中国人有句俗话,说的是,穷算命,富烧香,这两句话,却也是描写俗态,一些不错。当见那些富的人,亦晓得自己的命,是比别人的好,终日里养尊处优,似乎没有别的想头,然而还怕的是美中不足,有的怕寿元不永的,有的怕子嗣空虚的,有的怕疾病纠缠的,有了这些心,心上亦是不十二分满足,所以终日除了饱食暖衣而外,没有别事,无非是东庙里烧香,西庙里许愿,总想神道得了他的香火,就像阳间里官府,得了打官司的使费一样,必定要偏袒他,保佑得他事事如意。那营营扰扰的光景,旁观的看着亦觉得可笑,然而他自己却是乐此不疲。所以这般富人的钱,大都是这些和尚得着的居多。试问那光景难的,可有这大把闲钱,去孝敬和尚么?还有一种穷的,他急急图谋的是衣食两字,每遇到极不堪的时候,便诿之于命,说人家是前世修来的,我的命运不如人罢咧。然而否极思泰,穷极思通的意思,也是人人有的。他又没有别的法子,不过把他生的年月日时,找着一个瞎子,金木水火土的推演一翻,几时交好运,几时出歹运,今天这个瞎子是这样说,明天那个瞎子又是那样说,有时竟被他碰着一两句,其实也不过是圣人所说的“是亦多言矣,岂不或中”,本没有甚希奇,那些被他算准的人,却就奉之如神明,再一连说对了几个,这位瞎先生,便从此出了名,一传十,十传百,百传干,恭维得他同半仙一样。这位瞎先生,亦就因势利导,抬高声价,所以这般穷人的钱,也有一大半葬送在这瞎子手里。
