The Murderer's Daughter by Jonathan Kellerman Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Includes bonus material

From the creator of the acclaimed Alex Delaware series comes a tour de force standalone novel that illustrates perfectly why “Jonathan Kellerman has justly earned his reputation as a master of the psychological thriller” (People).

A brilliant, deeply dedicated psychologist, Grace Blades has a gift for treating troubled souls and tormented psyches—perhaps because she bears her own invisible scars: Only five years old when she witnessed her parents’ deaths in a bloody murder-suicide, Grace took refuge in her fierce intellect and found comfort in the loving couple who adopted her. But even as an adult with an accomplished professional life, Grace still has a dark, secret side. When her two worlds shockingly converge, Grace’s harrowing past returns with a vengeance.

Both Grace and her newest patient are stunned when they recognize each other from a recent encounter. Haunted by his bleak past, mild-mannered Andrew Toner is desperate for Grace’s renowned therapeutic expertise and more than willing to ignore their connection. And while Grace is tempted to explore his case, which seems to eerily echo her grim early years, she refuses—a decision she regrets when a homicide detective appears on her doorstep.

An evil she thought she’d outrun has reared its head again, but Grace fears that a police inquiry will expose her double life. Launching her own personal investigation leads her to a murderously manipulative foe, one whose warped craving for power forces Grace back into the chaos and madness she’d long ago fled.

Praise for The Murderer’s Daughter

“[A] taut thriller . . . with the richness and resonance of literary fiction.”—Washington Independent Review of Books

“A stunning page-turner with a truly fascinating femme fatale at its fast-beating heart . . . packed with ingenious, razor-sharp plotting, mesmerizing mind games and nail-biting suspense.”—Yorkshire Evening Post

“A tight, fast-paced narrative [with] a brilliant, kick-ass heroine.”—Library Journal

“Kellerman doesn’t let off-the-charts genius Grace become one-dimensional. Her backstory and challenge to fit in, even into adulthood, are an engaging part of this satisfying mystery, which, though billed as a stand-alone, could certainly make a spin-off series.”—Booklist

“An amazing tale of survival and adaptability in the face of neglect and murder.”—RT Book Reviews

Praise for Jonathan Kellerman

“Kellerman’s psychology skills and dark imagination are a potent literary mix.”—Los Angeles Times

“Kellerman doesn’t just write psychological thrillers—he owns the genre.”—Detroit Free Press

Best yet.Different from past Kellerman novels, and easily his best yet. A character you will identify with and feel an emotional connection with, that's not happened to me in his previous work. Hope we see more in this vein..Score: 5/5

Awful!Stupid, unbelievable characters and plot. So sorry to have wasted my time and money on this book. Won't bother reading any future books by this author..Score: 1/5

A new compelling character...I hate Jonathan Kellerman! For years I wait expectantly for the next Delaware and Milo adventure and what do I get? Grace Blades, another very cool, fully formed character who I will now wait for as well. Really enjoyed the adventure as well as the characters construction. Another in the pantheon that is mr. Kellerman's work. Really enjoyable just as I expect them to be. Can't wait for the next..Score: 5/5

The Murderers DaughterWow, this Jonathan Kellerman book was very different from what I expected. well written, but a real surprise....Score: 4/5

Disappointing .....Kelleman is my absolute favorite author- and I love how he generally "ties" up the story line well.... But this time he did not. I found the ending disappointing and though their was the "mystery in progress" throughout the book- not just the who but the why- it was not wrapped up that way. Felt very disappointed. Also- I found Grace the main character to be a bit annoying and obnoxious..Score: 3/5

Murderer's DaughterWow! Good book! Kellerman is back. I enjoyed every page. Please write another "Grace" story..Score: 5/5

The Murderer's DaughterI am sorry. This was just a really slow read. Far too much time spent by the main character on the internet researching the identities and locations of people she was seeking (together with unrealistically good success in locating everyone quickly). Some good descriptive writing, but too slow for my taste..Score: 3/5

Don't waste your money!A shockingly bad effort. It's like he got a teenager to write it and then put his name on it. Such a disappointment..Score: 1/5

Not amazing but pretty goodI really liked the main character but found the ending to be anti-climactic. Also, the author adds irrelevant details throughout the story that I found irritating and distracting. A little slow to start but I guess it was okay..Score: 3/5

Poor Undeveloped StoryThis was so awful where do I begin? Maybe this was intended for real estate developers or maybe the author was reminiscing about his younger life but his intention was surely not on the plot. There is no credible explanation for why Grace killed three people. The hunt for her never continued which would have been believable. This really made no sense. It felt like the book was brought together from two books; even the page numbering was odd. I see that there is a prequel. Perhaps this book should be rethought then rewritten. What a stinker. At least the author provided good character development.Score: 1/5

TDAnother touchdown. I love this new character. Her story and emotional detachment offer great duality. Killer an builds the story with glimpses throughout her life. Grace's dark side makes the book worthwhile. The story is a somewhat predictable but the writing made me continue reading..Score: 5/5

Just not logicalA totally irrational plot that just wasn't engaging. A disappointment from beginning to end. I'm a therapist, but I'll take off and pretend I'm a detective, oh and a martial arts specialist and a sharp shooter, vigilante, genius, murderer. The only believable bits were the detailed geographic references to LA's city streets. Yawn..Score: 2/5

The Murderer's DaughterInteresting plot and well developed characters. A crummy ending made the overall story disappointing.Score: 3/5

A Scary-Good StoryA scary-good story that parallels episodes of young Grace and mature Grace to create a thriller that doesn't stop. The story involves more than one psychopathic killer and the impact of childhood trauma on the lives of the adults. while the story involves sex and violence, they are handled with clear and succinct descriptions that are oriented to inform rather than titillate. The book provides outstanding examples of the best and worst of human nature, with a conclusion that is ultimately satisfying. This thriller is well worth several reads..Score: 5/5

Don't botherThe book starts out strong with a storyline that draws you in, but the remainder of the book is filled with unnecessary details about Grace's life that could have been summed up in a much shorter fashion. The ending is very abrupt and left me wanting more, feeling as if I didn't really get the answers to the questions that I wanted. I give the book two stars only because I felt it could really have potential, but in the end it just came up short. Very disappointing..Score: 2/5

Somertime10I originally liked how it kept changing between present and past, but the past story had no big reveal at the end, which was a big disappointment. Also, the ending was rushed. I felt like they just wanted to hurry up and end it. The book seemed like it was working up to this amazing ending and then it totally fell flat. The middle kind of dragged along as well.
