The Fireman by Joe Hill Book Summary

From the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of NOS4A2 and Heart-Shaped Box comes a chilling novel about a worldwide pandemic of spontaneous combustion that threatens to reduce civilization to ashes and a band of improbable heroes who battle to save it, led by one powerful and enigmatic man known as the Fireman.

The fireman is coming. Stay cool.

No one knows exactly when it began or where it originated. A terrifying new plague is spreading like wildfire across the country, striking cities one by one: Boston, Detroit, Seattle. The doctors call it Draco Incendia Trychophyton. To everyone else it’s Dragonscale, a highly contagious, deadly spore that marks its hosts with beautiful black and gold marks across their bodies—before causing them to burst into flames. Millions are infected; blazes erupt everywhere. There is no antidote. No one is safe.

Harper Grayson, a compassionate, dedicated nurse as pragmatic as Mary Poppins, treated hundreds of infected patients before her hospital burned to the ground. Now she’s discovered the telltale gold-flecked marks on her skin. When the outbreak first began, she and her husband, Jakob, had made a pact: they would take matters into their own hands if they became infected. To Jakob’s dismay, Harper wants to live—at least until the fetus she is carrying comes to term. At the hospital, she witnessed infected mothers give birth to healthy babies and believes hers will be fine too. . . if she can live long enough to deliver the child.

Convinced that his do-gooding wife has made him sick, Jakob becomes unhinged, and eventually abandons her as their placid New England community collapses in terror. The chaos gives rise to ruthless Cremation Squads—armed, self-appointed posses roaming the streets and woods to exterminate those who they believe carry the spore. But Harper isn’t as alone as she fears: a mysterious and compelling stranger she briefly met at the hospital, a man in a dirty yellow fire fighter’s jacket, carrying a hooked iron bar, straddles the abyss between insanity and death. Known as The Fireman, he strolls the ruins of New Hampshire, a madman afflicted with Dragonscale who has learned to control the fire within himself, using it as a shield to protect the hunted . . . and as a weapon to avenge the wronged.

In the desperate season to come, as the world burns out of control, Harper must learn the Fireman’s secrets before her life—and that of her unborn child—goes up in smoke.

Disappointing. Horns and NOS4A2 were great reads. With The Fireman, Joe Hill (King) seams to be writing like his dad. Crazy religious cults, pseudo supernatural events and a lousy ending. Lousy explanation why things happened Just like his dad's books.

The Fireman is captivating!!!. I absolutely loved this book. I like that I was drawn into this world and really got to know each of the main characters. I enjoy long books with lots of interesting twists and turns. When the book ends and I mourn the loss of this world and making it hard to start a new one.....it has been a great read!! Highly recommend The Fireman!!!

Amazingly Hard To Put Down!. When I began reading this book, I knew in an instant I was hooked. The twists and turns had me wanting more. Joe Hill has written such an amazing, page turning book!

Fireman. Why am I so bored with this story?

Great Read. First book by Smith. Great read.

amazing. I didn’t even read the blurb for this before going in so I knew nothing about it except the title and the cover art. The Fireman turned out to be exactly my kind of book. I love when a story makes me feel. I was angry, devastated, scared, invigorated, deeply touched— I could keep going. The amazing characters and storyline really pulled me in. It’s sort of an apocalyptic tale but not really and sort of dystopian but not exactly. Spores are infecting certain people and changing their makeup. Some spontaneously combust, and others react differently. The reader sees a lot of the best and worst of humanity. Page after page kept me on the edge, and after finishing, all I could do was try to recover from all of my overworked emotions. I couldn’t sleep that night because all of the sad and beautiful parts kept replaying in my head. The details and delivery are so intelligent that it completely feels real.

Great Book!. Joe Hill writes almost as well as his dad. Very close. Very good.

His best book yet!. Loved it! Harper, you are my hero!

Fireman. I was looking forward to reading my third Joe Hill book, but I was disappointed. He could have eliminated a couple of hundred pages. It was pretty boring except for the beginning and the end. Spontaneous combustion is a cool topic and it would have been nice if he had discussed real people that had died from it, instead of spores, and possibly talked about the ‘wick effect.’ Better luck with the next book Joe.

I loved this book!. I am a long time Stephen King fan, but I've read everything he's ever written. I just recently learned he is King's son, so I thought I'd give it a try...so glad I did! Great story!

Great read!. Joe Hill definitely inherited his parents talents...this one is an emotional roller coaster full of twists and turns...loved it!

All In The Family. With his pedigree, you can only expect a delicious read. Mr. Hill delivers. The Apple didn't fall far from the tree.

No. Boring the whole time. Lead to a rushed and anti climactic ending that was just all around unpleasant. Read it anyway but wanted it to end. Found myself skipping over paragraphs because I could tell they were useless.

The Fireman. Good read! Want more!!!

Loved it!. First time reading Joe Hill. Definitely not the last. Great story with rich characters

The Fireman. Fabulous storyline Interesting how Joe keeps the contemporary aspect while hinting at a not so future concept. Loved it, couldn't put it down!!!!

Thoroughly enjoyable!. Love this book. It was his best yet!

Nope. Can't even finish it. I've read all of his other books and this is pure rubbish.

Tore thru it like a house on fire. Great book. I read so much and fast and loved that this story went on! Great characters, so many that came to life for me and some it really hurt to lose. I love when I can "see" the story in my mind as I read and this had beautiful imagery. Thanks for the fun and madly entertaining tale Joe!

Suspenseful & Entertaining. Great read. Inspired much discussion around my house about pandemics, end-of-the-world scenarios and ends justify the means mentality/consequences. For a change, the characters you care about are the ones infected and the "healthy" are the bad guys. Bravo Mr. Hill!

Wonderful!. Great tale. Joe Hill's books continue to enthrall & amaze me: loved it ♨️♨️♨️♨️♨️

Awesome read. Serious page turner!!!!

The fireman. I enjoyed this from beginning to end. Even the ending made me cry a bit.

The Fireman. Great novel!! Great Author!!!

The Fireman. I really wanted to give this five stars, because I really enjoyed it, but there seemed to be too many subtle references to SK's opus, "The Stand" for me. The creepy guy from the camp being named Harold was the most glaring. I would gladly recommend this book to any SK fan, if only to find out if I'm the only one who noticed what seemed to me to be several subtle tips of the hat to The Stand.

Hill is on FIRE!. I've read all of Joe Hill's books. This is now my favorite. Each character is vivid & so memorable. I love the "good guys" and abhor the "bad ones!" This book absolutely grabs you & doesn't let go. Read it, you won't be sorry. I gobbled it up and wish it had never ended.

Brilliant!. I loved it. My favorite Hill novel, thus far.

The Fireman. Outstanding novel! I couldn't put it down. Love Joe Hills' writing style, guaranteed to pull me into the story.

Riveting. Hard to put down. I love the subtle references to his previous novels hidden within the story. It feels like they are all intertwined, although they are all completely separate entities. His works always leave me sad that I've reached the end but not for a lack of completeness to the story, for the plain fact that I enjoy being so captivated.

The Fireman by Joe Hill. Mix together Firestarter with Lord of the Flies, add in some Mary Poppins, along with the Supernatural of Joe Hill and you are left with a story of amazing adventure. In this book Joe Hill surpasses his previous works. In addition to his constantly leaving you wondering what is going to happen next, he adds in a good deal of dark humor (e.g. "an old flame"). The book even left me with an unexpected surprise near the end of the story. This is a long book but worth the time taken to read it. This is a book I would recommend to all

Amazing!. Did not want to put this one down! Beautifully written, I read until the wee hours of the morning a couple of times until I finished it. This is the fifth Joe Hill book I’ve read, he’s quickly becoming my favorite author.

The fireman. Great read

The Fireman. This book was long and tedious. The writing is okay but the plot was boring and an editor should have chopped this book in half.

Very enjoyable read!. I could see this as a movie - it has the highs, lows, action and romance that make it an enjoyable, entertaining journey. I definitely recommend it!

Love, love, loved it!. Hooked instantly by the story and the characters. Couldn't put it down because I couldn't imagine what was coming next and had to find out. His dad's influence may be strong (loved the nozz-a-la reference) but Joe is definitely in a class all his own! Can't wait to see what comes next!
