Son oeuvre singulière est tout entière modelée sur sa vie intérieure, sur le spleen qui l'accompagne depuis sa jeunesse, après la mort de son frère David, le préféré de leur mère. Au delà du drame personnel de l'écrivain, ce récit nous fait partager ses nombreuses rencontres avec les personnalités littéraires et politiques anglaises de l'époque, mais également ses joies d'éternel enfant en compagnie des cinq fils de son amie, la belle Sylvia, pour lesquels il crée un jour, au détour de l'allée d'un parc, un petit être faunesque qu'il baptise Peter Pan...
