Saturn Run by John Sandford & Ctein Book Summary

“Fans of Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers will eat this up.” --Stephen King

For fans of THE MARTIAN, an extraordinary new thriller of the future from #1 New York Times–bestselling and Pulitzer Prize–winning author John Sandford and internationally known photo-artist and science fiction aficionado Ctein.

Over the course of thirty-seven books, John Sandford has proven time and again his unmatchable talents for electrifying plots, rich characters, sly wit, and razor-sharp dialogue. Now, in collaboration with Ctein, he proves it all once more, in a stunning new thriller, a story as audacious as it is deeply satisfying.

The year is 2066. A Caltech intern inadvertently notices an anomaly from a space telescope—something is approaching Saturn, and decelerating. Space objects don’t decelerate. Spaceships do.

A flurry of top-level government meetings produces the inescapable conclusion: Whatever built that ship is at least one hundred years ahead in hard and soft technology, and whoever can get their hands on it exclusively and bring it back will have an advantage so large, no other nation can compete. A conclusion the Chinese definitely agree with when they find out.

The race is on, and an remarkable adventure begins—an epic tale of courage, treachery, resourcefulness, secrets, surprises, and astonishing human and technological discovery, as the members of a hastily thrown-together crew find their strength and wits tested against adversaries both of this earth and beyond. What happens is nothing like you expect—and everything you could want from one of the world’s greatest masters of suspense.

Good Hard Science Fiction. This was a great read. It was an entertaiing story with interesting characters and plausible science. The book combines the wonder of first contact with the tension of a superpower conflict. I hope the authors partner again because I want to read more from these two.

A great sf experiment. Thanks to this team for the hard work of bringing interplanetary travel to life. I'm no scientist, and I found a few early chapters a bit of a slog, but the end result was rewarding. The alien space station in Saturn orbit is definitely a WOW! The ending of the book is a bit too lazy, standard John Sanford political mashup, but that's a small price to pay for the ride! Do it again guys!

And A. C. Doyle Didn't Write Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea...for a reason.. A bad cost-benefit ratio in terms of reading time-enjoyment. Way too much text is devoted to science and too little to plot. That the science would satisfy the engineers of various fields holds little merit for the average reader, who is completely willing to accept "wantum mechanics" that allow the action to move along at a brisk pace. I would venture to guess that this is a big reason there are numerous Star Trek-Star Wars movies, and only one "The Martian." However, as Mr. Sandford has provided me with hundreds of hours of enjoyment by relating the experiences of Lucas Davenport, Virgil Flowers, Kidd, et al, I'm willing to let this indulgence slide. Just don't do it again.

Great read. Well written and very enjoyable.

Grest idea. Wonderful story idea. Fine speculative fiction, but, alas, complete misfire with regard to the conclusion.

Misleading. I was looking for a book dealing with a "first contact scenario", and all I got was "rocket science". There was little discussion on alien technologies , just rocket science.

Couldn’t put it down.. Great read. Right mix of action, humanity, politics, and science.

Good read.. Especially after playing Kerbal Space Program, I loved the hard science. Character development was very good. I dropped a star because the actual alien interaction was disappointing.

Good scifi. One of the better stories I have read in a while.

'Saturn-Kohn Sanford. Cant read book that I pre- purchased because it says the book cannot be opened . It was not formatted for IOS 9!!! Please fix!!!! Or credit my account!! R. Franklin

Great! Sci-fi at its best.. Heinlein would have loved it.

Believable. This is a great science fiction book that reads like it is entirely feasible and is a fun adventure for all, even non science fiction fans.

Saturn Run. Excellent read! Robert H and Isaac A are standing up on their gravestones cheering! No muskie fishing on Saturn but plenty of water!

Saturn Run. Very disappointing. If I had known this was basically a Barry Stein (Ctein) novel I would not have bought it. Bring back Lucas Davenport and friends! And how do you allow an author to review his own book and then make it the 1st review?

Saturn Run. Waste.

Hugo Award Candidate!. If you like (and miss) good HARD science fiction with a detailed, plausible and technical narrative, this one is for you. Good character development, dialogue and plot. The only thing I found a bit wanting and preventing a five star rating was the ending.

Sadly disappointing. Although I applaud the author(s) for keeping it realistic, I feel it was a waste of 14 bucks for this iBook. Way too much scientific jargon and explanation, and not nearly enough action or suspense. I am an avid fan of John Sanford, but this book was a trial to get through. I suppose even the great ones have a dud now and then. Maybe if I were a rocket scientist or an engineer, this novel would have been worth my time and money.

Good book. Great sympathetic characters when one character died and the crew had a memorial, I cried. Very believable science and plot.

Fantastic--couldn't put it down. I'm a nobody. What I think about anything, no one should care. Knowing that, this is the best read of the year for me. I couldn't put it down.

Decent story - plausible tech - interesting ideas of first contact. I thought the hook for the story was simple, effective and made sense...that a decelerating object was spotted entering Saturn orbit...and immediately it was scientifically known it could only be an alien spacecraft of unknown origin. The characters were interesting & developed pretty well. I doubt the folks in China will like the staging of the politics and attitudes of the Chinese characters in the story...lol... A good read overall... I felt more diagrams might have been appreciated...to help visualize the two spacecraft better and the science and physics concepts of the story.

Correction of misinformation. Apologies for jumping in. I feel an author should not argue with readers, who are entirely entitled to feel however they do about a book. I am, of course, disappointed bobsa didn't enjoy our book, but that's his right. I'm posting because of the need to correct wrong information. Bobsa seems to think I am someone named "Barry Stein." Until his review, I'd never heard of Barry Stein. My name, my full and legal name, really is Ctein. I don't write under any pseudonyms. I am highly Googleable. I also apologize for starring our own book, but I couldn't figure out any way to post this without stars, so I gave it the average rating on other sites. Hopefully this will only minimally distort the legitimate results. That's all. I return you to the program in progress. Ctein

Great collaboration. John Sandford has a knack for producing believable and entertaining dialogue between characters, and Ctein obviously has a knack for producing great, intriguing, and well thought out sci-fi. That they were able to work together so well is just remarkable. The book was a great read in every sense. I've been an avid sci-fi fan for the past 50 years, and this book ranks among the best. Highly recommended. I hope they are able to produce a sequel, as the ending leaves open many possible avenues to pursue.

Saturn Run. MR. Sanford needs needs to stay with his Prey series and leave the science fiction to someone else.

Space Prey (not). Pretty good plotting like a real Sandford book, but without fully developed characters like Lucas Davenport or Virgil Flowers the book remains two dimensional.

Best I've read in years. This is the best SyFy that I've read in years. It incorporates Sandford's ability to create living breathing characters, insert them into realistic storylines and Ctein's ability to describe technology within that story. Couldn't put it down! Reminds me of the old dudes like Issac Asimov. What we need is More!

Absolutely stunning. I started reading Sci Fi in the late 70's, and have been doing so ever since. Saturn Run is one of the finest I have ever read, right up there at the top 10 list.

Don't Get the Poor Reviews. Great story, great writing. I finished it in 2 days, as it totally kept me captivated. Good science without too much math to bog it down. 5 stars...easy

Saturn Run. Enough science to make the fiction interesting, plausible, and very enjoyable. Even the politics, though fictional, were believable. Loved it.

Saturn Run. Entertaining.

Saturn run. I'm a longtime fan of the author. Unfortunately his output has been reducing in quality but this is aLmost unreadable. Very disappointing! Get back to Davenport .

Good beach read. I enjoyed this book so much I finished it in three days. The characters are well developed, though in my mind they cut them all short of fully developed. The science is good and not above an average level, which helps with ease of reading. They also don't go fantastical with the story or tech. A very plausible look at what Contact could be like.
