Devil's Breath by Emily Kimelman Book Summary

At the end of a long journey, lightning flashed outside my window…I need more control.

My hand jumped to Mulberry's forearm and squeezed. Shutting my eyes, I struggled not to picture the small plane cracking in half, my body flying through the air, still seat-belted to the beige leather chair; Blue, his paws grasping at empty space, disappearing into the bruise-colored clouds.

The small jet shook and our pilot's voice, smooth and steady, came over the loudspeaker, "Sorry about the bumps. We'll have you down in Miami in about twenty minutes. Just hold tight."

Mulberry put his hand over mine. "Don't worry," he said. "We'll be there soon." He smiled, making his crow's feet crinkle. Mulberry's eyes were deep emerald with ochre and flashes of gold. I tried to smile back but could tell I was just giving grimace. Mulberry handed me his whisky and soda. I finished it off.

The ice cubes danced in my empty glass. Then we were suddenly out of the clouds. Below us the ocean was close, steel blue with white caps cresting each wave. The city's skyscrapers looked like towers of mercury in the storm's eerie light. Raindrops clung to my window, streaking across it as our speed pushed them aside.

Hugh was somewhere down there in that city, a flat landscape made multi-dimensional through the efforts of man. My stomach lurched as we dropped through the air, my seat belt pressing into me. Blue whined softly and flattened himself even further onto the floor of the plane.

A giant of a dog, Blue has the coat of a wolf, the snout of a Collie, with one brown eye and one blue. Both of which were trained on me at that moment. My fear was freaking him out. Closing my eyes, I tried to imagine the turbulence as a gentle rocking but it didn't work. An ice cube jumped out of my glass landing on the carpeting. Blue, his belly still flat on the ground, inched his way toward it, then his tongue stretched out and pulled the cube into his mouth. He crunched twice before looking back up at me, now hoping for more whisky-flavored ice. I couldn't help but smile at the expectant look on his fuzzy face.

We touched down with a jerk that sent my heart racing one more time. But as we slowly taxied toward our hangar the storm seemed suddenly minor. Just a breath of wind fluttered across the puddles, turning them into shimmering mirrors framed by the dark tarmac.

"All right Ms. Rye," our captain's voice came back on over the loudspeaker. "Sorry about that descent, but we got you here safe. Thanks for flying with us, I hope we'll have you back real soon."

As soon as humanly possible. I didn't want to be here, but Hugh was in trouble, and if there was one person I cared about in this world it was him.

He was a tie to my murdered brother, a shared memory bank. I would do anything to help Hugh.

P.S. The dog does not die.

Really enjoy Sydney Rye. I have liked every Sydney Rye book I have read so far and look forward to more.

Hard-boiled Heroine and her Heroic Dog. Written in a sparse manner, this is another masterpiece in the series. Character development, plot, emotions, all are more compelling because of the writing style. And how rare it is to read a great suspense novel that is written in first-person. I want more! Now, please!! Why? In all, this is "just" a great story.

The devils breath. I love this book. Sydney and Blue are great characters.

Couldn't put it down. I have read a few of the books in this series and will read the rest. I want to see who Sidney partners up with and follow her in her next adventure. I love dogs and Blue is the best!

Devils Breath. I loved the book , in fact, loved the entire series. I can only hope there is more to come.

The Devil's Breath. I've read several (5) of the Sidney Rye series novels, all of which I have enjoyed tremendously. The Devil's Breath is an excellent read. The thing I like best is the constant see-sawing tension, never gone but rising and falling like the waves at the beach. There is a rhythm to it, but it isn't a predictable rhythm, so even that creates a tension. And it builds. You don't put these down, to pick up again later, because you can't. One motif of tension released is only building the next. You are not free until the last page.

Strings of Glass. Well written, hard to put down. In short, I love her writing.

Love it!!!. Love this book. Can't wait for the Sydney Rye novel!!!

The Devil's Breath. I really enjoyed this book. I am always looking for a good mystery and this fit the bill. I will read more from Emily soon.

The Devil's Breath. Very enjoyable read!

The Devils Breath. I found this book to be one that a person can lose themselves in. I had problems putting the book down. My husband had to call me a couple of times to get me to put the book away. I can't wait till I can afford to buy the other two! Thank you so much!

The Devils Breath. A great read filled with awesome characters As a female myself, I almost wanted to envision myself being that strong and independent woman as Joy/Sydney. Thanks for sharing your expert knowledge with your readers of places that most of us only dream visiting. Kim W, BBA,BSN,RN

The Devil’s Breath. As good as they come. I’m totally hooked on this author.

The Devil's Breath. Great read! I really enjoyed it. I especially liked that the locale was South Florida, my second home. I have to go back and read books 2, 3, & 4 to find out what I missed between books 1 and 5. Looking forward to it!

Fun escape. I really enjoy this series of adventures of a strong woman and her faithful dog, Blue. A great story and look forward to escaping with the next book soon.

Grips you. Continuing story of Joy/Sidney Rye; tough, resilient, passionate. In the middle of the book, way too many pages focused on Sidney and her mutual hot sexual attraction to her ex Dan and her new guy, and the story line paused for far too long. Felt like filler. That's why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. But by the end of the book, Sidney is just as compelling as in the previous books, and all the books are wonderful.

A good read, not for children.. This book delivers just what it promises. A strong female detective, some dirty language, and a dash of sex. That makes it obvious that this is NOT a book for children. It is a book for adults who like mystery and suspense, especially if you like to see justice served to those who seem to live outside the court system. The plot is excellent. The characters are well rounded and interesting. The setting is well portrayed. I lived in Florida for two years, and her descriptions are right on without being intrusive into the story. The dog in the story is well trained, but still behaves like a dog. I have to admit that I prefer stories without the bad language and sex, but I did really enjoy this book. I found it drawing me in and holding my attention to the end. I would recommend this book, especially if you are a dog lover.

The Devil's Breath. Good fun adventure, light reading.

The Devil's Breath. I loved it! Like all the others. Sydney is very cool but Blue (her puppy) is still my favorite! Love the relationship between Sydney and her big protector Blue. Can't wait for the next book!

The Devil's Breath. This is a fantastic book. I couldn't put it down. It draws you in & you can't stop until the end. Would recommend to all adult readers.

The Emily Kimelman series continues-Devil's Breath. I have only read one of Emily Kimelman's other books-"Unleashed" but if this book is any example, it will make you want to read more about Sydney Rye's adventures. The characters are introduced and interwoven so well that the reader is encouraged to continue reading this exciting adventure. As Sydney slips in and out of dangerous adventures the reader is drawn in while breathlessly waiting to see how Sydney will escape. Always a surprise ending with excitement in each chapter pulling you forward. Although not a book for children, most adults would enjoy reading this book.

The Devil's Breath. Fantastic. Great story by a great story teller.

Quite entertaining. Enjoyed the story and looking forward to read more.

A good read. More violent than I was expecting, not overdone. Not for kids. Was nice to have a strong female character who wins and doesn't fall into the nearest mans arms to be taken care of! But not in a man hating way. Will look out for more of this series.

Wonderful. The Sydney Rye books are great. Suspense, a bit of romance. You just want to keep reading until you're done. Can't wait to start the next one.

Devil's Breath. Wish it was longer. Ate a whole bag of popcorn, and had to finish the book - there was no putting it down. This is the first Sidney Rey novel I have read. Can't understand how I have missed them. Will be back for more!

The Devil's Breath. This is the first book in the series I have read and will be reading more of Sydney Rye mysteries. Very enjoyable read.

Devils breath. First book I started to read by this author. Too many 4 letter words which were not necessary to the plot. Read 20 pages and quit.
