Sign Language for Kids - Alphabet by Jeff Millett & Riley Weber Book Summary

“Sign Language for Kids – Alphabet” is an interactive book that teaches children the American Sign Language (ASL) alphabet, so that they can know how to fingerspell. In the book, children will learn how to fingerspell each letter of the alphabet. They will learn the proper placement of hand, through short and simple video instructions, as well as through illustrations for each letter of the alphabet.  All the signs are taught by professional ASL instructor, Jeff Millett, with illustrations by best-selling author and illustrator of “Tongue Twisters for Kids”, Riley Weber.

Knowing how to fingerspell is important in sign language, because it is used for spelling things such as people’s names, places, titles, brands, and more!  Fingerspelling also helps kids know how to spell a word, letter by letter.

There many other benefits to learning sign language, such as:

Bilingualism is a great brain booster.  It enriches and enhances your cognitive processes, helping you to become a better problem solver, a more creative thinker, a better listener, and you can obtain greater academic achievement! Knowing another language also promotes cultural awareness, literacy, and other intellectual benefits.

It’s growing in popularity.  American Sign Language (or ASL), is the fourth most studied languages in colleges and universities in the U.S.

Communicate with deaf babies.  Speech is a medium.  It is imperative that deaf babies are exposed to natural language (i.e. ASL), within the first two years of life.

Sign language is beautiful!  People find sign language unique, fascinating, graceful, and expressive.  It is difficult to learn all the signs, but the experience is all worth it and fulfilling.

Fingerspelling helps kids and students learn how to spell a word, letter by letter.

Appreciate literary arts.  Visual-spatial language is filled with cinematic devices, rhymes, rhythms, movements, and more.

Sign language is used to communicate with some animals such as some chimpanzee’s and gorilla’s.

Sign language is also used as a profession.  Knowing basic sign language can be useful for firefighters, police officers, and other civic servants, as well as scuba divers, stock traders, and more.

You can talk with sign language from a distance or in a quiet or loud setting and be understood.

Develop cultural awareness and language competency!

Great Sign Book!. This is a great interactive book to teach the kids about the wonderful language of sign language. The book is simple for kids. It teaches (and shows) children how to finger spell. Each letter has it's own video. The illustrations are fun as well. This is the best sign language book for kids that I've seen.

Now I Know My ASL ABC's. This ASL Book has been great for teaching my kids the SIGN LANGUAGE alphabet in an easy and clear way. The illustrations and videos are all very helpful. Thanks!

Love it!. I have been looking for an app to teach my children the correct way to sign the letters of the alphabet. This one was easy to use for the kids and they can now finger spell all of the letters (even my 4 year old). Thank you!

I’m glad I found this!. My kids love learning sign language … the big colorful pictures and easy to read vocab words make it so easy that my 3yr old can do it. This is a wonderful little book to have in the library for long trips.. it is fun and educational and i like that.
