At the Water's Edge by Sara Gruen Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this thrilling new novel from the author of Water for Elephants, Sara Gruen again demonstrates her talent for creating spellbinding period pieces. At the Water’s Edge is a gripping and poignant love story about a privileged young woman’s awakening as she experiences the devastation of World War II in a tiny village in the Scottish Highlands.

After disgracing themselves at a high society New Year’s Eve party in Philadelphia in 1944, Madeline Hyde and her husband, Ellis, are cut off financially by his father, a former army colonel who is already ashamed of his son’s inability to serve in the war. When Ellis and his best friend, Hank, decide that the only way to regain the Colonel’s favor is to succeed where the Colonel very publicly failed—by hunting down the famous Loch Ness monster—Maddie reluctantly follows them across the Atlantic, leaving her sheltered world behind.

The trio find themselves in a remote village in the Scottish Highlands, where the locals have nothing but contempt for the privileged interlopers. Maddie is left on her own at the isolated inn, where food is rationed, fuel is scarce, and a knock from the postman can bring tragic news. Yet she finds herself falling in love with the stark beauty and subtle magic of the Scottish countryside. Gradually she comes to know the villagers, and the friendships she forms with two young women open her up to a larger world than she knew existed. Maddie begins to see that nothing is as it first appears: the values she holds dear prove unsustainable, and monsters lurk where they are least expected.

As she embraces a fuller sense of who she might be, Maddie becomes aware not only of the dark forces around her, but of life’s beauty and surprising possibilities.

Disappointing. Trite. Predictable. Sophomoric.

Well done!. The premise of World War II and the Loc Ness monster didn't interest me but I'm so glad I read the sample! Engaging characters and development, unexpected twists and just rewards. Loved it!

Great Read. I’m glad I came across this book, it was a fun and easy read. The story unfolds as the main character starts to learn a lot about herself and those around her. The love story is what really took me by surprise, and a good one at that. Highly recommend it, it’ll stick with you.

At the Water's Edge. Excellent read. Very believable characters. Once I got reading it I could not put it down.

The Water’s Edge. A wonderful summer read. Spoiled rich girl learns life lessons from hard working man who turns out to be rich. Setting this love story in a different time and place made the story more interesting.

Modern day, somewhat dark fairy tale. Poor little rich girl with shades of tragedy and wartime deprivation. A little sex and romance thrown in. Does hold water to Water for Elephants...

Entertaining and draws you in. It took a while to get going but the plot and particularly the Scottish characters are wonderfully done. Great little read!

Excellent book. I was not sure at first if I liked this book but as the characters and plot developed I got drawn in and didn’t want to put it down.

Wonderful. I am so happy I stumbled across this book. I'm surprised I liked it so much since it dealt with sea creatures! Please do yourself a favor and read this book!

Engrossing read...couldn’t put it down..read it til 2:30 in the morning. Also enjoyed Water For Elephants

Not in the same league as Water for Elephants. This book was pleasant and easy to read but not especially memorable.

At the Water's Edge. After reading Water for Elephants, I didn't think Sara Gruen enthrall me again. However, she did. This novel was rare for me in that it took me many chapters to become completely engrossed. Her characterization are vivid, and, in each, character the reader will recognize someone he or she knows. Although Gruen acknowledges historical deviations, I loved the historical aspects of this page-turner novel.

Exceptional. Beautifully written, wonderful characters, and a great story.

At The Water’s Edge is a calm and elegant whirlwind. I never saw Water for Elephants, I never read it, but it would have been impossible not to know about it. Between the hype of Robert Pattinson attached as the lead actor and the occurrence of the book on multiple reading list I have seen Water for Elephants pop up a few times. When I saw this title come across my search on Netgalley, I knew that I wanted to read it. I wanted to read something different than what I normally read and I wanted to take the chance on Sara Gruen and her newest title At the Water’s Edge. The story has a slow pace or perhaps it was just a slow relaxation, the book took me multiple days to fully consume. It was not out of boredom, the story is beautifully written, but it was more the sense that this book was not meant to be devoured quickly but rather it was meant to be read slowly and give a sense of relaxation amongst the lives of these anything but relaxed characters. Maddie is in the center of everything and slowly she starts to realize not all is as it seems. At The Water’s Edge is a calm and elegant whirlwind and Maddie is the eye watching the madness around her take place. She is a quiet woman who is realizing not everything is at it seems. The life she was leading is so very different then the life she finds herself in now. She questions the way she thought that life should be and begins to form relationships that are built on the harsh realities of life rather then the status of ones family. Maddie is a young woman who is thrown into an unfavorable situation to realize she knows so very little about life but has the opportunity to learn so very much.

Hard to put down. A story that's engaging and thrilling. I found myself swept up in each character's storyline as if they were real people, friends whose well being was as important as my own. I also loved the backdrop of the history and culture from one of my very favorite countries: Scotland. It was hard to put down and I ended up finishing the book in less than 3 days.

Predictable. Gruen's story was enthralling at first. However, it became so predictable that I finished by skimming it. I was most disappointed that she had to follow a formula.

At theWater’s Edge. I enjoyed this novel toughly, I couldn’t put itdown. When my husband wanted to know when we were having dinner I would cringe.I read under my sheet at night so he wouldn’t see my I-pad light. I love to read and I can’t wait to read your next Novel. Margaret M. Hawkins

At the Water' Edge. A disappointing read from a usually talented writer. These characters grated my nerves with their pettiness and self serving pranks. The romance was overly dramatic and the writing stilted.

My favourite book.. This book captured me from the very beginning. I couldn’t put it down. I read it now every year. I’m not sure what captured my heart so much about this honest. I just fell in love with the characters. I wish this one would become a movie just like book not leaving anything out. My only complaint is that it’s just not long enough.

Waste of time and money. Having read and enjoyed Water for elephants years ago, I was looking forward to reading this book. The entire book which of course includes plot, all storylines and all characters was totally absurd and unbelievable. Halfway through the book, it turns into a romance novel. The protagonist seemed to have the IQ of a turnip. Unbelievable waste of time and money.

At the Water's Edge. While the beautiful story had me rushing to turn the pages, I was well aware that I was going to feel so depressed when I completed the book.
