I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid Book Summary

Now a Netflix original movie, this deeply scary and intensely unnerving novel follows a couple in the midst of a twisted unraveling of the darkest unease. You will be scared. But you won’t know why…

I’m thinking of ending things. Once this thought arrives, it stays. It sticks. It lingers. It’s always there. Always.

Jake once said, “Sometimes a thought is closer to truth, to reality, than an action. You can say anything, you can do anything, but you can’t fake a thought.”

And here’s what I’m thinking: I don’t want to be here.

In this smart and intense literary suspense novel, Iain Reid explores the depths of the human psyche, questioning consciousness, free will, the value of relationships, fear, and the limitations of solitude. Reminiscent of Jose Saramago’s early work, Michel Faber’s cult classic Under the Skin, and Lionel Shriver’s We Need to Talk about Kevin, “your dread and unease will mount with every passing page” (Entertainment Weekly) of this edgy, haunting debut. Tense, gripping, and atmospheric, I’m Thinking of Ending Things pulls you in from the very first page…and never lets you go.

Haunting and beautiful. Like a philosophy class, this book will ask a lot of questions without clear answers. For me it even provoked some self reflection. It’s a story that will stick with you. Poetic, haunting, beautiful and sad are the best words to describe it.

Worst book I ever read.. This book makes no sense ,no rhyme or reason, starts out interesting and goes totally down hill,a big waste of money .After leaving his parents home,I was totally lost once they arrived at the school.

Don’t waste your money. I can see what the author was trying to achieve, but ultimately it was disappointing. It’s a book about mental illness disguised as a thriller. There are a multitude of holes in the story that I can only assume are supposed to be answered by the “twist” ending. The ending was not satisfying, but what is most upsetting is that I wasted time reading through the endless droning dialogue between characters.

Artistic... yet, unsatisfying.... This book will definitely make you feel the creeps(!), but will also (perhaps) leave you unsatisfied. That’s how I felt about it. Do not expect a clean resolution. Which is fine! I’m not saying every book needs a clean resolution. However... It would’ve been very satisfying to the reader here, in my very humble opinion.

A good read. It was really good honestly I couldn’t stop reading. I do feel the ending was rushed and I was like what?? I don’t get it… until I got it. Honestly I still think it is worth the read!

I don’t really know. Honestly awful lol. No real plot, or maybe I just didn’t get it.

AMAZING. I found this book at the perfect point in my life. If you are here from the movie, PLEASE check this out.

Amateur. Terribly written. Bored me with cliches from the first chapter on. I stoped reading it a quarter of the way through. Awful.

complex and thought provoking. don’t write this book off as confusing. it is extremely thoughtful and the amount of metaphors and relatability present is incredible. take your time, work your way through the book, and try to understand the origins of the story, which at the end of the day, is mental illness and existentialism.

No. I had high hopes for this book and was let all the way down. It’s the most boring slow book I’ve read. I probably would’ve DNFd it had I not be hoping for a redeeming ending that just did not come.

Absolutely Brilliant!. If you’re tired of the same boring plots with the majority of psychological/mystery/thrillers, Mr. Reid is your man! How thought provoking, original, creepy & disturbing (in a good way). If you like this, sure & read “Foe.” Another brilliant book I couldn’t put down. Also check out author Dan Choan if you enjoy Reid’s style of writing.

eerie. read this in one sitting, i couldn’t put it down. i usually have a clear sense of what twists could happen in movies/books, and i had a completely different one for this. it’s definitely not what you think, and i think that made it more suspenseful at the end.

The ending. The ending is a bit strange and not what I was expecting after such an enticing beginning. It’s kind of clever but also seems like a cliché. It was an all around good read but I had to look up the authors explanation of the ending to truly understand what it meant.

Good book overall-ending was messy. The first half of the book was very addicting as you dive into this couple’s relationship dynamic and the main character’s questions around relationships in general. The dialogue is good and the actions are suspenseful. However, when you enter the high school scene it gets very messy. The explanation of her surroundings and what comes next is rudely interrupted with more questions and inner dialogue that didn’t feel like it fit in the part of the book it was in. It got rocky and the writing flow just didn’t make sense to me. The twist was pretty cool which is why I give it 4 stars, but the delivery took away a star.

Crazy Good Read. What appears to be a story of a young woman on the verge of breaking up with her boyfriend, turns into something quite different. The story starts to take a scary turn once she and her soon-to-be ex-boyfriend make a visit to his parents. If you like a story with twists and turns, this is for you. It's even the kind of story to read over to see what clues you may have missed.

Highly Original. I read this book in record time, extremely original, fast-paced, different from any other book out there.

Well written but horrible story.. This book was well written, but it seemed as the author was more intent on being "literary" rather than providing a good story. It was dark yet boring. Couldn't wait to finish it, not because I wanted to see what happened but so I could move on to a better book. Don't waste your money.

Horrible Book, Worse Movie. I never even leave reviews for things but this is a warning. Cheesy, bad writing. Ill conceived plot. Boring. The absolute worst book AND movie I’ve ever read/watched.

Bad. Too many inconsistencies to overlook. The “twist” at the end seemed forced and rushed.

Subjectively, relatable. You can interpret this book however you please. Ultimately it is your choice to give it the meaning you want. It was very powerful and unsettling. Confusing at some points, but they only invited more time to pause and reflect about what's happening. What is being asked. How we as humans respond to these things. Filled me with empathy for those who suffer in ways I do not.

Creepy page turner. Read this in one sitting. Creepy from beginning to end. Be prepared to spend time thinking about this book once it's over.

Rambled on and on..... This book was extremely disappointing. It was just a collection of thoughts and dialogue that rambled on and on without any real meaning. Initially, I felt this book had potential, Jake and his creepy family, but it slowly just fizzled. The end of the story was most disappointing. I skimmed most of it to find out what happens because like the rest of the book it just was mindless chatter. Don’t waste your time reading this.

Yawn. Completely underwhelming, don't waste your money or time on this one.

Confused. Very confused, it has some very chilling parts to it but nothing that really gave me a scare
