Still Life with Murder Book Reviews
Still Life with Murder by P.B. Ryan Book Summary
"What a thoroughly charming book! A beautiful combination of entertaining characters, minute historical research, and a powerful evocation of time and place." —New York Times bestselling author Barbara Hambly
Boston, 1868: The dawn of the Gilded Age, an era of burgeoning commerce and invention, of unimaginable new fortunes and lavish excess—for some. Born into poverty, young Nell Sweeney scratches by on her wits and little else until fortune blesses her with a position as nursery governess to the fabulously wealthy Hewitts. But she soon learns that ugly secrets lurk beneath the surface of their gold-plated world.
The Hewitts' eldest son, William, a former Union Army battle surgeon and the black sheep of the family, was reported to have died years before in a notorious Confederate prison. But one snowy February afternoon, his parents learn that he is, in fact, still alive—and in jail for having murdered a man while on opium. Infuriated by his son's deception and convinced of his guilt, August Hewitt forbids his wife from coming to Will's aid, so she begs Nell to help exonerate him. Nell finds that she must delve into the kind of dark and treacherous underworld she thought she'd left far behind if she is to unearth the truth before the hangman's noose tightens around William Hewitt's throat.
Still Life with Murder is a #1 national bestseller originally published by Berkley Prime Crime.

Historical mystery. This was a very pleasant and interesting book with a good plot and a view of different classes during and after the war. I would recommend reading this book.
A great read. Compelling characters, interesting plot, great use of humor and irony. A new author for my favorites list.
Historical mystery novel. Set in Brahmin Boston on Colonnade Ave., this mystery of post Civil War participants is rather intriguing and well written and thought out. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience! Will seek this series for further reading. Recommend this although it has an element of restrained romance in it.
Excellent murder mystery set post-War Between The States. Well written, historical, plot twists, well-edited. A pleasure to read
Still Life. Excellent story with good descriptions of the seedy world of opium and life of poor women during that time period. Thank you for not describing it too graphically but just enough to make us sad for William. Thanks, g
Still Life with Murder. 👍
A Nice Read. A sweet post-Civil War budding romance along with family secrets, and the seamier side of Boston.
Awesome Start. This was an awesome start to what will hopefully be a great series. I loved the protagonist of the book, Nell. She was smart and unexpected. The mystery was a good one and keeps you guessing till the end. The author also did a good job with the historical setting. I will definitely be continuing on in the series.
Exciting read. Winding plot with a lot of twists and likable characters. Pleasant interlude in an busy life.
Still Life with Murder. Nell Sweeney is an Irish lass who clawed her way out of the depths of poverty to become governess in a wealthy, Brahmin household in 1870s Boston. She is super intelligent and persistent in trying to clear the name of the oldest son of her employer, Viola Hewitt, of the murderer of a nefarious rogue. Dr. Will Hewitt, aka will Touissant, doesn’t help matters as he is an opium addict who keeps the truth of the night in question from anyone who wants to help him. Lots of twists and turns in the plot as Nell, viola, and Jack Pratt (Will’s bff since childhood) persevere until the horrible truth finally surfaces with heartbreaking repercussions. Great read! I recommend this book and look forward to reading more of the series.
Still Life With Murder. Great book. Surprise ending.
