Revival by Stephen King Book Summary

Stephen King presents “a fresh adrenaline rush of terror” (People) in this electrifying #1 New York Times bestseller!

The new minister came to Harlow, Maine, when Jamie Morton was a boy doing battle with his toy army men on the front lawn. The young Reverend Charles Jacobs and his beautiful wife brought new life to the local church and captivated their congregation. But with Jamie, he shares a secret obsession—a draw so powerful, it would have profound consequences five decades after the shattering tragedy that turned the preacher against God, and long after his final, scathing sermon. Now Jamie, a nomadic rock guitarist hooked on heroin, meets Charles Jacobs again. And when their bond becomes a pact beyond even the Devil’s devising, Jamie discovers that the word revival has many meanings….

Revival. Boring, trite, ridiculous use of narrative to reveal information. Frankenstein has NOT BEEN resurrected. RIP Shelley.

Loved it!. Like a fine wine, Steven King's writing just keeps getting better and better with age. This book is a worthy successor to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

Horrifying and beautiful. My absolute favorite book.

Another Disappointment!. I have followed Stephen King books and movies all my life. My favorite book was “Needful Things!” Unfortunately the “Revival” is another in an ever growing list of disappointments! I would not recommend this book!

Great read for King fans 📖👍👍. Stephen King is a master at creating rich, engaging characters and setting up a great, suspenseful ending. Revival doesn't disappoint.

A Gripping Story, A King Ending. King is famously known for his ability to weave intricate story lines with gritty detail, and he does not fall short in regard to ‘Revival’. A strong starting narrative develops an instant connection with the speaker and forces you to care for him. His journey is long and arduous, but it is the reoccurring appearances of his childhood pastor throughout his life that forges his path. Prepare to enjoy a tale that questions the very notion of reality, religion, and relief after death, but don’t expect numerous cliffhangers in transitions. The story itself is a wonderful work of fiction, but doesn’t quite match his previous novels that grip you so hard you find yourself hours past your perceived time. While it is not a constant attack on your psyche, it is a very well crafted piece you will ultimately enjoy.

THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING. I loved this book!!!!!!!!! It's so good I don't even know where to start. Just trust me ignore all these bad comments. I'm a college student and avid Stephen king reader I love him so much. This is the first book I've read front to back in one week since hunger games.

Scarrrry!!!. Very scary it gives life to all of my wondering I do at 4 am about life and death and the meaning of it all. As I read I could picture every scene. It scared me to death and back. Great writer and story teller that Stephen King is. I love his words and always will. Keep em coming scare master!!

Not too shabby. Good story line for the most part. Ending didn’t exactly disappoint but not the best Steven King has written.

Fantastic Read. I’ve been reading Stephen King since the late 80s and have read many, though not all, his novels. I think he’s actually getting better. This one is such a well-told story, I read it twice.

Revival almost. King could write the phone book and it would be really a good read. However I don't think this is on his top ten

Awesome! By 👑👸🏻♿️. The basic ingredient is 1/2 Frankenstein & 1/2 Lovecraft. Laced with a glaze of religion & science 2 taste. Cooked on high, then simmered 4 a bit, & served with a heaping helping of gratitude. & now I must find the recipe 4 immortality! I can c y some reviewers thought this was depressing. I loved it though & am even more greatful 4 every day of my life. The memory of this story will haunt me 4 a long time, even after I die I think.

Much better. What else can I say but "much better." This is kings second best book in a long time (11/21/63 being his best since Duma Key. This book is definitely better than the forgettable carnival themed book that came out a year ago... So forgettable, in fact, that I cannot recall its title. It doesn't quite reach the level of "IT", "Pet Semetary" or even "Tommyknockers", and isn't really scary in the way "Salem's Lot" was, but it is well written and fits the vein of "The Green Mile". This book is worth the read... Especially if you really dig Stephen King's work.

The Hook that Brought Me Back. This book was a random read that turned out to be the hook that reeled me back into the arms Stephen King in my Adulthood. This book has no comfort to give. This is King at his best Lovecraftian. King takes us on a journey of existential terror, and much like Pet Semetary, provides us with an intimate look at humanity grappling with agony, the trauma that comes from experiencing the agony, and the huge impact our coping methods have on our humanity— Whether it be through suicide, therapy, drugs, or trying to become a God…Death is still always patiently waiting at the end of that tunnel, and we all share that same sense of dread when thinking about it. The book ultimately ends with the reader forced to consider, “What if our collective dread is 100% justified?”

Not his best book but still good.. I found the book to be suspenseful at times, mostly in the first 3/4 of it. After that it seemed to lose my interest. It was good, just not great.

Revival By Stephen King. My first horror book, my first SK book, but not movies. I loved The Shining as a youngster. This book was awesome! Readers Note: I believe there is a God and I ask for forgiveness more frequently after reading this book. 😍

Revival. I enjoyed 80% of this book. The last 20% is just ridiculous. Don’t waste your time or your money on this one.

Revival by Stephan king. Whoa great read. I finished this book in less than four days.

Revival. Not my favorite.

I Feel Ripped Off. I will believe this book was written by Stephen King AFTER you have convinced me my head is a pumpkin. I lied. I wouldn’t believe you even then. It is clearly written by a person who has studied and mastered the mechanics of prose, how to put very many words together in a way that makes them seem to make sense together, to contribute to the rendering of a story. The author, however, absolutely fails to impress upon the reader even the slightest sense of the suspense the author imagines is oozing from the pages of this book, fails to create any remote sense of danger except for 1.5 pages at the very end - long after all interest in the story has been lost and the only ones still reading are those with a compulsion to finish what they started - and fails to illustrate what is suppose to be a moral conundrum but actually turns out to be a preachy fixation on the part of the star of the story that is hard to get a grip on. I bought a book by the author of “It”, “The Stand”, and “The Shining”. What I got was a book by his nephew who is learning to write and hasn’t the backbone to get started the way his uncle did. I am angry and sorely disappointed.

Revival. I have been a Stephen King fan since he wrote his first novels. I feel his latest works are nowhere near the quality of his earlier works. Revival is a compelling story, but has a clear anti Christian bias from page one until the end. The book has a theme of nihilism and utter hopelessness. The horrible bleak ending is quite possibly the most disturbing climax King has ever written. Rather than being entertained, the reader feel sorry for king and wonder if he is this barren and hopeless in his real life.

Nostalgic Afterlife. I was drawn to pick up this book because of its religious themes and characters. I was pleasantly surprised to stumble into a lovecraftian fabrication of life, death, and what comes after. Its strong sense of nostalgia and fluid passing of time had me emotionally gazing into my own past as I flipped through the pages. This was my first King novel. It wont be my last.

Revival. 4 stars

It's okay.... I've read many SK books over the years. This one is not one of his best efforts.

Revival. This was such a let down. Love Kings books, but don't waste time or money on this one.

Revival. If you suffer from insomnia then you should read this book. One of his worst, it should have been a short story.

One of my Favorite Stephen King books. Next to the Stand my favorite Stephen King book

Revival. Not his best work. I still love to read his books and will always buy and do so. My sister is the one that got me into reading his work and with every book I read she is still with me. So keep on writing and I will keep on reading. You will always be the best. The greatest, and my favorite. Thank you, Glenda

Fantastic novel!. I purchased this novel the day it was released and began reading immediately. I read the first chapter, and put the book down. For some reason I wasn't hooked. Just a couple days ago I decided to start the book over and force myself to read past the first chapter and boy am I glad I did. I read all 476 pages in just two days. I often find myself doing that with King's work. By the end, I felt exhausted and frightened. This novel really took a toll on me, as I felt like I was a part of it. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for an amazing read! Thank you Stephen King. I have no idea how you do it, I'm just glad you do!

Not his best work.. Just ok.

Fantastic. Great book. Enjoyed reading it very much

As always...could not put it down. I find very few authors who never disappoint. Stephen King has always been one and with Revival he stays on top. King puts you right there with the characters, using his unfailing ability to present his readers with the perfect amount of detail to capture you and take you right along for the full ride. I absolutely HAD to know the ending, but then was bummed it was over.

Boooooring....... I think this book was made for people of Stephen King's generation or older. Too many references which a lot of people may not understand and too many useless details just to fill up space. The book was actually intriguing halfway through, but then kinda went all over the place. New characters were introduced (or reintroduced) and the book had no real sequence. I would say don't read this unless it was given to you by a friend. The only real constructive use of this book would be if you needed something to stimulate your mind in order to fall asleep.

As good as it ever was. Another treat from SK. He is equally adept at writing youthful love as he is at writing from an elder’s perspective. This book has both in equal measure.

Wth?. Where's the spanish versión?🤦🏻‍♂️

Ending could use some work. The build-up to the end was typical King. Well-written, first person story with flashbacks and a good grasp of ancient books, symbolism and rites. The clues, however obvious, led to a revival of the dead wife and son. Which would have been a conclusion even more (dare I say) electrifying than the actual ending, which was more fantasy than horror. This was the second SK book in years. But a week ago, I read a blurb about Fairy Tail, and that kind of novel appealed. I snarfed it up as quickly as my everyday tasks would allow. When I told my sister, who is a die-hard SK fan and preorders all of his books, how much I like it, and was thinking about Revival, she said it was not a favorite of her, and for the same reason - didn’t like the ending. I ceased reading King many years ago, along with Dean Koontz. However, I cut my genre teeth on Poe, Lovecraft, with some Bradbury thrown in. But by the time I discovered modern (and not-so modern) mystery novels, I was hooked on the characters, the plots, unraveling clues and red herrings, and sometimes making that leap of cognition to the “Who” became addictive. Less so, in TV because then you can use intuition by watching faces and expressions.

Dark. This is perhaps the darkest of Stephen King's works so far. Unlike many of his works this one ends on a note of fatalistic resignation. Not knowing what religious beliefs he holds - if any - I find myself wondering whether this is a reflection of his own hopelessness. King's writing almost always has a point to it; I'm not sure I know or am comfortable with his point here, or if there is one; hopefully time and reflection will reveal that to me, but this book leaves me with a sadness I have not felt with other works of his that I have read, perhaps because there's no real resolution. For anyone who is a Stephen King fan (and I am), this book will not disappoint. But it raises more questions than it answers, and maybe that *is* the point.

Loved how this book eventually got into my head. I don't understand all the complaints over this book. Then again I don't understand why "The Shining" is considered such a favorite. I guess I just look at things my own way. This story was essentially a fifty year emotional journey involving two connected people and many in between. Dealing with love and loss, life and death. Asks the question many ask at some point. Thoroughly enjoy and highly recommend reading completely through.

And the hits just keep on coming. As an avid Stephen King fan, and owner of all of his books in hardback, I am very pleased with this latest masterpiece. I am disappointed that it took me far too long to finally finish reading, but it had very little to do with the contents and far too much to do with real life interruptions. I will forever regret that I didn't have the guts to walk through those spider decorated gates in Bangor back in the early 80's to get my copy of The Stand autographed. But after all it was Halloween and I was more than just a little freaked out. Mr King will always be my favorite author and in many ways that "pusher man" who always provides just the right drug. "Goddamn the Pusher Man..."

A compelling tale. This wasn't the roller coaster ride 'Mr. Mercedes' was but was still a good read. The question of where we go when we die is the main one here. With a very careful look at religion and what it means on a personal level. Questions were asked, and they leave you wondering about your own mortality and faith. More of a 'great tragedy' than thriller or mystery, it makes me question my own beliefs.

Boring. May have worked as a short story. Long and boring.

Revival. Not one of Stephen King best

Revival. He's not the writer he once was, and I sometimes think it is a rote act, but I still enjoy him. I'd love to have the guy back who wrote the early novels. What he still does well is present people who seem real, and not cardboard cutouts.

The Revival. The whole story was enjoyable and compelling, and I connected with the characters, but the climax seemed rushed and out of nowhere.

Another good one. Pretty good, he’s still the best ever

Probably one of the.... Scariest endings of a book that I’ve read in a while. It left me quite disturbed. If anyone thought that Stephen King had dropped off at all, this book put him back on top of the greatest writers of this generation list. LONG LIVE THE KING!!!

Great revival. A great fleshed out version of a lovecraft, smith, machen short story. Themes are all familiar if you enjoy any of these authors.

Meh. Could of been decent if the ending did not make it so stupid.

Bravo. Half of this story is a wonderful coming of age story about a boy, his family, and his first love. A quarter of this story is about his downfall, and a quarter of the story is grim. I loved the first half and I couldn't stop reading the second. Bravo Mr. King.

Great story. One of my favorite SK books, a must!

Revival. It's Stephen King, it's a must read, it's everything you would expect from him. His best? Not by a long shot but still a good read. - Constant Reader

Not his best nor his worst. I love reading Stephen's books. The characters always become so real. If you are wanting to read a classic, scary King novel, this is not the one for you. If you want one with his great characters that pull you in from the first chapter and wind you along the stories of their lives into a definite King denouement, you will stay up late to finish just like you have with most of his books. Not his best but worth the journey.
