NEBULA AWARD WINNER • HUGO AWARD FINALIST • “If you want a fantasy with strong characters and brilliantly original variations on ancient stories, try Uprooted!”—Rick Riordan

“Breathtaking . . . a tale that is both elegantly grand and earthily humble, familiar as a Grimm fairy tale yet fresh, original, and totally irresistible.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: NPR, BuzzFeed, Tordotcom, BookPage, Library Journal, Publishers Weekly

Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life.

Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood.

The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her.

But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose.

I am moved!!. An exceptional novel, forever a fan🫶🏼❣️

Felt like 3 books in one. A great story and loved that the heroine had to struggle for her victory

The best. My favorite book ever other than P&P

Outstanding fantasy!. The character arc is both believable and original with complications and tweaks that make for a compelling read. Recommended.

Best read in ages. I loved this book! Different from every other “fairy tale” or fantasy story I’ve read recently. Still lots of fun, exciting, and surprising.

Loved it!. I wish this was a series! I would love to read more books in this world and with these characters. Agnieszka was awesome, I loved her magic. I kinda wish the romance was a little spicier, but I thought they developed a really cute dynamic and I was smiling at the end.

Fantastic book!. There was a 3 chapter sample in the break room, and I was hooked. I bought the book and I was rewarded! The rest of the book is better than the sample. The story telling and the world that is created is wonderful! Thank you for a great read.

Amazing!. Novik captures you and entrances you in a world of magic and evil forests, making you hang on to her every word.

Beautiful story, Relatable Heroine You Want To Root For. I love the way the story is written, as though you’re an observer peeking in on this section of time. There are subtle threads of romance but the story is really about a woman coming into her own during a tough adventure. 10/10 would recommend!

Mary Sue loves to be abused. Mary Sue gets in an abusive relationship but wins over her abuser. I can’t remember the last time I hated a book so much I put it in the recycling rather than give it away. I thought the premise and setting were intriguing, but the story was just “problem appears, protagonist tries to solve it, everyone tells her it’s too dangerous, she solves it anyway” over and over again. Bad enough but just poor writing, but then the one person who is unrelentingly mean to her turns out to be the love of her life. Way to model strong self-sufficient behavior. The love story is flat-out offensive and the reason this went in the bin.

Sweeps you up immediately. I couldn’t put this book down. Wonderfully written prose combined with a fast-moving adventure. A pleasure to read. The descriptions are amazing. The story is unique and original.

Beautiful story!. Just finished reading Naomi Novik's latest novel, "Uprooted". It was so good! I think it's even better than her Temeraire novels. Uprooted is a gorgeous fairytale. I got completely wrapped up in the characters and the story.

Fairytale for grownups. Love good fairytale with a strong female character.

Can I return this?. The concept is interesting and that’s about as nice as I can say about it. The writing style is very frantic, making it difficult to read. The characters could have been flushed out a bit more, and the development was lacking. Romance should not have been on the table for the two main characters, because it didn’t fit. It was awkward and felt like it was thrown in there for fun. This could have been done so much better. I’m very disapointed i spent money on this.

Reads like a weird fan-fiction off of Reddit. I was really excited to read this book, but sadly the style, story, and suggestion of cuckolding, didn’t really jive with me. Definitely seems like some weird fetishy-tumbler-esque story.

Wonderful. I love this book. This has the action of a Mistborn novel mixed with the sweet humor of the Discworld. I can't wait to read this author's other works.

Horrors, Wonders, Magic, and… but that would be telling. Naomi Novik has taken tales from Polish mythology and crafted an engrossing world. It is a hero’s journey; the hero is a young woman - Agnieszka - coming into her own as she discovers her own powers and the responsibilities that go with them. Growing up with the ever present threat of The Wood, a source of malevolent magic, she is selected at age 17 to fulfill a tribute of 10 years of service to the powerful wizard whose task is to defend against it. She never expected to be chosen, nor did she know why she was - because the wizard realized she had magic ability of her own and needed to be trained. The title of the tale is “Uprooted” because that is a recurring theme throughout. Agnieszka is uprooted from all the expectations she had had growing up as a peasant, but as she progresses through the story, a comparable overturning happens to all who come in contact with her. Not least of all is the effect on her wizard mentor who finds both his understanding of magic and his own life overturned by her. And without giving away too much, the ultimate confrontation with the villain of the tale also defies expectations . Novik has crafted a fine story with rich characters living in a well-realized world. It is a wonderful stand-alone work. There are - so far - no sequels and no prequels, although there is plenty of potential for more stories from the world Novik has put together. Enjoy!

Great book. Loved it. Haven't read a story like it and it was unpredictable.

Expected More. I went into this book with high expectations, and sadly to say I was let down a bit. I’ll start with the positives first; I absolutely loved the world building and the writing. The descriptions of the Wood and how the characters interacted with it always left me uneasy; I felt as if I was there and struggling to understand it’s mysteries with the characters. I was completely immersed whenever I picked up reading this book, and could understand the scene the main character was describing. I enjoyed reading about the politics as well as the magic mechanics in this world, as they were completely different and unique to what I’ve read in the past. There was loads of ideas and thought put into creating this world and the magic system. To the negatives I have about this book, some of the characters were forgettable and the relationships were not well-developed. Agnieszka and Kasia as characters and their strong bond was lovely to read, while others were left to be desired. The Dragon/Sarkan, for example, never had any sort of character development and remained the same throughout the entire novel. He felt very bland and forgettable, while also being extremely rude to Agnieszka for no reason. Their romantic relationship had no development or build-up, I felt I had just been smacked across the face when the first the “romantic”scene occurred, because it came out of left field completely and made absolutely no sense. There was no chemistry or “playful” banter whatsoever, it was just Sarkan being overly cruel even after being saved multiple times by Agnieszka (never even said thank you??). I don’t understand what Agnieszka could ever see in him after how he treated her. I felt I would’ve been more satisfied if there had been no romance at all and more time was spent on developing characters. Overall, I did enjoy the book and I am glad to have finally read it. I just think it could’ve been greatly improved in certain areas.

Excellent book!. I received an early copy of this in exchange for an unbiased review. This book was fantastic! It was one that made me want to turn around and read it again right after I finished it. I enjoyed her Temeraire novels, but this one outshines them by far. You can see how her writing has matured. Like a lot of others have said, it has the feel of a fairy tale, but with atypical characters thrown into the mix. I loved the world that she created and the different ways that the magic worked. There were some really creative moments using the spellcasting. I believe that this is a stand alone novel, but I would like to read more set in this world.

Exquisite, but didn’t work for me. I had read a lot of discussions of this book before reading it and I wasn’t sure how that might affect my experience. In the end, not that much, I think. There were some aspects I was over-prepared for, some that I may have noticed more than I would have otherwise, but some of my strongest responses were to things I hadn’t remembered seeing discussed at all. This is a book with a fairy-tale feeling, but one of those dark, pre-bowdlerization Grimm’s Brothers tales, where the monsters succeed in eating people sometimes, and you’re as likely to find yourself dancing to death in red-hot shoes as you are marrying a prince. The feel of the setting is Eastern Europe, involving two rival nations whose names are easily recognizable as Poland and Russia. Baba Yaga makes a guest appearance in authorial absentia. And the Big Bad is the evil sentient wood, engaged in a constant struggle with the wizards of the kingdom for every contested acre of land. In all of this, a peasant girl is chosen to serve a dragon. Well, not really a dragon, but a wizard nicknamed The Dragon. And when a peasant girl like Agnieszka is chosen by a dragon, you pretty much know she’s got Chosen One written all over her. Except that it was her best friend Kasia who everyone knew was supposed to be chosen. The friendship and loyalty between Agnieszka and Kasia was one of the backbones of the story, and I was delighted that Kasia got her own heroine-tale just as much as Agnieszka did. This is, of course, a very traditional fantasy tale, so there is never any suggestion that the two brave and daring young women who are willing to die for each other might, you know, ever be more than friends. Because Agnieszka is marked out for a trope-ridden attraction-of-opposites romance with the man who spends the first third of the book being completely beastly to her for no evident reason except that she offends his sense of esthetics and proper order. I use the word “beastly” advisedly, because one of the tropes being invoked is Beauty and the Beast (except she isn’t beautiful). Another trope hangs on “men’s magic is logical and orderly and scientific, while women’s magic is chaotic and instinctual and unexpected.” And in the usual way of these tropes, the chaotic, instinctual women’s magic saves the day in the end. But before we get to that end, we have to suffer through a lot of people trying to solve problems by throwing large quantities of violence at them. It takes entirely too long for anyone to figure out that maybe a sentient wood might have genuine grievances and a valid right to push back against human incursions. The later part of the book includes something like a half-dozen-chapter stretch that describes thousands of people supposedly on the same side of the struggle finding ways to slaughter each other in vast numbers. I just...I don’t come to fantasy novels for battle-porn. I know some people do, but the sequence felt unnecessarily prolonged and simply downright unpleasant. I don't quite understand how any of the participants remain sane, functional human beings afterward. In the end, the Big Bad is solved by someone being willing to listen and empathize and find a kind solution. A pity it couldn’t happen before all those nice young men died and the kingdom was ripped apart. Now, all that being said, Uprooted is an exquisitely written book with astounding world-building. But I can't really say I found it a fun book to have read.

perfect. I picked up this book Saturday morning and then let the chores pile up the rest of the weekend. If you love a good story, you won’t be disappointed.

A Wonderful Surprise. Leery of the affordable price, I hesitated giving the sample a try until I saw a few positive reviews. I haven’t before read a novel by this author, and I’m extremely glad I chose to read this. I fell into the story quickly and easily, the characters are well developed, and the world-building was satisfyingly solid. It harkens back to the days of a wonderful story before bed. I am excited to see what else is written by Naomi Novik!

Literally was crying because it was over. I cant even begin to say what a wonderful and absorbing book this was. I was literally crying for a whole day because it was over and I wouldn’t get to read anymore about The Dragon and Nieschka, I can NOT recommend this enough

5 stars!!!. This book had me by the first chapter. I couldn't put it down!! It was very well written. I hope the author writes more books about Sarkan and Neishka. I didn't want the story to end. I highly recommend you download the sample and I promise you'll be hooked by the first chapter.

Uprooted. Totally enjoyed! Was sorry it ended. Though I understand why an author would end it this way, I was disappointed not to know more of how the main characters continued on.

I was happily lost in the wood for three days. So when this story first started I wasn't sure about it. Seemed a little clumsy and I wasn't sure where this was going. It didn't take long for the amazingness to start to flow and never let up. I snarfed down the story every chance I had for three days. It was worth the price and every moment it stole me from my day to day. The heroine is the stuff made of legends, and true to form, it was a spinning fairytale full of kings, princes, magic and creatures. (I took classes on folklore and fairytale in university) BRAVO.

Very good. Reminiscent of Robin McKinley at her best (Think *Sunshine*), this is a fairytale in media res, well crafted, well told, and well written.

Ensorceling. I loved the characters and the world of this story. It is a marvel on its own, but I now dream of another tale from this realm more than any other I've read.

A bit slow at first, but blossoms into a page-turner.. My rating system: 5 stars are reserved for books that totally blow me away, or classics that I believe would have when they were new. I don’t give too many of these out, because it’s the highest rating that you could ever possibly give any book on here. 4 stars for books that I would recommend to just about anyone, or, at least, to someone who doesn’t dislike the genre. 3 stars for books that I would only recommend to someone who is fond of the genre. 2 stars for books that I would be hesitant to recommend to anyone at all, but the book was not a total disaster. 1 star for books that I found so terribly ridiculous, or poorly written, that I wish I had not spent time reading to begin with.

Marvelously Magical. Naomi Novik fan girl here and when I got a chance to check out a new book I jumped at it...and boy was I thrilled I did. Uprooted is set in a mid-evil type village sitting on the boarder of a malevolent woods. The only thing holding the evil back is the “Dragon”, a wizard, that lives in a tower near the same woods. The cost for his services is a 17 year old girl from the village. Every 10 years the old girl is released at the age of 27 and a new girl is taken. Agnieszka is the town tomboy who has befriend the most beautiful girl in town...The girl everyone believes will become the next Dragon servant. But when Agnieszka is chosen instead, both their worlds are turned upside down. Agnieszka is a strong, fun and inventive young woman that you can't help but get behind. She has a heart of gold but spine made of steel. When the Dragon is called away to help another village, Agnieszka's own village comes under attack. Instead of withering away, she takes the wolves by the neck and faces the peril on her own; discovering that her captivity with the Dragon might lend to a greater life path where she can save her family and friends. The story is lengthy and as the mystery behind the woods unravels quite complicated but still manages to hold you riveted to the pages. I would love to delve deeper into this world but the ending for Uprooted did give us great closure. I found Uprooted to be a marvelously magical read. The story definitely had a classic fairy tale feel with the darker fantasy vibe. I would highly recommend Uprooted to all fantasy fans. I received this ARC copy of Uprooted by Random House - Del Rey in exchange for a honest review.

So well written. I hope very much so that this book is the beginning of a wonderful series!!! I am not even done yet and feel the need to leave a 5 star review. It is SO well written and has neon the toes at all times. Everything makes sense, falls into place and is captivating. ❤️

Fantastic. I really got attached to the characters.

Fast paced and fun. Loved it. If you’re a fantasy fan who likes dark fairy tale twists, this is the book for you.

Lovely lovely lovely. A grown up fairytale, beautifully and lushly written.

Was unable to finish. Not worth the hype... I lost interest half way through.... felt the story dragged.
