The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson Book Summary

A devious tale of psychological suspense perfect for fans of Paula Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train—and is soon to be a major movie directed by Agnieszka Holland.

In a tantalizing set-up reminiscent of Patricia Highsmith’s classic Strangers on a Train… On a night flight from London to Boston, Ted Severson meets the stunning and mysterious Lily Kintner. Sharing one too many martinis, the strangers begin to play a game of truth, revealing very intimate details about themselves. Ted talks about his marriage that’s going stale and his wife Miranda, who he’s sure is cheating on him. Ted and his wife were a mismatch from the start—he the rich businessman, she the artistic free spirit—a contrast that once inflamed their passion, but has now become a cliché.

But their game turns a little darker when Ted jokes that he could kill Miranda for what she’s done. Lily, without missing a beat, says calmly, “I’d like to help.” After all, some people are the kind worth killing, like a lying, stinking, cheating spouse. . . .

Back in Boston, Ted and Lily’s twisted bond grows stronger as they begin to plot Miranda's demise. But there are a few things about Lily’s past that she hasn’t shared with Ted, namely her experience in the art and craft of murder, a journey that began in her very precocious youth.

Suddenly these co-conspirators are embroiled in a chilling game of cat-and-mouse, one they both cannot survive . . . with a shrewd and very determined detective on their tail.

A Masterpiece of Suspense. This is a masterpiece of suspense and careful plotting. It has twists and more twists. It is worthy of Alfred Hitchcock.

The kind worth reading!. This book was suspenseful and kept me wanting to turn the page. Finished in just a few days, and I have an incredibly busy life, so that says a lot.

Plot twists galore!. This book was sooooo good! The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars, is because I felt the book went on for a little bit longer than it should have/needed to. There were two times where the book could have ended and I would have been like "top five books I've read this year!" But it didn't, it went on and when it finally did end, I had to check and double check that my iPad screen wasn't frozen and hiding the res of the text. Ending aside, the plot twists (and there are several) in this book are so amazing. I never saw most of them coming and it made for a thrilling, roller coaster of a ride (read). Looking forward to reading another book by this author!

OKEY DOKE. Don’t believe the hype.. Who is writing all these stellar reviews? The writer’s and publisher’s friends? I was excited about this book based on its reviews and it DID NOT live up to it’s expectation. There was one plot twist and the end was okay. oh my god, all these 4-5 star reviews are lies. i’m glad the book was .99 cents. i would have been mad if I had paid more for it.

Okay but very predictable. Not enough character development. Superficial.

Wow! Love this book and this author!. I read this book as if I were in a marathon! The characters, their experiences, and their motives are so interesting that I was captured immediately. Peter Swanson does an amazing job enabling the reader to understand why the "bad guy" is bad. The characters are so well described that the reader is able identify things that happened in each character's life that most likely caused them to become who they are; to become the "bad guy". Peter Swanson is an incredible author, and I'm an instant fan!! I am excited to read his other two books, and I hope that he has his next one coming out soon!

Hard to put down!. This book is really great! Keeps you guessing but you're usually wrong! It is also very different from most suspense books I've read. I liked it better than The Girl on the Train. I highly recommend this one!

The Kind Worth Killing. This is one of the two best mysteries I've ever read & I've been reading them for over 55 years! The other is "A Place of Execution" by Val McDermid. It is full of the most surprising twists & turns. Twice I had to stop reading because I was too overwhelmed by shock, excitement & surprise to continue. The writing is flawless in every way. Simply a stupendous book!

Good mystery!. Loved this! Did not think it was predictable. Really great storyline

Ok. Eh it had some good twists and turns. Then ended out of nowhere. I’m so confused

Fantastic ending!. I’m one of those weirdos that likes to know the ending so I usually read ahead. This time I decided to read to the end with no spoilers. I am so glad I did! Although I suspected how the book would play out I was pleasantly surprised how the author revealed it. Bravo! I also enjoyed reading from the different characters perspective and the fact that, save for one, it wasn’t the same characters voices all the way through. Great suspense. I would recommend.

Disappointing. Saw this book recommended on a TikTok about great suspense stories and decided to check it out. There were definitely a few surprising twists in the story, but it ended incredibly flat and ultimately with no point or enough entertainment value to excuse the rushed end. I am shocked at how many great reviews this book has. Wish I would have picked anything else. Also, I think this book should have a TW for child SA, it was a very unexpected inclusion that I didn’t enjoy reading about. I probably would have read something else had I known, or at least been mentally prepared for the terrible image described.

Eh. Endin was terrible

Ehh. It was interesting at first, but I got bored of it fast. I tried finishing it but just got half way and stopped.

The Kind Worth Killing. Poor writing.

Great book. Loved this book was hard to put down at times. Would love to talk about the character lily but don’t want to ruin it for you . Awesome read.

Plot twist galore. Enjoyed the quick read. After being blind sided by the first plot twist they didn’t stop.

The Kind Worth Killing. Brilliant!! Great ending, absolutely loved the story

An ok book. This book is worth the read, although it is a little slow at parts and not structured as you would imagine. I wish it ended differently and not so abruptly. It was ok.

Chills 😅. Greats read ❗️

Easy and great read. Loved it! Such an easy and fast paced read. So many twists and turns that I never expected. 10/10

Okay.... I felt like this book was pretty predictable. I also felt like the characters fell flat and were pretty unrealistic. Definitely not worth $12.99. I would've enjoyed it more if I'd paid less ;). I'm still not sure how I feel about the ending. The whole second half of the book seemed rushed and the ending was no exception.

Quickly became a favorite of mine. This book is so suspenseful and keeps you entertained throughout the entire thing. There are a lot of plot twists and I definitely recommend reading!

Great Read, Not a Fan of Ending Style. The story had me from the beginning. I thoroughly enjoyed the majority of the book, but can’t understand the “great ending” comment from other reviewers. Loved the thriller/mystery aspects, and enjoyed the writing style very much. Would definitely rate the book more highly if I felt satisfied at the end.

The Kind Worth Killing. This book is so good! The plot twists were amazingly written! This is my favorite book I have ever read.

WORTH READING. I loved it! Wish ending was different but amazing book

Several twists!. I'm surprised to see some thought this book was predictable because I was certainly surprised by several twists in the book. This is a book I was able to read very quickly, partly because it was so captivating and partly because the author wrote in such a fluid manner that it made reading it easy. I really enjoyed the author's style of writing and how we heard the story from different characters' point of views. I'd recommend to any fan of suspense.

Good Read for Sure. I really like his writing style and the interplay of the characters. Fun, twisted, read.

Delicious Twists and turns - great mystery. Loved this. Recommend to anyone who is looks for a different kind of mystery that keeps you guessing. Was on a list of books "most like "Gone Girl." I actually preferred it to the now famous novel. Will watch for continued releases from this author.

Disappointed. The book had maybe one unpredictable twist, and the fact that every single man, including the detective, became transfixed with the female killer was beyond cliche. It felt tired and overdone, and this author has some kind of voyeur fetish

Awesome..... This book had me from the first chapter. It is a great story, with twists and turns you won't see coming. Love books like this one! Trust me, read it!

Even Better!!. This one was even better than Her Every Fear, the ending is so awesome!

Can’t wait for the movie!. Great book with twists and turns throughout!
