Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt Book Summary

A New York Times Bestseller!

The author of the beloved One for the Murphys gives readers an emotionally-charged, uplifting novel that will speak to anyone who’s ever thought there was something wrong with them because they didn’t fit in.

“Everybody is smart in different ways. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its life believing it is stupid.”

Ally has been smart enough to fool a lot of smart people. Every time she lands in a new school, she is able to hide her inability to read by creating clever yet disruptive distractions.  She is afraid to ask for help; after all, how can you cure dumb? However, her newest teacher Mr. Daniels sees the bright, creative kid underneath the trouble maker. With his help, Ally learns not to be so hard on herself and that dyslexia is nothing to be ashamed of. As her confidence grows, Ally feels free to be herself and the world starts opening up with possibilities. She discovers that there’s a lot more to her—and to everyone—than a label, and that great minds don’t always think alike.

I connected with Ally through the book through thick and thin! The friendship between Albert, Ally, and Keisha is beautiful and heart warming. Don’t even get me started on Mr. Daniels he is the best teacher EVER he is going to college to get a degree is teaching kids with special learning needs AND motivates and supports Ally in a way that is so kind!❤️ Overall, you HAVE to read this book and you will fall in love with it!!📚📕📚📚📚

One of my favorite realistic fiction reads so far!. The characters are relatable, the story is really good! Every chapter makes you want to turn the page. This was one of my 5th grade math teacher’s favorite books!

Such an amazing book!!. I love this book! It is so amazing, and I love how this shows Ally, and her troubles, and how she gets through them with her new friends. I would recommend this to anyone!! Ages 1-10000000000!! This book is soooo amazing!!! If you don’t like this, I will be shocked. But don’t take my word for it. Read it and get your opinion for yourself!!!!

BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️😍😍😍. This book was so amazing I literally started to worry that I was reading the book too fast and that it was going to end too soon.

Great 94/100. Well written book.

4 stars. It was a good book but it lacked good closure for me.

Great!!! But a suggestion. This book was amazing!!! I could not stop reading it. But what would be cool if there was another book when her dad comes home and how travis learns how to read. Just a suggestion! The book is awesome!!!!

MAKE A SEQUEL!!. Anyone who reads Fish in a Tree will totally enjoy from any age. Ally is a girl who has dyslexia, which leads her into her learning differences. Soon Mrs. Hall leaves after her pregnancy; Charming Mr. Daniels enters, and helps Ally pick up and tell her how smart she is. She learns that dyslexia means she’s smart, and some of the smartest people had dyslexia. Please make a sequel, Lynda Mullally Hunt. Tons of us want you too! I enjoyed this book, five stars it gets!!

Fish in a Tree. Great minds do not think alike. Can this simple truth resonate in a world where kids are pushed to achieve a narrow definition of success at every level, culminating in a degree from a prestigious university and a high flying career in a well-paying field? From standardized tests to AP placements to resumes padded with the appropriate sport/music/volunteer activities—if this is our definition of success then what about those who cannot or choose not to walk this narrow path? Lynda Mullaly Hunt introduces us to Ally, a breathtakingly brilliant visual learner whose undiagnosed dyslexia convinces her, and those around her, that she is stupid. Fish in a Tree is certainly not the first children’s book with a dyslexic protaganist, yet when Hunt describes how, for Ally, letters move and shimmer on paper like rebellious toddlers refusing to sit still, I finally could imagine what a struggle reading and writing can be. Like the best authors of any genre, Hunt puts the reader into the head and heart of Ally until we feel her pain when she is labelled a “dunce” and her exhiliration when a brilliant teacher helps her see a future full of the possible. Even beyond Ally, the characters in Fish in a Tree break free of convention and force readers to consider them in all their individual, messy glory. There are few who will close this book having not been moved to tears at some point. I am grateful we live in a world which can celebrate students like Ally, Albert, Keisha, and Oliver and teachers like Mr. Daniels. For my part, having known these characters through the pages of Fish in a Tree, I will place a far higher value on the unconventional thinkers and their ability to change our world.

AMAZING BOOK. Great book! I loved reading this on a bus or in a car this book is amazing

AWESOME 👏. This book was awesome and I really want to read it over and over and over and over and over again. If you read this I really hope you like this!!!

Fish in a Tree. I ADORE this book! I usually do like reading a lot but this book just really spoke to me. I have a friend who has dyslexia and she is one of my closest friends. I told her about this book and she started reading out loud more in Sunday school. The friendship between Ally, Keisha, and Albert is just phenomenal. I recommend this book!

I love it so much!. It is a great story and it teaches the reader about bullying and friends. It’s not made up or a fantasy, it’s life.

Best book!. This is the best book I have ever read! Brilliant!

OMG inspired my entire life to do somethin. I love this book soooo much!!!!!! It’s so cute and good for someone who is feeling down. Albert is “logically” the most amazing person in the world!!!! Keisha could probably bake something that would put a smile on any face!!!!! Ally is different! And I like that!!!! I hope that there is a movie for this book IT.WOULD.BE.AMAZING!!!!!. I recommend this book to anyone!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Great book. Very inspiring novel with a great story.

The Best Book I Have Ever Read. This book is the best book I've ever read. It is inspiring, and once you start reading it, you must finish it! I recommend this book for anyone who is struggling in school or going through a hard time. Because in the end you will realize that someone is going through a harder time than you are.

Fish in a tree. Fish in a tree was a beautiful story sad but beautiful

Good book. Good Too many cliches Generic Do not understand how some people got emotional over this Basic plot Cliches, stereotypical people

SO EMOTIONAL. Fish in a tree is very good!

Totally teachable text. Fish In A Tree provided my class with many catalysts for deep, meaningful discussions on tolerance, bullying, grit and learning differences. Although the text centres around Ally, the other characters are brought to life with enough detail to provide readers with an insight into what makes them tick. All in all, a fantastic story with plenty of teachable moments throughout. My Year 5 class loved this book.
