The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black Book Summary

A girl makes a secret sacrifice to the faerie king in this lush New York Times bestselling fantasy by author Holly Black. Set in the same world as The Cruel Prince!

In the woods is a glass coffin. It rests on the ground, and in it sleeps a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointed as knives....

Hazel and her brother, Ben, live in Fairfold, where humans and the Folk exist side by side. Since they were children, Hazel and Ben have been telling each other stories about the boy in the glass coffin, that he is a prince and they are valiant knights, pretending their prince would be different from the other faeries, the ones who made cruel bargains, lurked in the shadows of trees, and doomed tourists. But as Hazel grows up, she puts aside those stories. Hazel knows the horned boy will never wake.

Until one day, he does....

As the world turns upside down, Hazel has to become the knight she once pretended to be.

The Darkest Part of the Forest is bestselling author Holly Black's triumphant return to the opulent, enchanting faerie tales that launched her YA career.

Something missing. I actually liked this book. I thought it was an interesting story with a little mystery. I can't pinpoint exactly what I didn't like, I just felt like it was missing something.

My new favorite!. I got this book thinking I was just gonna fill some time but I fell in love with it. I love each character, the mystery, the setting, it’s all wonderful. To find out there wasn’t a sequel hurt me deep in my bones. I’m going to be reading much more Holly Black in the days to come.

I loved it. Such a sucker for faeries and Holly Black. Wished I would've bought this in paperback to keep forever but waiting till I got my hands on it to read it after the free preview was too much. I absolutely loved the characters, the story and setting. I hope she never stops writing not many faerie books out there and she is absolutely amazing at bringing this other world to life.

Holly Black is life.. Loved it!!!

Absolutely in LOVE. This is one of the most well written books I have ever read. It's a book many gay kids never thought they would ever get. It enhanced my sense of "normal" in the best way. Holly Black is a visionary tying In the realities of the modern world as well as the magical world in which lurks in our shadows. It is a must read for anyone. The way she utilizes words is enchanting. If I could give more than 5 stars you bet I would. Will defiantly be reading more of her books!

It was okay.... I really love most of Holly Black’s books but this one was a little disappointing.

Good read!. Another great book from the world of the Folk of the Air. I finished the book in one sitting. To be fair, I also finished the Folk of the Air trilogy in one night. Something about Holly Black’s books turn me into a voracious, unstoppable reader. I love the complexity of the characters and the mix of modernity with folklore. Definitely would recommend!

Time well spent.... Holly Black does another masterful job of giving voice to our dark and sinister dreams and musings with bark, leaf, and bone in the land of the fae. Again, these are not the tales of childhood but the real tales of lesson and triumph meant to inspire the reader to feats beyond their station and beyond imagination. Lovely read, beautifully flawed and embraceable characters in a world you can't help but want to be a part of.. In all its beautiful horror.

Could of been better. I love Holly Black! My kind of author and genre. But this book was very slow and boring. I thought more was going to happen since the beginning started with such a great fairy tale story. I recommend any other Holly Black book, but this one had a hard time catching up. As much as I loved the characters and their looks, it was kinda difficult to know which sibling the horned boy was attracted too. And for a character that the book is based around, you barely see him in the book at all. This would be a cute and appropriate book for someone 14-16 who’s starting to read more mature books, since Holly Black’s books are much more dark and violent with a hint of beautiful romance. Love love love Holly Black tho, my fairy Gothmother!

Great Storytelling!. The Darkest Part of the Forest is a beautifully crafted work. With faeries and knights, it can really be compared to a fairy tale. I love how detailed the world and its creatures were; it brought out a desire to experience it firsthand. I like the way Arthurian legends were incorporated into the book so that Hazel and her brother Ben were truly living them. It was really ingenious! The town. I like how Fairfold is privy to the Fae’s activities, knowing they exist and not just playing the part of superstitious townsfolk. At this point, I was curious of the world outside Fairfold – whether it too was like this. It seems my wish was granted. When Hazel experiences a life outside of Fairfold, she realizes not all towns are like this one – monsters and magic exist simply for children. For the most part, the reader experiences this world through Hazel’s eyes, but the POV does change. Although I noticed the change in personalities, their voices did not stand out individually. This was one of the few flaws I had with the book. Hazel goes through a lot of character development. She is engaged in an internal battle with herself. She keeps a lot of secrets from her friends and family, and her struggles with this make her very real. I like how when her bad decisions get her into trouble, she realizes it when it’s too late. I was able to connect with this part of her and even though I didn’t like her in the beginning, she really grew on me. Overall, Holly Black has created this perfect blend of story-telling – one that I love reading. This is the first work I’ve read of the author and definitely plan to read her other works – having fallen in love with the way she spins magic and ink together.

Nice concept, bad delivery. The book was definitely a great concept. Although, I found that the author could have spent more time fine tuning her characters. There were many instances that I had to google certain things, because I became frustrated waiting for an answer. She failed to get to the point fast enough to keep the interest of the reader. Also, the flow of the writing was very choppy and awkward. The book was full of moments that needed to move quicker and in comparison, moments which needed more explanation. The book would have benefited from more editing. Despite all of the issues, I enjoyed the plot and would recommend it to those with patience.
