Motive by Jonathan Kellerman Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Jonathan Kellerman writes razor-sharp novels that cut to the quick. Now comes Motive, which pits psychologist Alex Delaware and homicide cop Milo Sturgis against a vicious criminal mind—the kind only Kellerman can bring to chilling life.

Even having hundreds of closed cases to his credit can’t keep LAPD police lieutenant Milo Sturgis from agonizing over the crimes that don’t get solved—and the victims who go without justice. Victims like Katherine Hennepin, a young woman strangled and stabbed in her home. A single suspect with a solid alibi leads to a dead end—one even Alex Delaware’s expert insight can’t explain. The only thing to do is move on to the next murder case—because there’s always a next one.

This time the victim is Ursula Corey: a successful, attractive divorcée who’s been gunned down—not a robbery but an execution, a crime that smacks of simple, savage revenge. And along with that theoretical motive come two strong contenders for the role of perp: the dead woman’s business partner/ex-husband and her divorce lawyer/secret lover. But just as Alex and Milo think they’re zeroing in on the most likely suspect, a bizarre new clue stirs up eerie echoes of the unsolved Hennepin murder. And the discovery of yet another crime scene bearing the same taunting signature raises the specter of a serial killer on a mission, whose twisted method is exceeded only by his manipulative and cunning madness.

Praise for Motive

“Jonathan Kellerman has mastered the art of lean, evocative prose [in] a series that grows stronger with each volume.”—New York Journal of Books

“One of [Kellerman’s] best works to date . . . Motive is wonderfully made, equally well-driven by plot and character, and shouldn’t be missed.”—Bookreporter

“[Motive] will even keep genre veterans guessing. . . . The twists are both shocking and logical, and the byplay between the leads entertaining.”—Publishers Weekly

Praise for Jonathan Kellerman

“Jonathan Kellerman’s psychology skills and dark imagination are a potent literary mix.”—Los Angeles Times

“A master of the psychological thriller.”—People

“The combination of Alex Delaware [and] Detective Milo Sturgis . . . makes for the most original whodunit duo since Watson and Holmes.”—Forbes

Back to Best. The last 6-7 episodes in the love song of Sturgis and Delaware have been repetitive and lacking of originality. This novel returns the plot and characters to a top rating: original and unpredictable.

Motive. A good writer with interesting characters. After two consecutive disappointments from authors who decided to take on sidekicks writers a la James Patterson, it's good to be back with a winner. Now if James Lee Burke and Ian Rankin will just write another.

Poor story line! Not typical,. Story seemed to be reaching and desperate. Not A Delaware and Milo at their usual clever characters.

Kellerman books. always pretentious and boring. Guy simply can't stop writing and seems like there are plenty of idiots who pays... what a fake

Motive. I give up.....JK's books in this series have become so boring and dreadful....as if author is mailing it in......

Jane. Terrible, terrible book and I am a huge Kellerman fan!

Motive by Jonathan Kellerman. Not up to the usual standards; exceptionally boring.

Motive. I saved this book to relish while I sat with a loved one in the hospital. Walking the halls was more entertaining. Sad. I love Kellerman's earlier books but this was just boring. Maybe next time?

What a bore. Alex Delaware just gets more and more pretentious and boring. A talky waste of time.

So, so. I've probably read every Kellerman book. Theme is always the same: tough case to crack for 50% of book; then for next 25% a focus on a suspect; after that, the ending is when they deduce the real bad guy. Good enough read but predicable.

Amateurish. Worst Kellerman Book!. Book read like a story written by my writing-enthusiast 12-year old - very amateurish. The main characters are supposed to be smart, efficient, educated, and some of the best in their fields, but this book makes them sound like bumbling fools, jumping from one suspect to another quicker than the blink of an eye. I kept hoping the story would improve, but alas, the ending was just as anti-climactic. So disappointing!

Good book. First Kellerman book I have read. Took me a while to get into it but it turned out to be a pretty good book. Enjoyed it.

Still enjoy Alex & Milo, of course. This wasn't JK's very best, but it was a pretty good read. It held my interest and had a few good twists. I'll always enjoy Alex Delaware novels, for sentimental reasons if nothing else. Milo is still his 'flawed but fascinating' self. Alex is still with Robin (boo) & Milo still with Rick (yay). Peripheral characters were interesting too, especially the rich horse-loving daughters who flee & another daughter who is key... Oops, I'd better not spoil it!

What Was This?. Now I remember why I didn’t read this author for a few years. This book was pointless; I think the author explored all scenarios because he lacked direction and an ending.
