Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen Book Summary

“Writing about yourself is a funny business…But in a project like this, the writer has made one promise, to show the reader his mind. In these pages, I’ve tried to do this.” —Bruce Springsteen, from the pages of Born to Run

In 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl’s halftime show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. That’s how this extraordinary autobiography began.

Over the past seven years, Bruce Springsteen has privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life, bringing to these pages the same honesty, humor, and originality found in his songs.

He describes growing up Catholic in Freehold, New Jersey, amid the poetry, danger, and darkness that fueled his imagination, leading up to the moment he refers to as “The Big Bang”: seeing Elvis Presley’s debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. He vividly recounts his relentless drive to become a musician, his early days as a bar band king in Asbury Park, and the rise of the E Street Band. With disarming candor, he also tells for the first time the story of the personal struggles that inspired his best work, and shows us why the song “Born to Run” reveals more than we previously realized.

Born to Run will be revelatory for anyone who has ever enjoyed Bruce Springsteen, but this book is much more than a legendary rock star’s memoir. This is a book for workers and dreamers, parents and children, lovers and loners, artists, freaks, or anyone who has ever wanted to be baptized in the holy river of rock and roll.

Rarely has a performer told his own story with such force and sweep. Like many of his songs (“Thunder Road,” “Badlands,” “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” “The River,” “Born in the U.S.A.,” “The Rising,” and “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” to name just a few), Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography is written with the lyricism of a singular songwriter and the wisdom of a man who has thought deeply about his experiences.

Bruce is still running but he's also found home. This is the first time I've written a review - our book club is reading Born to Run and I just finished it - loved it - so real, so Bruce - will read it again - lots to digest and ponder - keep writing Bruce.

Trash!. You've always been hippie liberal trash! I wish there was a zero star option.

Thank you for the book!. Thank you for the book!

Inside an artist's head. After reading this book, I am going to put on my best headphones and listen to every Bruce album cover-to-cover and will find new personal meaning to the songs he has written. It took a lot of guts for him to write this soul-bearing book but just like the 5 concerts I have seen him at over the years, he gives you every ounce of himself. Sending my peaceful vibes to Bruce and his family on their remaining journeys.

Born to Run. I was really looking forward to reading this and it did not disappoint! The Boss portrays himself as an imperfect human (aren't we all!). His struggles with and through depression definitely helped this Georgia girl. He has been and remains one of my musical and social heroes.

An Excellent Autobiography. The author writes with candor and great introspection. It leaves you wanting more, more stories, more revelations. But the point of the book is to present the "story of the author". Discretion and respect are important principles of this author and that's one of the things you draw from this book. You learn about the person and probably learn how to better understand yourself.

Just a bad read. I understand rock stars have to be narsasistic, but this was over the top. This is one of those books that you get into and just don’t like, but you feel you need to finish. His writing is horrible, he feels he has to use 22 big words to describe something to tell the world even though I barley got through high school, but I am smart. His cheap shots at deceased band member was the worst. Move on, there are much better reads out there.

Tom D. Bruce it was GREAT to finally meet You.. Thank you for SHARING..

Amazing. Bruce, I am a fan for 40 years. Thanks for letting me inside the tent. You have nailed the essence of autobiography here.

This explains why….. I am NOT the starry-eyed Bruce fan who owns every album and has gone to twenty concerts, but I do appreciate his talent and the breadth of his work. This book totally explains why he’s “THE BOSS.” There are only a few memoirs out there with this kind of honesty, vulnerability and emotional depth. Yeah, it still has the requisite amount of name dropping and humble bragging, but the honesty and genuine humility of a very complex man and artist outshine even that. Loved it.

Born to Run. Bruce's work has meant a lot to my family for years and years. The book was highly anticipated and thoroughly enjoyed. As per usual, Bruce exceeded expectations. He's the greatest entertainer of the last 50 years.

What a Book !. I lived in nj growing up and always had a summer home at the jersey shore! I loved this book and was in awe of what he accomplished! Tough times and think of my family growing up and how many of them were also mentally messed up ! Bruce put it all out there for us to see even how depression can rob you of your real self . I loved it all ! Thank you for a great read.

True story of determination and amazing music. I must say that I never new the whole story of what made Bruce Springsteen, and I'm glad he told it. And told it he did! What an incredible writer and story teller. You may know every song word for word as well as note for note but this brings everything to life. To listen to one of the most humble people tell a tale of beginning in a world so many unfortunately know and to fight to become one of the greatest musicians the world believes in is simply inspiring. Mr.Springsteen (I say Mr. Springsteen because he deserves it) had me from the first page to the last. If you want to feel good and incredibly inspired while learning about an incredible life, buy this book and you will not want to put it down until the last page is read and your heart filled. And no this review was not written by the publisher or a super fan. Just a normal man who happened upon the life story of a sound that I grew up with and love.

Shows Us His Soul. Springsteen writes prose with the same poetry as he pens songs. In 'Born To Run' he lays his heart bare and shows us his soul. A natural raconteur, he gives us more than an entertaining/heartfelt/humorous glimpse into his life as a son, a man, a father, and a rock star. What a ride this man has had, thanks for sharing it with us Bruce!

A great read. This is very personal and well written by the Boss. I saw him on his Born in the USA tour in Baton Rouge. I was hooked. And followed him ever since. What a ride. I was very moved by his account of his New Orleans Jazz Fest show and his constant humility. I also sympathized with his issues with aging and depression as I've dealt with some too. But this is an uplifting and intimate memoir and he's a great writer and Patron. As a big fan this is a great book that explains his enormous talents that unfolds onstage. That is only one part of a life savoured and pushed to his limits with his amazing wife and kids. What a journey and I appreciate that he wrote it. I recommend it highly.

Best book ever written. I can't believe how great this book is. I've read every word. I couldn't put it down. Best book ever, man.

Great storyteller. He can do it all.

Straight scoop on rock n roll. Bruce captures all the angst of maneuvering through rock and roll and phases of life. He captures ethnic lower middle class culture to a tee. I am a veteran and will say this to the self righteous knocking him for his honesty on slipping past the Vietnam war, that was his decision and choice at the time. He went on to do great charities for Vets and others. I wonder if those knocking him even know this, even served, or have contributed? Get off your pulpit and just enjoy the book!

A window into his soul. I didn't want it to ever end. Thank you Bruce. Thank you Patti especially. A must read for so many reasons. He writes like he sings. It is effortless to read a chapter without realizing how quickly it went by. The songs, his dad, the anguish, the red headed woman, the band, the music ... It's all here. Like Tracks I hope there is more books coming some day. Love you Bruce. Thanks for everything. Stay healthy. We need you.

Born to Run. As a true Jersey girl, I have the honor of calling Bruce one of our own. If Sinatra was " the King of New Jersey" Bruce is and will always be the "prince". Loved this book and his truthful insights and memories of New Jersey and his musical genius will be ingrained in musical legend forever.

A great read for a true fan. Of course the writing is poignant and expressive what would you expect from such a brilliant songwriter. I loved this story as musician who never had such success it was great to be on the inside for awhile and to learn about one of my heroes and his life

Born to Run. Awesome book. Couldn't put it down. But I would stop reading once in awhile and go to YouTube and watch an interview or concert just to listen to him.

Generous to a Fault. I am not a life long Springsteen fan, for no other reason than there was so much music available that I just never came around to his work. It wasn’t until recently that I read some fiction loosely titled The Austin Trilogy (specifically, The Return), that brought Springsteen to my attention front-and-center. Simultaneously, I read an article about his release of Western Stars, his broadway show and this autobiography, so I figured I’d better check him out. I am thrilled to report that Born to Run is spectacular. Immediately readable, the author is generous to a fault. I still don’t know if I’m a fan of his music, but I am definitely a fan of the man as Artist.

Trudging through.... Whew... Ten or so chapters in.... Slow going, poorly written. Hopefully I'll make it through to the end. I'll get back to you if I do.

From the street to the stage. Great in depth bio of this generations greatest stage/ rock performer. Written with raw and open conviction from the heart of rock and roll and frailty of the human experience. The glory, joys and demons are all here and ever present, God Bless The Boss

Born to Run. Not good. Plus you are a draft dodger. You called yourself a yellow belly. I agree.

Thanks. Was really honest .Went a lot deeper than I thought he was going to. It’s hard for someone with mental illness to open up about it. Thanks for letting your fans get to know you a little better

Fabulous. This is a wonderfully poignant memoir of deep emotions, clarity, honesty and emotions. I loved it from the first page to the last. Thank you Bruce! From one Jersey Shore kid to another.....BRAVO!

Born to Run. Beautifully written, every fan should read! Excellent and hard to put down, wonderful memories revived, feel like I know the story behind the music! Intimate, revealing, inspirational!

Beautifully Written. Written in the continuing prose of "hard to be a saint in the city" it is no doubt a vivid literary tale somewhere between Angela's Ashes and a classic Playboy interview... I kind of wish he never got famous... he's a great writer. In full disclosure I'm one of those fans that love the first four albums and Nebraska ... the early fan that spent years telling people " you've got see this Bruce Springsteen guy!!" Only later to have fans of Dancin in the Dark tell me " man have you heard of Bruce ?" I know there are thousands of us that always want to hang on to when he was just ours... kind of how he holds onto his memories of growing up with his grandparents unconditional acceptance ... I still remember lying in bed staring at my $5.50 Springsteen ticket for the Milwaukee auditorium show.. months away .. he always came in the fall.. He was always was a beautiful working class Messiah ... yeah maybe New York claimed him ... but we NEEDED him .. And this book is no different It is just what I needed ... so.....thank you .... again !! Kevn Kinney

Better be a big BS fan. His story is an interesting one - his roots, self taught musician with a strong work ethic. And it is well written too but there is Too much detail about every performance and concert. It becomes tiresome and worthy of skimming. He's also fairly self absorbed ........as most superstars are.

Born To Run. And run is what he did when his country called in war. He is a perfect leftist but a sad excuse for a roll model and citizen.

Great read!. Not only a great songwriter but a great author as well. I don't read many autobiographies but this one was fantastic. Don't miss it!

Born to Run. A must read for Springsteen fans. Everything you wanted to know and some things you didn't! Never put it down.

Stick to the three chords you know - Bruce. Because you cannot write! Slogging through this mishmash of self congratulatory clap-trap was akin to staying till the end of a Molly Cyrus concert!

Very good. This is the best book I have read without a problem. I could marrie this book

Unreadable. I just could not get into it. It never got me interested. After 50 pages I quit

Bruce Springsteen’s “Mystery Train". Bruce Springsteen's memoir is perhaps the literary equivalent of his four hour concerts. Springsteen's book ranges from his earliest memories to his current inspiration. I am humbled at the craft and honesty in this book. His life story is shaped and nuanced for sure, but it still is stunningly compelling. Springsteen delves into his musical history in quite some depth. His early bands - the Castiles and Steel Mill helped the young Springsteen grow into the leader of the E Street Band. Stories from the road abound. Freehold, Asbury Park, New York City, San Francisco, London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Memphis, and even Big Sur's Esalen make an appearance. Springsteen also dives into the thoughts behind his most important albums. The tension between the spontaneous nature of his live shows and the crafting of his music into recordings is palpable in the pages of "Born to Run". Springsteen also opens old wounds to shine a light on his family's history of mental illness and his own struggles with depression. This is an important American story that is not to be missed. Beg , borrow, or steal this book!

Ever the Boss.... I've been a Bruce Springsteen fan for a long, long time, and I've read at least a couple of biographies—as well as I don't know how many articles and interviews over the years. Still, reading the Boss' account of his life and experiences is a revelation. His voice is clear throughout the book, and his perspective on his albums and tours is invaluably informative.

Honest. Straightforward, deeply honest and reflective book. There were parts where he might have delved a little far into his psyche, but overall a very enjoyable read. I know far more about him now than previously. A very admirable singer/songwriter.

It is what it is.. Great read for any Springsteen fan. I've loved his music for so long. Only con is at some points, he circles around the same point for too long. Otherwise, an incredible inside look at the life of a rock icon!

Bruce Springsteen Born To Run (book). Quite possibly the best autobiography I've ever read! He is truly a wordsmith. A must-read.

Born To Run. Great read!!!!

Excellent. I'm not the biggest fan of the Boss. Without a doubt he is a master of his craft, but this book is a surprise. The writing is so unique. He uses phrases I've never heard of and presents them in a way that is entirely his own. His career is all here, as well as his personal life. A very honest presentation of his strength and weakness and inner demons. I swear I wanted to start clapping when I got to the end.

Just the sample. It doesn't read as Bruce. It reads as someone else.
