The best science fiction. No "one of". The author's imagination is far beyond conventional fictions who just focus on a single topic. This is a combination of science, history, humanity and love (a higher level). My strong recommendation.

One of the best. I have been reading Sci Fi for over 50 years. The rise of Science fantasy had almost made me give up the genre. This book, and hopefully it's sequel, is a new start for real science Sci Fi. On its on it is one of the best I have read. To the author- Thank you.

Good concept, great execution. I have to say I was a bit concerned given the depths of Chinese history I wasn’t as familiar with but the translation notes made it all a breeze. Great read.

Cool. I don’t read science fiction much but these concepts were very interesting. I was expecting some huge climactic battle or something but I don’t think it was really needed. The book was great.

After reading the book and comments. This book was in no way intended to appease the small minded. The idea of science fiction is to explore the “what if” not the “it is” and expound upon what may be possible in that realm. As mentioned in the author’s note, we are all cuffed to reality and the laws that govern our existence whether it be political, religious, or physical laws of the universe, but that does not mean that we cannot be free to dance in our chains. Secondly, this story was not meant to challenge only one issue of philosophy, ideology, scientific limitation, or thought, but rather an entire plethora of thought provoking concepts and perspectives can be captured from page to page. If you are looking for a single straight line narrative, it is not found here. Several complex narratives of love, science, science fiction, history, politics, morality, and human philosophy combine together to create a story that otherwise would not stand. I only give it four stars, as times it was a little rough to follow and a little dry, but with a little work, it came to be a very satisfying story.

Disappointing. Wooden characters, implausible scenarios, contrived settings (has the author ever played a video game?), all garnished with thinly veiled CCP propaganda.

What the heck?. I can’t help but think these reviews are fake. I’m a casual sci-fi reader and after 100 pages of no plot, no character depth, and a whole lot of switching around between undeveloped characters and disconnected montages, I give up. It’s torture. Maybe something is lost in translation but it’s like the positive reviewers and negative ones are reading two completely different books.

Super intriguing concepts. I really enjoyed this. It’s a little bit strange in the way it tells the story but it all works out and is better for it I think.

Interesting novel. Started off slow but Left me wanting more.

The Three Body Problem. This brilliant sci-fi work from China has been translated into English. The Chinese author Cixin Liu has created an epic that includes the cultural revolution, plenty of cool physics, an amazing computer game, nanotechnology, first contact and the threat of alien invasion. It will become a classic of the genre in the west as it is already in the east. Look forward to the rest of the trilogy.

The Three-Body Problem. Slow paced, a simply stupid premise. I can’t imagine how it won any awards. I got 3/4 through and just didn’t care any more… I put it down.

Literary science fiction with an emphasis on science. I have read a few of the translator's pieces and liked them as have my students. So I was eager to read this book. It is excellent. I was both instructed and delighted by the story and the language.

Great story. The story was so good the fact that I didn’t grasp much of the science was ok.

It's a great start. I'm Chinese and I've read all three novels of this series in Chinese. In my opinion the second novel is the most wonderful one. I hope all of them can be translated well and published soon.

Do you believe??. If you like science and don’t mind stopping every now and then to do some research this book is for you. The first book in this series leaves us with more questions than answers but that’s where the fun is.

Gripping!. I blazed through this story in two short days when it usually takes me and my ADHD months to do so with other similarly sized books. The pacing in The Three-Body Problem is incredible, and the hard science is approachable. I loved the mystery and buildup throughout the narrative though wish I hadn’t read the premise as it unfortunately spoils a fair amount. Go into this book as blind as possible! Though I’ve always loved the genre, this is the first sci-fi novel I’ve read since I was a kid, reading William Sleator; I appear to be having a bit of a sci-fi phase and The Three-Body Problem is just what I was looking for. I can’t wait to read the sequels; I think I’ll go buy them right now!

Lot of hype, but missed the mark for me. Was excited to give it a try having heard and read so much hype hailing it as such a groundbreaking work. Some interesting concepts, but the translation comes out awkward and makes for ponderous reading. The plot is complex (not in a good way) and difficult to follow and the characters are generally quite flat. Some plot elements require a real suspension of disbelief that took me out of the story. I slogged all the way through to the end but am not inclined to read the other two books in the trilogy.

Sci Fi Greatness. Refreshingly original story that is intellectually stimulating and entertaining. The story started slow but eventually was captivating up to the last page.

Ugh. Swill.. Fantasy sure but what a slog through impossible pseudoscientific nonsense. A few good parallels analogies etc but what a chore to read.

Not that great. It's an interesting read but only from the perspective of learning about the Chinese culture. The story itself is slow and not especially imaginative.

The three body problem. The absolute most horrifying three books I have ever read.

Fascinating!. Easy to read and ties together multiple threads well.

BEST SCIFI FICITION. 大刘的三体三部曲无疑是当今最好的科幻小说,没有之一。

Great Story. Overall this was an amazing story. I just had a little bit of a tough time with all the technical jargon. I’m not sure you could tell this story without all of the tech stuff, but maybe it could have been made a little easier to digest somehow? Anyway, overall really good story, and I will definitely be reading the next installment

Highly recommended. my favorite sci-fi novel

Headache. this book gave me a headache. It had potential but I couldn’t like it. I tried to read the trilogy many times but all I got was a trilogy of headaches.

Best Chinese Sci-Fi in years. Huge amount of information and imagination packed into one story. Beside the wonderful sci-fi elements, the book portrays vividly the unique cultural and social status of a special period of China. From my point of view, the concept of "by each crime and every kindness, we birth our future" from Cloud Atlas is explained here ever better. If you want to read one book and get to know Chinese science fiction, this is the one to read.

Anti-science gobbledygook!. If you like science, don’t waste your time on this meaningless tirade against it.

支持大刘. 其实第一部科幻性一般,后两部会越来越精彩。虽然故事性不高,但真的是天马行空。

Not very good. Slow, with a million plot holes and a borderline deus ex machina at the end.

I love it!!!. Amazing! what a great writer!

So out of the box. Probably my favorite book now

Fascinating, Off-kilter Trip into Far Out Physics. Cixin Liu takes us on a trip through the universe’s paradoxes and conundrums. I never read a thing about this book in advance, so I was always off-balance, and wondering what the heck I was reading. Yet it worked for me. Despite confusing side trips.

Tedious and unoriginal. I went into this with high hopes. Unfortunately the characters are paper thin, the story is meandering, and the sci-fi ideas are well worn tropes. There’s some interesting stuff about Chinese history but it’s buried under boring prose. The conclusion is basically a deus ex machina. Maybe things get better later in the trilogy, but I couldn’t stick with it.

Interesting read. The concepts in this book really make you question the universe. Highly recommend this book!

Pretty Good!. I thought this was a good book, if unworthy of the adulation it has garnered. Like many translated works, I thought the prose was a little stiff. The translation is full of interesting political, historical and linguistic notes. I also found the narrative to be somewhat chaotic, with its huge scope and shifting perspectives. I thought it was ultimately depressing. I didn’t find any character to be heroic or sympathetic. It seems they, and humanity itself, were all just fodder for the more powerful malign forces present in every circumstance. It has lots of great ideas and scientific insights, but I think I will skip books two and three.

It's not over. Trust me guys, the rest of three body problem would be more and more incredible than every book you had ever seen.

Mediocre at best (spoilers in this review). Other people seem to love this book. I found it to be completely unconvincing. At a certain point I simply wasn’t able to buy the basic premise of the book. The entire plot hinges on there being a very advanced, technological civilization on a planet with a completely chaotic environment. I find it unbelievable that any life could evolve on such a planet much less advanced, intelligent life. So, given the ridiculous premise of the book I am generously giving it two stars - well written but stupid.

Good but overly scientific at times. Great book, would recommend. The only issue I had was the overly complex physics that the author goes into great detail about. If you are interested in the physics at all then you’ll love this book, I was not so it started to drag at times. Still a fantastic book, amazing premise, and great plot. 8/10 would recommend

Best Sci-Fi novel from China.. I have had the privilege to read the original Chinese version. This is the first book of a 3 book series. The start is a bit slow but gradually it leads to the climax and opening of book 2. The imagination of Liu is far-fetched. The scientific theory and storytelling skill are solid. I don't know about the English translation but when I read the original 3 book series, I was deeply engaged. I hope they did a good job translating it and bring it to the global audience. Looking forward!

Best sci fi ever. I've only read the Chinese originals, but the sequel to the Three-Body Problem, Dark Forest, is the most groundbreaking and amazing science fiction I have ever found. Whether you like breath-taking scope, crazy brilliant plot, fascinating characters, witty writing or deep reflections on the nature of the universe, you'll find it all here.

Wow!. Absolutely mind blowing

Compelling. Kept my interested all the way through, looking forward to book 2.

Fantastic Read. The depth of this book is easy enough to understand for casual readers yet has complex imagination and science to reach a wide audience. Captivating and enchanting — I could not put the book down.

A significant and engaging work. This is an excellent story with provocative twists and surprises. Anyone who appreciates classics science fiction will find it hard to put this book down. In addition, the author sets a stage for more interesting tales and opens one's thoughts to unexpected possibilities. As a western reader, the Chinese perspective is also intriguing.
