Child of Silence by Abigail Padgett Book Summary

In the first award-winning Bo Bradley Mystery, Child of Silence, an old Paiute woman finds a four-year-old boy tied to a mattress in an abandoned shack in the hills above San Diego, and child abuse investigator Bo Bradley gets the case. Staff at St. Mary's Hospital for Children assume the boy is mentally impaired because he cannot talk, but Bo remembers a little sister named Laurie. The boy, like Laurie, is deaf.

Complicating things is Bo's manic depressive disorder, a troubling but occasionally valuable problem for which she almost always takes her meds. Bo tangles with the system, first in attempts to place her young client in a foster home where sign language is used, and later, after someone has tried to shoot the child, in a desperate, manicky, midnight flight into the desert to save his life.

"A sensationally fine first novel… breathtakingly well-told…"The Los Angeles Times

Enlightening story.. I couldn’t put the book down. The story was beautiful and sad. The characters were fantastic. Great read and highly recommended.

Child of Silence. A strong but damaged woman reaches within the rescue a child. Beautifully written.

Great Title. Very well written.Held one’s interest throughout. My

Child Silence. This book left me speechless! I myself am bipolar. I fear others knowing. This book took that fear away. We too are humans! We can and do make a difference! I read this book straight through. It's beautiful, intense and real! Looking forward to the others! Thank you Abigail!

Child of Silence. So interesting I couldn’t put it down. Gives one insight into the world of the deaf.

Avid reader. So many confusing ramblings that made understand manic depression more. But sticking with wanting to know the story and end result was rewarding and enjoyable! I have two family (children) members with hearing implants and no matter the disability, a child can become anything they want to be, even President or a great artist!

Fascinating. Very different, very believable. I’m looking forward to reading more by this author.

Captivating story. Thoughtful treatment of manic-depression. A likable heroine and an intriguing and sometimes tense story that weaves Native American and old Celtic imagery together. I was captivated.

Excellent read.. I enjoyed the story line. I really like Bo as a character Couldn’t put the book down.

One of the best.. Wish I could give this book 20 stars. Wonderful insightful book into mental illness with an incredible heroin and friends. Not only was the story engaging with mystery and adventure and history but I learned so much. My heart has changed after reading this book.

Child of Silence. Good read! I couldn’t put the book down!

Child of Silence. First time reading this author. I don’t usually read mysteries, but nothing else available to me seemed interesting. This story is a roller coaster ride and I couldn’t stop reading. Loved the characters and their back story. I would definitely read this author again.

Excellent suspense story.. I really liked the character Bo. Hopefully this book will assist more people in understanding bi-polar disorder.

Well written. I enjoyed the original story line. Kept me interested, and I learned a bit about ASL, CPS, and a particular type of Indian Heritage. This book is a short read, but written well, thoroughly hitting the writers points while captivating the reader through the point of view of a manic-depressive.

Intriguing characters. An insightful introduction to cultures of the marginalized, the mentally ill, the deaf and native Americans. The culture of the privileged wealthy is treated less kindly with much justification, considering their indifference to those they have ignored or exploited. A thoughtful plot that is food for thought for readers.

One of the more interesting reads. It was definitely something I wasn’t expecting from the main character and how the story was told.

Chillingly accurate. Having cared for mentally ill people, the author captures the struggle of manic people perfectly. Combined with a heart wrenching storyline I was unable to put this book down.
