INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

“If you liked Where the Crawdads Sing, you’ll love This Tender Land...This story is as big-hearted as they come.” —Parade

The unforgettable story of four orphans who travel the Mississippi River on a life-changing odyssey during the Great Depression.

In the summer of 1932, on the banks of Minnesota’s Gilead River, Odie O’Banion is an orphan confined to the Lincoln Indian Training School, a pitiless place where his lively nature earns him the superintendent’s wrath. Forced to flee after committing a terrible crime, he and his brother, Albert, their best friend, Mose, and a brokenhearted little girl named Emmy steal away in a canoe, heading for the mighty Mississippi and a place to call their own.

Over the course of one summer, these four orphans journey into the unknown and cross paths with others who are adrift, from struggling farmers and traveling faith healers to displaced families and lost souls of all kinds. With the feel of a modern classic, This Tender Land is an enthralling, big-hearted epic that shows how the magnificent American landscape connects us all, haunts our dreams, and makes us whole.

Loved it and highly recommend this one.. Captivating yarn!

Loved it!. Excellent book, couldn’t put it down.

This Tender Land. This is a wonderful story that has helped me pass time during the Covid 19 isolation. As my family and I struggle through the uncertainty of our time, it was comforting to watch these characters work their way through the terrible uncertainty of the Great Depression. Graceful writing, tender stories and vivid scenes remind me that this is a beautiful world that begs us to look for the simple beauty all around us. This is a book to savor.

This Tender Land. Five stars for an amazing tale. This author has the gift of words as you feel yourself with the children and their plight. He paints the picture with words.

Amazing Journey. 1932....I feel like I was there with the 4 Vagabonds on their journey. Mr. Krueger is an awesome storyteller.....just like Odie.

Rick. A nice story that keeps moving with likable characters. You won’t be disappointed that you read it.

One of My Top 3 Bools of 2020. One of my favourite books of 2020. It was a wonderful, emotional rollercoaster of an escape from the madness that has been this year. It’s well worth the read. I’ve seen this book compared to Huckleberry Finn, but this is so much better than that. The characters are so loveable. They all have a purpose, warm hearts, and genuine love for each other.

Wow!. What a wonderful mix of historic fiction. A tale that mixes the history of indigenous peoples with the orphans and underserved of the depression. A real page turner from the start. I loved reading it.

Such a beautiful and sometimes heartbreaking tale.. This is the first book I’ve read by this author but it definitely won’t be the last.

Beautifully written. A warming tale of tragedy, hope, family and the flow of the river.

I loved it!. I enjoyed following along on their journey!

Thank you. I can visualize every scene in his description of the surroundings during the Vagabonds travels. What an enjoyable read. I am learning all about Minnesota and it’s, sometimes traumatic history.

This Tender Earth. Amazing. A true epic. A cross between Grapes of Wrath and Water for Elephants

Wonderful book. One of the best stories I’ve ever read. Amazing American classic

Very good Book!. This was a great story! Very exciting but also for some reason very relaxing and very well written! Would definitely recommend!

DEFINITE MUST READ. Beautifully written book and story. Excellent character development and very hard to put down. I did not want it to end. Thank you

Glad it was on sale.. There’s not an original idea in this book. Couldn’t care less about the characters, I mean stereotypes. The good guys aren’t good and the bad guys aren’t bad. They are just there…word by word…daring me to finish. Awful. Can I get my 3 bucks back?

Very entertaining..... Well written and paced. Character development is excellent and transformative. The Author captures the true feelings of the time in history through the shared experiences of the four Vagabonds. A must read.

This Tender Land. The type of book that you can't put down, but as you near the end, you are tempted to slow down because you don't want it to end! Once again, a book that tells the story of hardships in life that so many young children, particularly during the depression years, suffered unnecessarily at the hands of greedy and plain mean adults! The Native American children were certainly ill treated and cruelly kidnapped from their tribes under the false pretense of it being " for their own good". I could not stop reading. It did not seem to be the length that it is! How I hated the "Black Witch" as did the four vagabonds! Yet, there were redeeming caring adults who were sympathetic to the needs of the "family"of four youngsters. The adults who did so, were honest and kind and generous to share what little they had out of genuine concern for their welfare. Wonderful, believable characters, even the mean ones were truly despicable! I would highly recommend this book!

Remarkable. You will not be able to put this one down.

Great!. Loved it! Thank you for a great story!

A little overdone but worth your time. Someone described this as a book you would like if you enjoyed “I Know Where The Crawdad Sings” and that is not a fair comparison. Crawdad is a better crafted story. But this book is worth your time. You will care about the characters and nearly get whiplash from all the plot twists. The author clearly did a lot of research to inform his story and I appreciate the added effort.

Excellent. This book has you so invested in the characters. So deep, moving, and well written. It will remain with you always.

Excellent book. I enjoyed it immensely.

A great story….. by a true storyteller. Krueger weaves the lines of Native American social injustice and bits of spiritual beliefs through the narrative of four children. I couldn’t put the book down.

This Tender Land. A great read in the spirit of Huckleberry Finn.

This Tender Land. Loved it from start to Finnish! Great weekend read!

A great retelling of the Homeric epic. The author clearly cared a lot about his characters and passes that on to the reader. It is a coming of age story as well as the story of a journey. It isn’t what I had initially expected from Krueger as I had started with his crime novels but it is one of my memorable books of the year.

Breathtaking. Ordinary Grace quickly rose to a lifetime favorite for me and This Tender Land was no different. WKK has such an incredible way of describing the heartbreak that is life while also it’s beauty.

This Tender Land. Could not put down. A new favorite.

Wonderful Story. This is a great story expertly written by one with a grand imagination!

This Tender Land. Beautiful story

This Tender Land. Loved this book so very much. I had the same feeling as I did when I was a kid reading The Boxcar Children..What a wonderful read.

Too much. This book was exhausting.

This Tender Land. A great adventure from beginning to end. I

This Tender Land. Enjoyed this story, will recommend it to others.

Heartwarming tale. Just the thing you needed but didn’t know it

Grippin. William Kent Krueger is a born story-teller. Loved this book from start to finish. Couldn’t put it down... even after I finished it, and read the epilogue, I was still wishing for more. I’ll miss these vagabonds.

Can’t wait to read more from this author!. 4.5 stars! What can I say? I loved this book! I picked it up because the overall premise seemed like it would be something that would be enjoyable read, with some wisdom insights thrown in. This time period always speaks to me, because it reminds me of my grandparents and my family. While there were bootleggers discussed in this book, my family were also bootleggers, so I enjoyed the entire epic tale. There were a few twists I did not see coming, and the way that the end of the book was wrapped up - I thought it was done nicely. I do have to draw the line with the two quotes on the cover saying it was similar “Where the Crawdads sing.” The only similarities between the two books were that they involved orphans, natural water sources (Mississippi river in this tender heart, the bayou for WTCS), and that outdoor scenery. I could picture the children riding down the river, similar to the main character riding in her boat in the other book. I’d say that the book reminded me of a bunch of things… from the movies “O, Brother Where Art Thou,” and “Stand By Me,” to Kristin Hammer’s book “The Four Winds.” While the book didn’t end up being what I expected, it still was a beautiful & bittersweet tale of the great American lands back in the 1930s, as well as the important of family (both chosen & blood), with a wide array of characters. Some parts were haunting and infuriating, to know how badly the American government treated those who were Native Americans or those who didn’t come from money.

PHENOMAL. A story of 2 brothers left in the ward of a school that was for Indian children who were orphans. Years of abuse from the headmaster and her husband, they escape with their best friend, Mose an Indian who’s tongue has been cut out and through sign language, which the boys knew fluently bc their mother was deaf they communitvatw. With them went their favorite teachers daughter who was captive of the headmasters after a horrible tornado. Through their travels as young children, by canoe they came upon wonderful and frightening adults who had met them along their travels from Minnesota towards St. Louis in search of their Aunt Julia. They were being hunted by the headmasters, who’d told police Emmy, the little girl they took from the horrible circumstances that she’d been kidnapped, they were hiding from the law and their quest for a home in St Louis was a difficult yet beautiful one embarked by 4 REMARKABLE children

Modern day fairytale. Excellent and imaginative! The story is unique , filled with creative characters. The middle part was the least likable in my opinion. But, the beginning and end are quite satisfying.

This Tender Land. Beautifully written, thought provoking, uplifting. I loved this book!

This tender land. Enjoyed this one!

Fabulous book. Great story, long but a quick read. Fell in love with all 4 kids
