In Order to Live by Yeonmi Park & Maryanne Vollers Book Summary

“I am most grateful for two things: that I was born in North Korea, and that I escaped from North Korea.” - Yeonmi Park

"One of the most harrowing stories I have ever heard - and one of the most inspiring." - The Bookseller

“Park's remarkable and inspiring story shines a light on a country whose inhabitants live in misery beyond comprehension. Park's important memoir showcases the strength of the human spirit and one young woman's incredible determination to never be hungry again.” —Publishers Weekly

In In Order to Live, Yeonmi Park shines a light not just into the darkest corners of life in North Korea, describing the deprivation and deception she endured and which millions of North Korean people continue to endure to this day, but also onto her own most painful and difficult memories. She tells with bravery and dignity for the first time the story of how she and her mother were betrayed and sold into sexual slavery in China and forced to suffer terrible psychological and physical hardship before they finally made their way to Seoul, South Korea—and to freedom.

Park confronts her past with a startling resilience. In spite of everything, she has never stopped being proud of where she is from, and never stopped striving for a better life. Indeed, today she is a human rights activist working determinedly to bring attention to the oppression taking place in her home country. Park’s testimony is heartbreaking and unimaginable, but never without hope. This is the human spirit at its most indomitable.

Amazing young woman. This young lady’s resilience and tenacity are astounding. It’s hard to imagine that our youth in America are slipping towards the type of government that she escaped. Bless Her.

Inspiring read!. Couldn’t put it down! Amazing story told very well.

Exposé and memoir - wonderfully written. Excellent, detailed story that exposes the brutal, corrupt North Korean regime and demonstrates the human capacity for survival. A must read.

Amazing read. Enjoyed the book and learning about Yeonmi’s struggle for freedom from North Korea.. but the book ended so abruptly that I had to double check it was actually finished

Incredible book, incredible author. I couldn’t put it down.. Even though I recently read A Girl With Seven Names I learned even more about the horrors of North Korea and China from this author. Anyone who cares about democracy and freedom must read both of these books.

Incredible. I’ve never been one for autobiographies, but I think the reason I loved this one is because of the story. The life the author endured is so unreal that it’s hard to grasp that I’m not reading a fiction book. Had me in tears every chapter.

Amazing. This book had me from the first page. How a human being can endure what this young lady went through is beyond anything I can fathom. I would love to meet her some day and tell her in person what an awesome person she is.

Fascinating. An inspiring tale that had me attached to every page I am truly inspired and will recommend this book to everyone I know

An easy read. A very easy read about a very hard facts of life on this planet. Simple language of a complicated story. Quiet voice of a powerful spirit. Thank you for being so brave.

Eye opening. Beautiful and shocking book. I feel like my heart and eyes were opened in a new way, by reading this book.

Extraordinary. A “MUST” read…. Covid restrictions in USA pale by comparison to life in NoKo. Well written. Best book I’ve read over past years.

Amazing book. Must read if you think you know about North Korea.

Heartbreaking and breathtaking story. The horrifying scenes depicted in this book was truly disheartening to imagine. Her story will reach millions of hearts and lift up many sinking souls. Thank you Yeonmi for the story even though by writing it down you had to relive through the unbearable pains. Hope humanity can reach the darkest corner in the world one day.

Incredible. Gripping and powerful. The bravery, resiliency and strength of the author is truly inspiring. She tells an incredible story that opens the readers eyes to the evilness and inhumanity that exists in this world. Her story helps to give perspective on what it really means to struggle and it is both humbling and inspiring.

Adiamond. This is a must read! It’s an exceptional story of escape and survival from North Korea

Steve Segal. Touching story and high praise to Yeonmi Park for her strength and determination to better her self. On the negative side, her writing style leaves the reader with the impression that Yeonmi had a very smug and high opinion of herself.

Unbelievable. This story is simultaneously the most tragic and the most hopeful story I’ve ever read. I have no words. I can only hope that things will get better for North Korean citizens and for Yeonmi and her family.

In Order to Live. Excellent.

Why do I all of a sudden…. Feel like I’ve taken a small trip to NK? Through Yeonmi’s writing, I now have a refined perspective on this world.

Thankful. It is amazing that another human’s story can make you feel such compassion and give you an overwhelming sense of gratitude and love for the life you have been given. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Must read!. This book has opened my eyes to life in North Korea. My heart goes out to all who live there and escaped. I can't imagine how you feel! This book is a must-read to open your eyes and your heart. I simply can not put into words how much pain I feel for you and your family but how thankful that your sister is back and that you are all doing well and healing. Sending you and all defectors love and strength!

Wow. This story is humbling, shocking and terrifying. Everyone should read this story and be aware of what life is like in North Korea.

Essential Reading for All who Love Justice. So informative and impactful. Teachers, parents, professors and all Americans (and even anti -Americans) deserve to know the truth about human trafficking and other atrocities in China, N. Korea and other inhumane totalitarian states.

Empowering. Thank you for sharing your story so honestly. I will talk about this book for the rest of my life.

In Order To Live. This was a highly interesting yet heartbreaking story of a true account of a young girl growing up in North Korea & her eventual escape.

Stranger than fiction. Yeonmi’s plight to escape from one back situation to another is so incredible that Hollywood could write something this good, it made me cry 😢 I look forward to reading her next book which is to be released on Valentine’s Day.

Beautiful. Such an important story.

No words. No words, just tears. 5 stars.

I couldn’t put it down. So well written and easy to understand, I read it and knew that I was blessed to be me and that I have untapped resources to help others. I am in awe that I’m witnessing a human rights activist on her journey to help humans on a grand scale. Gotta shout out to Joe Rogan for shouting out Yeonmi Park!

Very impactful!. Definitely a must read! Wishing Yeonmi and her family the very best. 💕

Eye Opening.. An extraordinary memoir of survival over brutal conditions over which she had no control. She wouldn’t succumb in the face of grave danger and that’s what this story is really about. I highly recommend this book to freedom loving people and to those with “first world problems”who have no idea that conditions like this still exist in the 21st century.

A wild tornado of emotions. I always though my life in america sucked because of the discrimination I faced. I am Jewish not to mention gay. So, it’s hard to be in this world when people constantly want you dead. I’m a picky eater because of texture since I also have adhd. After reading only half of this book I began to feel guilty for being so picky. After reading this book I have completely new outlook on life. I’m more grateful for my food, I feel guilty for being picky when this girl didn’t even have rice at one point and was eating bugs on hill to survie. Knowing what she went through and her writing about this was brave and I hope you get to write that personal letter to that fat jerk that he can no longer control you, he’s not a mind reader and hope to god, god takes care of him. I loved this book and highly recommend if you are feeling lost and don’t know if you should be happy by reading this book you’ll figure it out quickly. The ending by the way I was literally jumping up and down in joy about your sister, I’m so happy she’s safe!!!

Interesting.. I finished your book. Thanks for sharing.

Incredible story. Incredible story of a strong woman. Inspires me to do better. If anyone is going through hardships, spend some time on this quick and impactful read.

Amazing!. This is such a heartbreaking story with many blessings throughout. She is an extraordinary person. I highly recommend it.

Amazing. This is an amazing book I believe everybody should read. It was really eye opening for me, highly recommend.

Yeonmi did a great job! It’s a must read!. Not only does she cover her escape from North Korea, she went into other sectors of North Korea that we outsiders normally wouldn’t have access to, like concentration camps, and lifestyle.

Amazing!. I read this book in a single day, it’s that good.

In Order to Live. Couldn’t put it down, and I’m not a big reader

Must read for everyone. I’m honestly without words. Amazing courage and amazing desire to live.

Incredible read.. Couldn’t put it down! Captivating and puts life in perspective. Hard to believe what some people go through.

Life-changing. I decided to read this book because I watched an interview video featuring Yeonmi Park. I was amazed by the pieces of her story in the film, so I decided I would read her autobiography. This book has changed my view of North Korea; I went from knowing almost nothing about it to having a much deeper understanding of what it is like there. It also broadened my view of China and South Korea, though less dramatically. I was in awe throughout the novel because of Yeonmi’s story, the terrible things that she overcame, and her passion for helping others despite what it may cost her. Her story is very inspiring, and I truly think that it is something everyone should read.

A must read. Emotional and revealing. An important book everyone should read and understand.

Couldn’t put it down. Incredible story makes you grateful to be born in America

Moving. This was a very moving book. Highly recommend.

Excellent excellent read. Such a well written and heart wrenching story of her life……so much respect for this woman and definitely for her mother and sister as well I pray God frees North Korea

Amazing Korean Woman. What a dark and bright story. Read the book.

powerful, eye-opening story. incredible story of escape and hardship, and i learned so much about north korea along the way. best book i’ve read in a long time. she is so strong

Wow!. This book has changed the way I look at my civil rights and freedom! Most people in the West have know idea how good they have it. Don't know how many times I said "wow" while I reading this book! This is a must read!

Page Turner. Could not put it down. Great book.

Amazing book. I don’t read books often. Glad I decided to get this one. Great book, will read this one from time to time

Yeonmi is a warrior. Unbelievable story of a life I cannot even fathom. Reading Yeonmi’s story is humbling. It’s makes me grateful for the blessings I was born into, but breaks my heart knowing these events are still taking place in 2020. She is an incredible woman with an incredible story to tell.

Insight. The greatest insight is to hear and listen to the words of someone who has the experience. I did not know much of North Korea before reading this book, but now I have a much greater concept of the difficulties native North Koreans face, even outside of their home country.

This book gives a gift .... Yeonmi , I know you’ll never see this ... I have to say though your book gave me back a part of me . My Perspective . I cannot believe that after nearly 70 years , this is all still allowed to go on . Readers , you will be taken on a heartrending and soul harrowing journey that will feel like sandpaper on your heart. At times I did though catch myself giggling and not sure if I should . (* the moment in the bathroom in China involving a scented object , her mom giggling under the blanket in South Korea . I also kept wondering why this is let to continue. I wam only able to think that the answer is again power and money . What happened to these heroic and resilient women should never happen ... to anyone . The poop section made me wonder how no one Caught anything . I just recently stumbled on video of a high ranking soldier , her family is extraordinarily lucky , because the video was horrifying . Let’s just say large parasites. There are so many moments here I was literally clenching any part I could from anger and terror ... and others that felt oddly familiar... that strange not unfamiliar survival instinct . At all costs to escape , to live. This book is a not to be missed horrific account of human survival from the perspective of a very young girl and her mother and sister . It’s a rarity in our time and that says something About North Korea or Publishing around the world ... I know there are more of these out there ... why haven’t we seen them publishers ? So I ask you all , take this young girls place as she immerses you in the darkest country on earth (* google that picture ) and walks you through the streets of despair , of terror, of guilt , of survival instinct at its most primal . You will not be the same person after , and you will have insight into what’s being still allowed over there ...

Absolutely incredible. Maybe the most incredible story I’ve ever read.

Wow. Simply the most inspirational book I have ever read
