商子 by 商鞅 Book Summary
《商子》五卷,旧本题秦商鞅撰。鞅事迹具《史记》。鞅封于商,号商君,故《汉志》称《商君》二十九篇,《三国志•先主传注》,亦称《商君书》。其称《商子》,则自《隋志》始也。陈振孙《书录解题》云,《汉志》二十九篇,今二十八篇,已亡其一。晁公武《读书志》则云,本二十九篇,今亡者三篇。《读书志》成于绍兴二十一年,既云已阙三篇。《书录解题》成于宋末,乃反较晁本多二篇。殆两家所录,各据所见之本,故多寡不同欤。此本自更法至定分,目凡二十有六,似即晁氏之本。然其中第十六篇、第二十一篇又皆有录无书,则并非宋本之旧矣。《史记》称读鞅开塞书,在今本为第七篇,文义甚明。司马贞作《索隐》,乃妄为之解,为晁公武所讥。知其书唐代不甚行,故贞不及睹。又《文献通考》引周氏《涉笔》,以为鞅书多附会后事,疑取他词,非本所论著。然周氏特据文臆断,未能确证其非。今考《史记》,称秦孝公卒,太子立,公子虔之徒告鞅欲反,惠王乃车裂鞅以徇。则孝公卒后,鞅即逃死不暇,安得著书?如为平日所著,则必在孝公之世,又安得开卷第一篇即称孝公之谥?殆法家者流掇鞅余论,以成是编,犹管子卒于齐桓公前,而书中屡称桓公耳。诸子之书,如是者多。既不得撰者之主名,则亦姑从其旧,仍题所托之人矣。
