sauce pan as the heat is gradually turned up came to mind. Easy reading. Well written.

Children to a Degree. I read these books to better understand the mindset of the German people before the war and during ww2. He gives great Insite to that question.

The power of intimidation. This book was very interesting depicting life in Germany during the War...it also showed how intimidation, often based on erroneous beliefs and not known facts (read the book about this) was a dangerous and yet effective tool of war...sort of what the world is facing now

5-Stars. An immensely satisfying book - though I do find it improbable boys of 13 & 14 act, think and speak like 30-year old men. After you get past that fact, you will enjoy this book. Now, on to author's next book.

Children to a Degree. I arrived in Germany in December 1946, a naive American teenager. The shock of viewing the destruction opened my eyes to the horrors of war. After reading " Children To A Degree" I now have a better understanding of the life the children and their families endured on a daily basis. Anyone interested in learning how children's lives are affected and opinions formed by affairs out of their control should read this book. As you read Karl's story you will wonder how someone so young could gain such mature thinking.

Well written and informative. This was a very good book and after reading it I immediately downloaded Loyal To A Degree, the second book in the series. I found myself liking Karl and pulling for him. Definitely provides a look at growing up in the Third Reich.

Children to a Degree. A young adult book in style, but one that I found fascinating as an adult old enough to remeumber WWll when I was Karl's age. I always wondered about ordinary Germans and how they responded to Hitler's madness. This book takes us into a supposedly typical German family from an intelligent adolescent's point of view and shows his desire to do his best while using his mind and for the first time, answering my questions about how one might be drawn into an evil system while maintaining some sort of character in the process. The only other book that has done this for me is "Stones from the River" by Ursula (can't remember last name) I would strongly recommend this book for a person young or old, who is interested in this period of history
