Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A twisting, haunting true-life murder mystery about one of the most monstrous crimes in American history, from the author of The Wager and The Lost City of Z, “one of the preeminent adventure and true-crime writers working today."—New York Magazine • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • NOW A MARTIN SCORSESE PICTURE

“A shocking whodunit…What more could fans of true-crime thrillers ask?”—USA Today

“A masterful work of literary journalism crafted with the urgency of a mystery.” —The Boston Globe

In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe.

Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. One of her relatives was shot. Another was poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more and more Osage were dying under mysterious circumstances, and many of those who dared to investigate the killings were themselves murdered.

As the death toll rose, the newly created FBI took up the case, and the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to try to unravel the mystery. White put together an undercover team, including a Native American agent who infiltrated the region, and together with the Osage began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history.

Tragic story. Book read more like a news report, didn’t care fir it

Very interesting story that is hard to put down.. Amazing investigation into these historic events

Great Book! A Page Turner.. I wasn’t planning to read this book, but after it continuously appeared in my recommendations, I gave in and bought it. The result was that I couldn’t put it down. I definitely walked away from this book having learned a great deal about something that I never knew about before.

I absorbed the education.. Such a courageous expose of the lives and land that were stolen. I wish this information was available to me growing up through the school system.

Hair raising story. And absolutely unbelievable true story. Jaw-dropping. How can such evil exist in this world.

Native Americans. It was fascinating, though so so sad, to get a sliver of understanding of how much the Native Indians suffered at the hand of white men. Their land was stolen, they were killed by the thousands, their heritage erased, their wealth plundered. For those who know little about this proud people, this book will hopefully raise your awareness and perhaps give you an insight as to just how long and how strongly prejudice has been rooted in our country. Recent events confirm that racism is still very much alive here. All of us need to work towards a fair treatment of all men. It is up to us!

Amazing. Terrifying betrayal of your own people for greed.

A terrifying reality for a peaceful people the Osage indians. I could not put this historic book down! It’s a very well documented & very gripping sad tale of US history. Also loved the wonderful pictures of the people of the Osage Nation. What a crooked world we live in.

Terrified. This remarkable book takes us on a profound journey into the past, shining a light on the tragic fate of the Osage Indians, who suffered a brutal massacre at the hands of the white community. David Grann, the author, meticulously unveils every aspect of this haunting story, leaving no detail untouched. His work is an invaluable guide through history, making it an essential read that deserves our utmost gratitude.

Hard to put down. Very interesting, and very tragic story of greed and murder.

Killers of the flower moon. As a lifelong Oklahoman, I'm just learning more of our dark history through this very detailed account. Having travelled these parts in the book, the author very skillfully described the setting. His effort to describe the culture made the story meaningful and vivid. It is a gripping tale yet hard to read and uncover the evil intent of men due to greed.

A difficult read. Well enough written, but the subject matter was difficult to take in, for me. It read like a punch in the gut. I was not entertained, I was filled with rage and feelings of impotence over the atrocities, the coverups, the ineptitudes of law officers and the lack of investigation or prosecution of the murderers. It raised my blood pressure. For these reasons I cannot say that I enjoyed the book. The book really dragged in places. It felt as though it would never end. There was always one more murder. I feel I should apologize to the Osage people for the generational trauma they have experienced. May this book and the movie bring healing, not more exploitation.

Terrible. One of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Poorly written, poorly produced and poorly directed. There’s 3 ½ hours we’ll never get back.

Killers of the flower mooms. What a detailed and well written piece. I liked to say I surprised by this story, but sadly knowing the history of the US Government in relation to native Americans. I am not only throughly discussed.

Grann is an incredible researcher. If you have enjoyed David Grann’s other works of historical non-fiction you will love Killers of the Flower moon as well. Again Grann starts with a story almost too incredible to be true, and uncovers more mysteries that remain unsolved to this day. Where Grann shines is in his meticulous and dogged research of the subject matter, as a reader you always feel like you’re watching a mystery being unraveled. Well worth a read before Martin Scorcese adapts it for AppleTV+ with an incredible cast.

A piece of history!. I just saw the movie last night and had so many questions so I got up this morning and started reading! The book is well written and so many small details answered many of my questions! I and a friend had an opportunity to visit Pawhusks,OK this spring and even though I knew nothing of story at the time of our visit I totally recognized the rolling hills and area! Our visit to Pawhuska made the book come more alive! We visited the courthouse and saw the statue of Molly and of the oseage warriors! A good book and I encourage u to see the movie also!

A great read. A piece of history, melding the corruption, greed, and dismissal of Native American life America was largely built upon in one fascinatingly depressing story, heretofore entirely unknown to me.

Amazing!. This book is enthralling and highlights a horrible time in American history that few know about.

Review. It was a fascinating story and quite disturbing. It was sometimes hard to follow. The stories drug out. But the story was important and needed to be told

Excellent. Excellent labor of love and truth. Our appreciation is inadequate to show this historic document.

A DAUGHTERS MOTHER OF WHITE💜. I know the injustice and the beginning of FBI lawmakers! Read a while ago! Rangers!!! They borrowed that for special police!!!!

Absolutely infuriating, disgraceful racism perpetrated by whites for greed selfish gain. I knew prior to embarking upon this true crime terrorization and obliteration of innocent, kind and gross systemic racism and xenophobic violence and slaughtering of an entire population of the indigenous communities tribes and clans all over the country of which the European white colonists were so terrifyingly brutal, psychotic and done out of greed, selfishness and the need to remain powerful in a confused state of insecurity, fear, ignorance and sadly those vile traits and actions weren’t shameful enough for all the generations thereafter didn’t find themselves haunted by the transgressions and homicidal marauding their ancestors did out of selfishness, pride, ignorance and deep seeded superiority over anyone who didn’t conform to their values beliefs or cultural norms and traditional social structures. Worse off were those whose appearance was startling opposite, not having any sort of similarity but more differences in their appearance, body structure, language, culture, lifestyle and social norms. The ignorance of the whites who came to a heavily populated and very heavily established landmass that wasn’t in need of discovering, having been born from ancestors who’d existed in their traditional land locations, where they held their prayers and offerings and held gatherings within their own tribe and with those who lived in the surrounding villages. It was clear these tribes didn’t have any violent, hostile or vengeful intentions nor emotions towards their neighboring tribes, they knew only to fear the WHITE man who was only sort who’d come to their land and created any dissension, manipulation or violently threatened, attacked and murdered their extraordinarily healthy, happy and extremely peaceful peoples who’d populated their own territories some in 6 figures. Knowing that a fraction of these hearty tribes were left when the their murderers and violent perpetrators were done slaughtering them after they’d run them from all their possessions, the lands and natural resources that they not only depended upon to live but where they also had deep and intimate bonds with so many areas within their territories where they practiced their religion of loving their Mother Earth and nature and all the abundance of bounty it has given sacrifices over time for their ancestors and present populations. They had a deep abiding faith respect and compassion for the natures finest most wondrous natural beauty in all the astonishing and truly mystical and mystifying ways of nature and the skies, the weather, the galaxies and seasons and had learned with admirable and incomparable intelligence and precision how to recognize the seasons, the weather turns, the natural conditions on water, land, thr temperaments in nearly all sentient life and could successfully and quite exemplary adapt their ways of life to adapt best to the ways of the natural environment and conditions in their environment at the time of year. They were once referred to as “the happiest people on Earth” by missionaries who’d been to testify to them about their own religious beliefs and practices but didn’t use any calculating, manipulative or life changing traumatic experiences or aggression against them either. This part of history makes me so enraged, so humble and I feel I haven’t even taken action to make my life meaningful and try to make some reparations on behalf of my ancestors and the government as a whole as this is yet still a population that’s underprivileged, underfunded oppressed and are targeted in the country’s systemic racism in their society, their institutions and overall lack of compassion or respect STILL to this day. However, to hear these hateful and I’m certain they were paled down versions of the ugliness of the human race specifically the whites in their racist micro aggressions and macro aggression and exclusion that’s obnoxiously ignorant and is still being touted as a general and societal norm of perspective and HUMAN DECENCY towards all yet in this country when they speak of respect and opportunity and compassion they mean towards whites. Nowhere in their television, movies or even a portion of writers are changing the narrative and social climate by taking ACTION and to rage against thE MACHINE. Osage community and tribe has far more grace, human dignity and integrity than I’d ever imagine having let alone find the power to rise above a lifelong struggle of poverty oppression and discrimination. I’d not be nearly as composed, kind or humble. I’d love to be able to learn more from their culture and beliefs but I’m certain that every one of them are extremely weary of the white man and stranger outside of their reservations. They’ve always had the right to be left alone to love and live and learn and laugh their own ways and be at peace, content and feel. Deep sense of belonging and safety and security wherever they are on this planet yet it’s been proven Year after year for several thousands of years that the first few thousand years they were here alone they thrived, evolved and adapted. They’d figured the secret to being happy in this life and on this earth. That was traumaticallly torn and destroyed from their lives and their customs and since then, they’ve never been able to live in their natural state of being, practicing and living in their natural cultural heritage states and prevented in many areas from praying and having ceremonial rituals and community activities in the places they’d once known for thousands of years. Their loss is immense, it’s vast and expansive. It will leave a lasting impression and destabilizing impact in their communities and populations. Possibly forever. We should be ashamed of ourselves and take example and lead from these people who’ve known all along the way to live, to exist authentically peacefully and naturally as human beings

Engrossing, enraging.. It is a shame and shock the general public (myself included pre-read) is unaware of these atrocities. I had no idea. A great book, thoroughly investigated and explained clearly.

Riveting, terrifying, and a well-paced read!. Killers of the Flower Moon was that perfect kind of historical non-fiction that reads like a suspense novel. It is an easy and well-paced read despite the true story being so terrifying, sad, and intense.

Painful Irrelevant Details. A good account of what took place but far too many irrelevant details. It read more like a history book than a story.

Unknown History. A very interesting history that was not taught in most school systems. The Osage Nation was systematically torn apart by greedy, immoral people so they could get the rights to their oil. Another terrible chapter in US history.

Amazing Read that some many knew and so many more should.. The book gives only a glimpse into the horrors of greed.

Excellent. Very informative and shocking that these crimes happened in America and have not been solved. Excellent writing. I highly recommend. Eve Freeport , New York November 1, 2023

Shocking. I learned valuable history and perspective on the tragedies affecting the Osage. It’s a travesty this history is not taught in schools. I’d also never heard of the Tulsa race riots until I was over sixty. Thank you for researching and writing this.

A history telling masterpiece. I had been meaning to read this book for quite some time. I am shocked that this isn’t something that is taught in schools. I live in Osage county and graduated from a school not far. We were never taught about the Reign of Terror. The generational trauma that this dark period of US history has caused is unfathomable. I struggle to understand how man can be so cruel. And not just few cruel people, but MANY. Many of whom were never brought to justice and carried out a normal life stealing and murdering Osages. Read this book. It’s eye-opening, chilling, and thought-provoking.

One tragedy of American History to learn from. Amazing read! I learned so much from this seemingly previously untold story.

Loved the movie. It was better than the book

Killers of the Flower Moon. Another example of horrendous behavior from the white man toward the native Americans. The writing is such that I felt like I was there. I grew to know the people involved. Superbly crafted.

Great read. Couldn’t get through the beginning but decided to try persevere and it was amazing!!! I’m glad the Osage’s history is being retold!

Boring. Way too many characters, hard to follow….just plain boring.

WOW wbjjcj. I couldn’t put it down, absolutely heartbreaking how the Osage were treated-despicable towns people that had dirty hands and dirty secrets. Certainly someone could take up the cause and help the Osage descendents with answers and some closure.

So good. I could not stop reading!

Amazing work of humanity, inhumanity. and the research that brought it all together. The way JEH took the credit and was able to remake a second rate department into a more polished and professional National Police force was genius…although the man certainly has his issues.

A stunning story well told.. An illuminating, heartbreaking and frightening story. I started it at night, read for hours and picked it up the first thing the next morning. Just when you think it is over, there is more.

🥲. I already reviewed the Audiobook but I wanted to add a review here as well. I usually listen to the audiobook and follow along with the digital copy for back tracking. Anyway this book was GREAT!

Disappointing. The topic was certainly interesting but there was no crescendo to the story. It led to a bland courtroom section and a boring documentary type section after that. I wanted to read it before seeing the movie but after doing so, I am not interested in the movie.

Great true crime!. Great book with so much history. I felt like it slowed a bit in the middle, but it’s worth pushing through and the story is worth knowing. Excited to see the movie!

Loved it.. great read.

I have a zzz. Rdersser

Unforgettable. Finished in a day, couldn’t stop reading it. So glad I discovered David Grann!

Loved it!. I was fascinated learning about this dark part of history.

Love this book. Heartbreaking, so much injustice, and sadly this is still going on today

Couldn’t put it down.. I read this book it 2 days. I literally couldn’t put it down. It had so many twists , it kept me intrigued. it was such a sad eye opener into a terrible part of American history, but I’m glad I read it ! I hope more people do.

5⭐️ MUST READ. A Must read for early American history lovers and crime/mystery lovers alike. The way the writer is able to web together information and spread historical facts throughout what is an immersive and thought provoking story was beautifully done. This book gave back a voice to the victims of such impressive misfortune and offered some of the integrity lost through the years of the Osage people by onlookers. I was completely captivated by this story and am grateful for the lessons offered throughout

Killers of the Flower Moon. The killings and the abuses of guardianship over the Osage was horrific and I’m so appreciative that this story was re-told.
