Bridgerton by Julia Quinn Book Summary

A #1 New York Times Bestseller

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn comes the story of Daphne Bridgerton, in the first of her beloved Regency-set novels featuring the charming, powerful Bridgerton family, now a series created by Shondaland for Netflix.

In the ballrooms and drawing rooms of Regency London, rules abound. From their earliest days, children of aristocrats learn how to address an earl and curtsey before a prince—while other dictates of the ton are unspoken yet universally understood. A proper duke should be imperious and aloof. A young, marriageable lady should be amiable…but not too amiable.

Daphne Bridgerton has always failed at the latter. The fourth of eight siblings in her close-knit family, she has formed friendships with the most eligible young men in London. Everyone likes Daphne for her kindness and wit. But no one truly desires her. She is simply too deuced honest for that, too unwilling to play the romantic games that captivate gentlemen.

Amiability is not a characteristic shared by Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings. Recently returned to England from abroad, he intends to shun both marriage and society—just as his callous father shunned Simon throughout his painful childhood. Yet an encounter with his best friend’s sister offers another option. If Daphne agrees to a fake courtship, Simon can deter the mamas who parade their daughters before him. Daphne, meanwhile, will see her prospects and her reputation soar.

The plan works like a charm—at first. But amid the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London’s elite, there is only one certainty: love ignores every rule...

This novel includes the 2nd epilogue, a peek at the story after the story.

Bridgerton (Julia Quinn) Book Reviews

Wonderfully fluffyYea, I jumped on the Bridgerton train. And you know what?! I have no regrets! It was so good, so fluffy, and made me super happy. I absolutely cannot wait for the next installments so I can gobble up the tv series as well!.Score: 4/5

EnjoyableSo I had no idea this was a book series. All my friends were going crazy for the Netflix series, so I decided to watch it. And then found out about the books after I’d finished it. I hate that the show spoiled some things for me. (Obviously I will not mention the spoilers). However that being said I did enjoy this book immensely. I smiled frequently and sometimes laughed through a fair amount of it. It was an easy ready, and written quite nicely. The few steamy scenes were not as detailed as I am used to in other novels and honestly it was refreshing. I can’t wait to read the next. The reason I only gave it 4 stars was for the scene with the consent issue. I knew it was coming, I was unhappy with it in the show and I was unhappy with it in the book. At the end of the day consent is not something to make light of, and it can be given or taken by all genders. It definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. I’m going to read the next book and hopefully find that the author redeems themselves..Score: 4/5

Not as complex or as fun as the showThe plot is hyper-focused on Daphne and Simon and lacks the drama of the show. If you watched the show first and came to read the book hoping for an Outlander-esque world that is more detailed than the show you watched - you will be disappointed. The romance scenes are great but without any world building or other well rounded characters it falls flat. I was speeding through and by the end and found the epilogue strange and unnecessary. The characters are so vibrant in the beginning it is easy to see why it was adapted and the plot filled out by Shondaland..Score: 2/5

300 pages too longIt perplexes me that authors and publishers alike are content to stretch out books to the point where it’s the literary equivalent of watery lemonade. Every chapter read like the one before it and it feels less like a romance than a costly lesson in patience for the reader. The writing is solid but I wish the plot had more meat on its dreadfully scrawny frame..Score: 3/5

Great bonesA fun and excellent Romance novel. For fans of the Netflix show, coming to this second makes you realize how wonderful the writers at Shondaland are; they’ve taken the whole scope of the book SERIES and stitched them together to become a vastly more compelling and engaging TV show. Clever, Exciting, & Can’t Put Down!I wanted to start this reading because of how trending the Netflix show was getting, and I am SO glad I decided to read this first. The story is so easy to follow along, the writing is clever and the dynamics between the characters is interesting. There are a few -steamy/romantic- scenes and SEVERAL beautifully written expressions of love. It’s somewhat like Jane Austen meets 50SoG (less detailed). For this to be a regency era novel type, I was pleased for it to be an easy-read and understand the events. Can’t wait to read the rest! My only “critique” would be that I didn’t prefer a few intense scenes, but understand why they were there for the plot. I’d give 4.5/5 rating if I could!.Score: 4/5

Read but don’t re-readI really enjoyed this book in some ways and was profoundly uncomfortable with it in others. I thought that the writing and plotting were uncommonly good and the character development was excellent. Simon in particular felt like a breath of fresh air, considering this genre seems to be dominated by rakes (even though the characters insist on calling him a rake for the first part of the book, despite not displaying any rakish behaviour) and it was good to see the hero acknowledge past trauma in a way that I haven't previously seen. All of this would have been enough for me to give The Duke and I five stars. Perhaps my discomfort is rooted in some sort of double standard; while I gleefully read and re-read Anne Stuart's Rohan books, which tend to have a pretty loose relationship with consent, I found the scene where Daphne attempts to inseminate herself against Simon's explicit wish to be profoundly wrong. Perhaps it's because unlike in the Rohan books and their rakeish ilk, in which the relationship is in no way presented as ideal, The Duke and I seems to want to present a healthy and loving relationship in which both partners are equally respected. That Daphne's actions are not treated as, at the very least, a profound lack of respect for her husband's wishes and that she should not understand them to be such was less than appealing to me, while the fact that the book's conclusion seems to suggest that her actions were justified is profoundly uncomfortable. I'll probably read more of the Bridgerton books, because there was much to be impressed by, but this definitely won't be one I'll revisit..Score: 3/5

Badly written; watch the TV series insteadThe TV series was better – don’t waste your time on the novel. Poorly written and poorly characterised, far too dialogue-heavy (with dialogue that is nowhere near as interesting or witty as it pretends to be) and with a plot that isn’t very interesting either – not to mention Daphne rapes her husband when he’s drunk and somehow it’s all his fault??? The book is also very historically inaccurate; it reads like modern-day American characters set in a Britain that claims to be the Regency Era but isn’t, and feels too American for it to be so. Also some of the language is far too much modern American English to make this a convincing English historical novel, e.g. at one point the author writes that Simon “sits on his fanny” which to a British reader is confusing as over here “fanny” means “vagina”, rather than “bottom”. And I don’t think the term “trousseau” appeared in the English language until the mid-1800s – which is after the Regency period. On the flip side, it’s encouraging to know that anyone can write a novel and have it sell, so we should all thank the author for that. But if you want a decent Regency romance, read some Jane Austen or Georgette Heyer instead..Score: 1/5
