The Final Day by William R. Forstchen Book Summary

A major release in the New York Times bestselling One Second After series, set in an alternate America rebuilding after an electromagnetic pulse, this is William R. Forstchen's The Final Day.

Since the detonation of nuclear weapons above the United States more than two years ago, the small town of Black Mountain, North Carolina has suffered famine, civil war, and countless deaths. Now, after defeating a new, tyrannical federal government, John Matherson and his community intend to restore their world to what it was before the EMP apocalypse. For the most part, they are succeeding.

This period of relative stability doesn’t last long. A new, aggressive government announces that it’s taking over and ceding large portions of the country to China and Mexico. The Constitution is no longer in effect, and what’s left of the U.S. Army has been deployed to suppress rebellion in the remaining states. John fears he and his town will be targets.

General Bob Scales, John’s old commanding officer and closest friend from prewar days, is sent to bring John into line. Will John and his people accept the new, autocratic regime? Or will revolution rip the fledgling nation apart at the seams?

Months before publication, William R. Forstchen’s novel One Second After was cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read. This third book in the series immerses readers once more in the story of our nation’s struggle to rebuild itself after an electromagnetic pulse wipes out all electricity and plunges the country into darkness, starvation, and death.

Great read despite snooty critic's review. If you're tired of corrupt government getting even more corrupt... this book provides relief. The Publisher Weekly review pulls the predictable, but typical "right wing bad" review - they can smooch it. Great book.

Decent ending. Although not a great as one second after, the author makes a decent attempt at closing out the series. Looking forward to a new story maybe, ( how China gets kicked out ).

Great book .. From the moment I opened the book, I got stock, I was only able to release its grip from my soul after the last page was read .

An outline if ever there was one…. In the 1980s, I was employed by an aerospace company that won a contract to study the “hardening” of military hardware and facilities against the effects of an electromagnetic pulse weapon. Many of us considered and debated the effects of such a weapon on the infrastructure of the United States, primarily its aging and decrepit electrical power distribution system euphemistically called a “grid.” We set about parametrically estimating the effects on the populace, a single weapon that could reduce our electrical, water, fuel, natural gas distribution and transportation systems to useless rubble with the detonation of a single nuclear weapon. The results? Ninety-four to ninety-nine percent of our population would die due to dehydration, violence, disease, starvation, and hypothermia in the first 12 months. Refining our ground rules and methods of estimation revealed that what the U.S. would almost certainly experience would be much worse than what appears in this series of books, and most of the population would be wiped out in 8 months — less, if the attack was mounted in mid-to-late summer. That such results could be achieved with employment of a single nuclear weapon against this country makes its existence all the more an efficient means of removing this republic literally from the face of the Earth, and guarantees that some small nation or political group would build it. It is a certainty… These studies were sent to our state’s members of Congress with no results. Not achieving even a casual interest, the wide range of studies were sent to almost all members of Congress — with little real results. That such a popular series of books has generated no interest in Congress — and the vague promise by a sitting President that he would authorize a study about defending against such an attack — is both saddening and disappointing. When all is said and done by politicians, everything is said and nothing done. The results of deploying an EMP weapon makes its creation and use a certainty. The results of this attack are far worse than you read in this series of books, and to a greater degree of permanence.

Unsettling, Humbling, Riveting. Truly the most proud series I have ever read. A terrifying semblance of our current state of affairs and the silent threat which could stand to be our future.

A let down. So sad. Was really trying to love this book much like the previous 2 in the series however it just fell completely short. Should have been left with just 2, would have been better than this. Sorry.

The series. This book should be required reading in high school, or college. We just might be able to bring this United States back from the brink once more. Please God just once more.

The Final Day. Wow!!! What can I say? The return of the king! Forstchen returns. Only a few days to go!

Good ending but boring in the middle. I had trouble pushing through this book until the last few hundred pages when things picked back up again.

I Felt Every Word. I’ve never been much of a reader in my entire life. A friend told me about “One Second After”, so I gave it a shot. I read that entire book in about 3 nights after bedtime. Then I bought “One Year After”. The only way I would stop reading was to fall asleep. I finished that one in about a week. Immediately, I bought this book and couldn’t stop reading all three books. I truly felt like I was going through everything that the characters were going through all the way until the end. In my own personal opinion, there will never be a series of books that tops this one.

Great ending!!. ❤❤ highly recommend this series!!

Amazing Series!. Incredible story telling and jaw-droppingly realistic expectations of the potential experience!!

Great finish to the series.. I have loved all the books. I’m so invested in the characters that I feel what they feel. Awesome!

Great. Great ending to a great series

Riveting. I really enjoyed the series. It’s a paradox though. He is an “OK” writer. He is not especially good at turning a phrase and his plot is fairly predictable. But I just couldn’t put it down. It was riveting!!

Final Day. Was glad to see this book was on its way... hard to explain how good I felt One Second and One Year really were. Simple words for these two moving works of art. Final Day for me, took way too long to lift-off and then try to soar with the other two. An ok read and a must if you've enjoyed this story so far.

Brilliant and intriguing. An compelling and completely engaging experience with the characters. I'm hooked!

One year after. Great series. Something everyone should read and give some thought to.

God Bless America. A must read. Never give up! Freedom regardless of sacrifice.

Disappointing - Could Have Been Better. Too many canned speeches between characters and much less exploration of the consequences of the actions of the primary geopolitical players. Seemed like a toss-off from the prior two novels just to wrap it up.

The greatest fiction written. If anyone can read all three of "The Day" books without a box of tissues, knowing that the events written about could actually happen must not have a heart!!!

Great book, great series!. This is one of my favorite series. This is book number three in the series and I highly recommend reading them in order. It is a very good read. I had a hard time putting it down.
